Dear M&M and other Listers, Comments about my short replies with forty other previous emails attached are quite right and I plead guilty. I have switched to gmail and I do not notice all those trailing emails. If some kind soul on the List who uses gmail can tell me how to notice them and snip them off, I would gladly do it. All I can say is that the trailers are not visible. People on other lists must be as aggravated. I am going to take the test for a general class Radio Ham soon and I bet that will be one of the 435 questions. My last Ham license expired in 1955, so it has been a while and I want to be ready. John, John, John, You know I would never break the rules of no politics, sex or religion on the list. There was no politics in that discussion...merely a few facts in government or civics. I was very careful not to inject my own opinions about any candidates, just thought it might be interesting for those not familiar with what the primary election and voting process is like in this unique state. Dear MO the delightful, I know there is a difference in the way you two spell your names, but by using two Ns, I could be sure of covering each of you. Sarah Armstrong Jan 10, 1961 - Dec 24, 2007 Sara Armstrong, Clam Gulch (Alaska) resident died in a car accident on the Sterling Highway on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 2007 she was 46. (A.C.) Armstrong. He is my paternal grandmother's paternal grandfather. I know that he served with the Arkansas 9th Infantry during the Civil War. The Arkansas 9th was organized in Pine Bluff, in the southeast part of the state. He moved to McNairy County, TN, after the death of his first wife (I don't know the year). There he married my great-great-grandmother, Melinda Mitchell, on December 29, 1886. He submitted Civil War Pension Application #S3282 in McNairy County. He died in 1902. Patterson Jim and Sarah's son Asa Culbert married Mary Belle Grammer. Acie and Belle's son Andrew Jackson Culbert married Barbara Pauline Rogers. Jack and Pauline's daughter Joyce Ann Culbert was my mother. ALSO: Stephen and his SECOND wife, Catherine Howell had a daughter Martha Ann Armstrong. Martha Ann Armstrong married Newell C. Grammer. They adopted a child - Mary Belle (family lore has her original last name as being Clinton). Mary Belle Grammer married Asa Culbert, mentioned above.

I have traced my Australian ARMSTRONGs back to my gGrandfather, John Patrick Armstrong, born calc. 1855 somewhere in Ireland. Since I do not know where he was born in Ireland, I am unable to search records for him at the moment and hence have hit a wall there. John Patrick ARMSTRONG was born calc. 1855 in Ireland, (place unknown). Parents are not known. He died in Australia but death date and place are unknown. John was married on 21 June 1888 (Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia) to Mary DILLON, daughter of John Dillon and Ann McNamara. Mary was born on 2 Dec 1859 in Bombentlo, Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia. They had three children Julia P., Michael Laurence Dillon (my grandfather), and John Patrick "Paddy". Noted events in his life were: • John was listed as a Publican on the birth certificate of his son Michael (28 Jan 1890).1 • In 1890, he resided in the Derbyshire Arms Hotel, 372 Sussex St. Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.3 John married Mary Dillon, daughter of John Dillon and Ann McNamara. Dear All, Today, January 3rd at mid day was news of the death of George MacDonald Fraser. Surely all Armstrongs know of his definitive work, "The Steel Bonnets" the tale of the Reivers of the Anglo-Scots Borderland. George was 82 years old, a passionate opponent of the metric system which was imposed upon us by Eurocrats. My other favourite is one of the last things he wrote, his own biography. George served through the infamous Burma campaign fighting them in the jungle. He ended his autobiography at the moment when he left his mates as they drove the Japanese army out of Burma. That was to go to an officer training course. What a man! Joe Armstrong.

Joe, thanks for telling us about George Fraser's book. I thought that was a wonderful book and loved all the references to the Armstrongs. I didn't realize he'd written anything autobiographical...I will look for that. It's nice to see you on the list again...we miss you and all of your great stories.
