Author: finleyc Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.armstrong/2666.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Lew, I have an Armstrong family in Stark County as early as 1812. This is from their family Bible: "Robert Armstrong and Isabella Johnston (his wife) came to America about the year 1812 from County Antrim, Ireland. George Armstrong, John Armstrong, William Armstrong and James Armstrong their sons were boys upon their arrival. Their were daughters Eliza, & Ann & Isabella." I know your Armstrong does not fit into family of Robert's sons George and James who were both Methodist itinerant ministers. There was also a son, Robert. I have no information on sons Robert, John, and William; they were all born in Ireland, before coming to America in 1812. Could any of them be part of your family? We walked two block to sit atop a mountain of dirt on the site of a new church abuilding. Overlooking the road, we waited until sundown. When no cars were coming we spread a liberal line of glue across the road and waited for a victim. When the next car was a half block away, I lit it. 3. Hi, My ancestor Thomas Armstrong was born about 1794 in North Carolina. He married Elisabeth Jones in 1812 NC. He was a preacher. I know that they were in McMinn County in 1819 because this is when their oldest son William Burage was born. They already had 2 daughters when they came to TN. They were in Missouri by 1821 or so. Does this sound familiar to anyone.Catherine _________________________________________________________________ Helping your favorite cause is as easy as instant messaging. You IM, we give. http://im.live.com/Messenger/IM/Home/?source=text_hotmail_join

My uncle John, your Grandad, is still in touch with me and my Mum, occasionally. I'm still in touch with my cousin in Longridge, and she passes on info to me. According to Uncle Louis, he thinks your great grandad, my grandad, was born in Ireland, but no-one knows for sure. His story is that Grandad was born in Ireland, came to the UK with a mate, lied about his age to join the Army, and eventually met Esther, married, had John, and the rest you know. So we may have to start looking in Irish records. Uncle Louis also said that Grandad burnt all his papers when he came back from the Army. Anyway, that's about all I can tell you for now. Hope it helps. Cheers, Collette Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Is this the Jane I've been playing phone tag with? Ross is the long lost uncle I've been looking for. His younger brother William Mynatt Bowling is my great grandfather. I have death certificates for most of the bowlings in that generation including, the father Stephen was apparently 103 when he died. I also have several obituaries and marriage records. Do you have anything on the Milligan side? I'm trying to figure out when Ross and William's mother Martha died. I have her on the 1880 census and I have stephens marriage to Mary Black as 1892. She apparently doesn't have a headstone in Knox County. Neither does Stephen who is buried in New Gray according to his obituary. I have Stephen's parents listed as John Bowling and Edith Milligan and Martha's listed as Julius and Malinda Scarboro. Is that correct according to your records? Do you have any generations beyond that? I also have quite a bit of information on Stephen's sister Celia including her dea! th certificate and her son Mynatt Milligan's Death certificate. I am Curious about the name Mynatt, because it is my G Grandfather's middle name also. Stephen and Celia both married milligans whose relationship if any I haven't determined. Do you have that info? 3. Dear Roberta, Unfortunately, I have no information for you; however, I would be interested if you discover anything about this Armstrong family. My family has been traced back to a Stephen Asa Armstrong who was born around 1801 somewhere in Georgia. He settled in northeast Alabama (Jackson/Marshall/Dekalb counties) around 1830. According to family legend, he and his extended family went from Georgia to Tennessee before he split off from them and went to Alabama, and apparently he may have married his first wife, possibly named Rachel Williams, around 1822 in central Tennessee. This would probably be around the same area that you are speaking about Davidson county, or possibly Williamson, Rutherford, Maury or Bedford. For obvious reasons we are making our search broad, but from I can discern about the Tennessee Armstrongs of that time period, there were two main groups: The first in northeastern Tennessee around Knox County, and the second in central Tennessee - these two groups seem to be unconnected, however within each group every seems to be related in some manner. If James and Elizabeth Hodge Armstrong truly were from Davidson County, Tennessee then you are most fortunate, because most of the records for that county are intact. Marriages and divorces begin in 1789 and Land, Probate, Tax and Military records from 1783. They also have a few newspapers beginning in 1808. Good luck! And please let me know how it goes.
