This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Armstrong Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/kQB.2ACIB/2486 Message Board Post: I am looking for children or siblings on Maurice Armstrong. His father was Joseph Alvin Armstrong (my great uncle) Maurice was born Feb. 5, 1969. His mother's name was Ida Mae.
For approximately three weeks in May and June John Giacoletti and I made a research trip to Northern Ireland to gather information on some of the Defenders of Derry. I said I would post our findings to the various lists that had been contacted prior to our departure. To view all of our posts please go to the rootsweb.com main page and find the link to "threaded archives" Type in COWAN and search June and July 2002 and you will find some really interesting posts describing our research adventures. If you have any comments or questions please feel free to contact me at cscunc@aol.com. Prior to the trip I offered four obscure, out-of-print publications that should be included in every Ulster Presbyterian's genealogical library. They all have either expired copyright provisions or, in the case of the Hagy thesis, I have the author's permission to reproduce the document. The publications are: "The Laggan and its Presbyterianism" and "In the Days of the Laggan Presbytery," 1905,1908, by the Rev. Alexander Lecky, B.A. member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Belfast 211 pages We met JB Shannon, age 90, who assisted in the 1975 reprint and he said these books are still the BEST source for Ulster Presbyterian research. Books contain lists of former generations of Lagganeers, and their places of abode, which have never before appeared in print. "Fighters of Derry, Their Deeds and Descendants, being a Chronicle of Events in Ireland during the Revolutionary period 1688-1691," by William R. Young, 1932, Eyre and Spottiswoode, London, 350 pages. One of the most difficult sources to locate, in fact almost impossible. Contains biographical sketches (1200+) of the Defenders of Derry "A History of the Siege of Londonderry and Defence of Enniskillen in 1688 and 1689, with Historical Poetry and Biographical Notes," by the Rev. John Graham, M.A. Rector of Magilligan in the Diocese of Derry. Includes the Battles of the Boyne, Athlone, and Aughrim and the siege and capitulation of Limmerick by Lord Macaulay, Toronto, 1869 311 pages. Full of genealogical information about the families who were at Derry. "Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799, a thesis presented to the Faculty of the Department of History, East Tennessee State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts, by James Hagy, 1966, 150 pages. The most popular of the documents offered, this covers the families who settled in Russell county, Virginia when it was considered the frontier. And a new addition: "The Tinkling Spring, Headwater of Freedom" A Study of the Church and Her People, Howard McKnight Wilson, Fisherville, 1954 This book contains more genealogy of the early settlers of Augusta/Rockbridge Counties Virginia than any other. Baptismal records of the Rev. Craig and detailed analysis of many of the early families from the 1740's on. Please contact me privately at cscunc@aol.com for details on how to acquire these materials. It is very slow and cumbersome to contact each list individually so in the future I will be putting these and other items I deem valuable on abebooks.com Once again, I will be happy to answer any questions that have to do with the migration of Scots-Irish people from Ulster to Pa, Virginia and Tennessee. But remember, I probably don't know who your mamma is, I had a hard enough time figuring out who mine was. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105

Harvey was born Jan 1, 1865 in MountAyr, Iowa. I believe the others may be brothers. They worked for the Railroad, and were boarders at my husband's aunts home in Muncie, Indiana in the late 1800's and early 1900's. I have several family pictures of them and others. Would love to give them to their family.

Debbie, I'm very impressed! I've been searching for the parents of my gg grandfather for 20 years now, and although I know where and when he was born, died, his wife, his children...I still can't get him back across the Big Pond. HIs name is Henry ARMSTRONG, his wife was Elizabeth CADY; I have his kids, his g'children, and have a hunch that his father was a Benjamin A*. I have another gg grandfather, James WRAY, who was born in Co. Donegal, but I'm almost sure that his family was originally Scottish. I know darn near all there is to know about him once he came to America, but NOTHING, NADA about him before that. I want to know about his parents, his siblings, when they left Scotland to go to Ireland (if that's what they did). Oh well... I'm tickled to death for you. I know it's a great feeling when you FINALLY find someone you've been looking for forever! Congratulations, and maybe some of your luck/good fortune will rub off on me!!! This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: ARMSTRONG, VOLK Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kQB.2ACIB/2483 Message Board Post: "Mac ARMSTRONG. No person of whom mention is made in this work is more deserving of notice than our subject. Though young he has had much experience, and has worked his way unaided, until now he ranks one of the foremost among our business men. Mr. ARMSTRONG is a son of Silas and Zelinda, the former chief of the Wyandott nation in England, and who came with them to this place in 1844. He necessarily was well acquainted with other tribes and prominently known in Washington, his name often being mentioned there. Mac, the third in a family of five children, was born in Wyandott. When eleven years old his father died, and at this early age he was thrown upon his own resources. His education was obtained entirely by self application, his only schooling being received in the little brick school-house, now in this city, and that only during the winter, while he worked summers. At the age of sixteen he went to Colorado and was employed in the largest wholesale and retail dry goods house in Denver, and probably in the State. After remaining there for eight years, part of the time being engaged as traveling salesman, he returned to Wyandott and engaged in the drug business, January 1st, 1877. Has since followed this although extensively engaged in the real estate business. He is the owner of several houses in Kansas City, Kansas, and in this place, and derives his principal income from these. Mr. ARMSTRONG is a self-made man; commencing life without means, through his own efforts, unaided by friends or fortune, he has paved his own pathway to success and is a worthy example for the young men of the county. Let them study it! His marriage was in October, 1880, to Miss Helen, daughter of Mr. VOLK, the superintendent of the motive power at the Union Pacific shops. He formerly held that position in Hannibal." Hey Armstrongs! I found my Armstrongs!! Yippee Yahoooooooooo..... While I have only four generations, back to my ggg-grandfather, at least I now have stuff to work with. Thanks to someone who has no connection to any Armstrong (go figure), I know where to find them. And I know where they're buried. And I know when they were born/died. And I know who they were married to. You guys who have so much more information on your own Armstrongs may not be impressed but, for me, this is better than winning the lottery!!! Well, almost... I found this Armstrong in the 1930 census: 1930 MI, Kent Co., Grand Rapids, 221 Travis St., ED 32 sheet 9b: Armstrong, William A., owns home $7500 value, age 33, age 18 at 1st mar., b. MI, parent b. MI, real estate broker , Flora M., 34, age 20 at 1st mar., MI/MI/MI , Lula M., 13, MI , Arnold B., 8?, MI , Charles J., 2 3/12, MI So looks like these 2 were marr. abt. 1915-16, and should also be found on the 1920 census as a family, and as children on the 1900 and 1910 censuses. Hope this helps someone! Rhonda A. Bell ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less!
