    1. [ARMSTRONG] NYC (&Brooklyn) -Orphanages/ Hospitals/ Institutions/ & Orphan Train
    2. Hi All, I have been trying to help someone locate a family...perhaps just the children in NY City. Because of this I have come across sites and info that some of you might find either helpful or interesting. They were "Institutions" where children were left or went because either parents couldn't afford to care for them or the parents died. Another part of "Immigration" history because of this were - "The Orphan Trains". Here is a brief history....below the article is the site it came from. Plus below that "other" sites in ref to this, and different institutions, hospitals, jails, orphanages etc. Some of these sires have names on them..... A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORPHAN TRAIN MOVEMENT The Orphan Train movement began in 1854 and continued until 1930. During this 75 year time span, somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 orphaned, abandoned, and homeless children were sent "west" from New York on trains to find new families. There were two main organizations that "shipped" children west to new homes. They were: 1) The Children's Aid Society run by Rev. Charles Loring Brace, and 2) The New York Founding Hospital, operated by the Sisters of Charity. It was hoped by these organizations, that by sending these "orphans" out west to find new "families" they would have a better chance of leading a happy and productive life, than if left to fend for themselves on the streets of New York. Both of these charitable organizations are still in operation today. The first Kansas-bound Orphan Train arrived in the state in 1867, and the last Kansas train arrived in 1930 (the same year the Orphan Train movement officirly ceased operations). During that time, it is estimated that between 5,000 and 6,O00 children were placed in Kansas homes. Some of these children were adopted by their new Kansas families, but many were not. The following is the story of two Kansasbound Orphan Train Riders. _Riders on an Orphan Train_ (http://www.kancoll.org/articles/orphans/orphan_t.htm) Sites about Orphan Trains: _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mogrundy/orphans.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mogrundy/orphans.html) (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mogrundy/orphans.html) _http://www.outfitters.com/~melissa/ot/ot.html_ (http://www.outfitters.com/~melissa/ot/ot.html) _Genealogy: Orphan Trains_ (http://www.genealinks.com/orphantrain.htm) _http://www.genealinks.com/orphantrain.htm_ (http://www.genealinks.com/orphantrain.htm) Brooklyn/ NY City -Census/ Hospitals/Institutions/ Orphanages: _http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Census/index.html_ (http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Census/index.html) I thought these sites might help some looking for those they couldn't find, esp young children. I hope they help. Sue in NY **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. (http://home.aol.com/diy/home-improvement-eric-stromer?video=15?ncid=aolhom00030000000001)
