Hi All, In my searches these last few days I've learned about a place...."Hart's Island" (Potter's Field). It is an island off of Manhattan where over the years it has had different uses....a POW camp/prison for Civil War Soldiers, a prison's site, a home for delinquent boys, a home for homeless men, factories, an asylum, even a home and a small community of nice homes, but most of all...now it is used as a graveyard or burial ground. It is where the un claimed from NYC are buried. Whether it was an immigrant who died on ship or even just lived in the city and had no money and/or no one to claim their remains, an infant left who died with no one to claim them, a victim of murder or consequences who was never identified or claimed, or even a person of wealth who no one claimed to bury in a family plot....they are buried here. There are 700,000 graves. Men, women, children, infants. Unforunately these names were kept in the N Y Prison system and hard to obtain. But since March 14 th , 2008 there is a project underway to make a website. Here are some sites in ref to this, and about Hart Island. As searchers we know we come across some very sad stories in ref to the immigrants and people we search for, This may be one of them. I know it broke my heart to see small coffins of infants stacked in rows of four to be buried that way. But I knew that this was important info to pass on.
