Dear Joe and all George MadDonald Fraser was mentioned in the Anchorage Daily News today www.adn.com search on his name. Aside from the great work he did on the "Steel Bonnets", he was also rather famous as the author of the "Flashman" series of historical yarns. "Flashman" published in 1969, introduced an enduring antihero: the roguish Harry Flashman, who fought, drank and womanized his way across the British Empire, Europe and the U.S., playing a role in great historical moments. / Anchorage Daily News thurs Jan 3, 2008 George obviously had an Armstrong in mind when he wrote the Flashman series...!! Really trying to find how to do the research in Ireland at the moment. Trudy Smith Australia
I may be able to offer a little help here, since I grew up in Washington Co and am a descendant of Robert Armstrong. He and his wife, probably Jane McElvaine (not Young), were married in Bedford Co. Virginia (not PA). The error in data happened several years ago when I shared some research done about 1940 by a family friend that had Robert's wife listed as Jane Young but with no verification. The data I shared was cobbled a bit and mistakenly attached to the PA Armstrong's. There is now evidence that this data is incorrect. I have more to share, but since this is probably not your line, you may have no interest. But back to your question. According to Robert's family bible, he had a daughter named Prudence born 7 May, 1803. Since the bible also lists her death in 1825, she could not have married in 1831. Benoni also had a daughter named Prudence born at about the same time. I have run across her several times in my research and seem to remember seeing her marriage to a McCoy listed in the Indiana state marriage records that are available online at the Indiana State Library site. I have also come across Benoni's name several times but have limited information about him. He and his family were prominent residents of Salem, Indiana, Washington Co. during the early and middle 1800s. Hope this helps and let me know if there is more I can do. I have seen two proposed parentages for Prudence on various websites. One hypothesis is that she was the daughter of Robert Armstrong and Jane Young, who were married in Cumberland Co. PA in 1786. The other (more common but less plausible?) claim is that she is the daughter of Benoni Armstrong and Elizabeth McCaskey. I would greatly welcome any evidence anyone could provide regarding the correct parentage of the Prudence Armstrong who married Alexander McCoy in Indiana in 1831. "I wonder if you do a "Roll Call"" It's been done before Nan, but not for some time I believe. A good start to the year, thanks for the suggestion!! :D My adopted Dad, Norman Bynon, was my link to the Armstrong name. His gGrandmother, Elizabeth ARMSTRONG, migrated to Victoria, Australia back in the 1850's, no doubt for the goldrush since her father was a miner. Elizabeth was born in Benfieldside, Durham Northern, on May 14, 1848 and was actually one of twins. Her father, John ARMSTRONG, is my biggest mystery. He was born about 1822 in Hexhamshire, Northumberland and he married Dorathy WAUGH, born about 1822 as well, in Northumberland. I've been unable to find their wedding which apparently happened at Gretna Green, but the registration is eluding me, sigh! :( I'm also having trouble finding his immigration records. John's parents were Thomas ARMSTRONG and Esthern STOBART. Thomas's parents were John ARMSTRONG and Elizabeth ARMSTRONG, who were married November 14, 1780 in Whitley by Hexham, Northumberland. I'm not sure if Elizabeth was born an Armstrong or whether she married another Armstrong before she married John. If anyone can make a connection to my Armstrongs, I'd LOVE to hear about it! :D Take care, Robyn. IBSSG Stockbridge, Georgia, USA Honey's Home of Genealogy www.robsfamily.com

"I wonder if Edie and Rob remember where they found the original list." Hi Nan :) That's a jolly good question!! I honestly couldn't tell you which list I provided, but I do have a lot of Australian CDs, so I can do a lookup for you anytime you need one! :D If you go to my homepage ... www.robsfamily.com ... and scroll down, you'll see a list of the CDs I own. As far as convicts are concerned, I have the Tasmanian Index of Convicts 1804-1893, NSW Convicts 1788-1842 and I have the Convictions CD, which is shipping. I can't remember if that lists convicts or not, but I understand that's now searchable online too, or at least an updated version of the CD I have is from a link within the CD. There's also a list of Australian sites on my website ... http://www.robsfamily.com/links/linksaus.php ... which is by no means complete, and it's sorely in need of an overhaul and some additions, but you may find something there of use too. Let me know if you want me to search any of my CDs and I'll see what I can find for you! :D Take care, Robyn. IBSSG Stockbridge, Georgia, USA Honey's Home of Genealogy www.robsfamily.com
Good Evening All. When I was on the list before a friend from Tasmania, Edie, and Rob, had a list of Convicts from Australia. I am actually looking for a list for a friend, and I wonder if Edie and Rob remember where they found the original list. I am an Armstrong in that my GG-Grandparents are Wallace W. Armstrong, and Julia Lobdell. I had allot of friends on this list before, but it has been a while.
