They are documented in the application for Ruth Hallock Armstrong No. 113603. 2. Doreen Baxter
    3. My g-grandmother was Jane ARMSTRONG born in Edinburgh in 1827, (3rd. child in the family - the others were David 1822/3; Susan 1825; James and Elizabeth 1831; William 1833; Alexander Knox 1835; Katherine abt. 1840) who became a school teacher. Her parents were William ARMSTRONG and Jane Brown. William was a cabinet maker in Edinburgh, and as far as I can tell, he was born in Chirnside, Berwickshire on 6 July 1793, but so far, I have not definite proof. If this is the correct William, his parents were George ARMSTRONG and Elizabeth Knox, and the previous generation was Alexander ARMSTRONG and Jean Darling. Is there anyone on the list descended from this family? Doreen.

    1. [ARMSTRONG] Immigrants that died on ships..
    2. Hi All, In my searches these last few days I've learned about a place...."Hart's Island" (Potter's Field). It is an island off of Manhattan where over the years it has had different uses....a POW camp/prison for Civil War Soldiers, a prison's site, a home for delinquent boys, a home for homeless men, factories, an asylum, even a home and a small community of nice homes, but most of all...now it is used as a graveyard or burial ground. It is where the un claimed from NYC are buried. Whether it was an immigrant who died on ship or even just lived in the city and had no money and/or no one to claim their remains, an infant left who died with no one to claim them, a victim of murder or consequences who was never identified or claimed, or even a person of wealth who no one claimed to bury in a family plot....they are buried here. There are 700,000 graves. Men, women, children, infants. Unforunately these names were kept in the N Y Prison system and hard to obtain. But since March 14 th , 2008 there is a project underway to make a website. Here are some sites in ref to this, and about Hart Island. As searchers we know we come across some very sad stories in ref to the immigrants and people we search for, This may be one of them. I know it broke my heart to see small coffins of infants stacked in rows of four to be buried that way. But I knew that this was important info to pass on. 1. [ARMSTRONG] NYC (&Brooklyn) -Orphanages/ Hospitals/ Institutions/ & Orphan Train
    2. Hi All, I have been trying to help someone locate a family...perhaps just the children in NY City. Because of this I have come across sites and info that some of you might find either helpful or interesting. They were "Institutions" where children were left or went because either parents couldn't afford to care for them or the parents died. Another part of "Immigration" history because of this were - "The Orphan Trains". Here is a brief history....below the article is the site it came from. Plus below that "other" sites in ref to this, and different institutions, hospitals, jails, orphanages etc. Some of these sires have names on them..... A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORPHAN TRAIN MOVEMENT The Orphan Train movement began in 1854 and continued until 1930. During this 75 year time span, somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 orphaned, abandoned, and homeless children were sent "west" from New York on trains to find new families. There were two main organizations that "shipped" children west to new homes. They were: 1) The Children's Aid Society run by Rev. Charles Loring Brace, and 2) The New York Founding Hospital, operated by the Sisters of Charity. It was hoped by these organizations, that by sending these "orphans" out west to find new "families" they would have a better chance of leading a happy and productive life, than if left to fend for themselves on the streets of New York. Both of these charitable organizations are still in operation today. The first Kansas-bound Orphan Train arrived in the state in 1867, and the last Kansas train arrived in 1930 (the same year the Orphan Train movement officirly ceased operations). During that time, it is estimated that between 5,000 and 6,O00 children were placed in Kansas homes. Some of these children were adopted by their new Kansas families, but many were not. The following is the story of two Kansasbound Orphan Train Riders. _Riders on an Orphan Train_ (http://www.kancoll.org/articles/orphans/orphan_t.htm) Sites about Orphan Trains: _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mogrundy/orphans.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mogrundy/orphans.html) (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mogrundy/orphans.html) _http://www.outfitters.com/~melissa/ot/ot.html_ (http://www.outfitters.com/~melissa/ot/ot.html) _Genealogy: Orphan Trains_ (http://www.genealinks.com/orphantrain.htm) _http://www.genealinks.com/orphantrain.htm_ (http://www.genealinks.com/orphantrain.htm) Brooklyn/ NY City -Census/ Hospitals/Institutions/ Orphanages: _http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Census/index.html_ (http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Census/index.html) I thought these sites might help some looking for those they couldn't find, esp young children. 2. Ok...one more lol During the time many of us are looking for our ancestors in Ireland new ideas were coming to light. One of those was the Methodist religion. 1. [ARMSTRONG] Connecticut Sites
    2. Here are some Connecticut sites I posted to someone on another "list" for any of you interested in Connecticut. I am not as familiar with searching Connecticut BUT since it borders upstate NY to the east and sits across the Long Island Sound from Long Island....many immigrants did settle there. I looked to see if there were any interesting sites....here are some that might help. I think you may need to register at some and/or even may have to subscribe. The "Godfrey Memorial Library" I have been told is a great and extensive site. I intended to subscribe but never got to it lol. It is not expensive in comparison to other sites and I hear they have records dating very far back. For 1 year it costs $35.00 (US). _http://www.godfrey.org/_ (http://www.godfrey.org/) These sites may be helpful...if not for searching then at least for being able perhaps to give you the info on where to look.
