Both are buried in the West Side Cemetery in Fredericksburg, Ohio, along with 4 generations of my relatives. Nancy's parents are Robert Cunningham and Mary Catherine Ream. Nancy's sister Mary Eliza Cunningham married John D. Armstrong, who is William Searight Armstrong's cousin. I am searching for anyone who knows any of these Armstrongs and Cunninghams or anyone else with relatives in either the West or East Side Cemeteries in Fredericksburg, Ohio.

    1. [ARMSTRONG-L] Re: GREGORYs
    2. Jane, I don't think I'll be able to help you with how your g' grandfather got his "Gregory" middle name. All of my Gregorys have been in NY state (to the best of my knowledge, at least). (Exc. James Gregory, Sr., was b 6 Nov 1827, in CT. He died in NYC in 1912.) I think his father's name was Benjamin and, according to James' death certificate, Benj. was born in Ireland (no idea where), and so was his unknown (to me!) wife. I have no idea what Benj. did for a living, but James was a lawyer and apparently a very good one. I also have an Elizabeth GREGORY, b1603 @ Great Bentley, Essex, England. She marr Richard WEBB, Sr., and she d in 1680 (pod unknown). I nearly forgot: Benjamin and his Unkn. wife also had a dau names Elizabeth. Their other children were James*, Sarah, Benjamin, Caroline, and William. No info on any of them, unfortunately. Sorry not to be more helpful to you! If you run across any NY Gregorys, please let me know...maybe we could find a connection. Happy Hunting! Barbara

    1. [ARMSTRONG-L] ARMSTRONG of Dumfries, Scotland
    2. We have an Agnes ARMSTRONG who was born 1820/21 in Torthorwald, Dumfries (according to the 1881 census) or Kirkcudbrightshire (according to the 1891 census). She married James MURRAY of Moffat, a shoemaker, on 29 Nov 1839 and had children Janet, Thomas and Charles Hope Johnston. We have no other information about Agnes and I have not yet managed to go to the area to do local investigations. Does anyone recognise this ARMSTRONG as part of their family tree? Regards, Margaret, Aberdeen

    3. Those names and dates are identical, but the places are definitely not! I have no proof, and no documentation, other than a family "pedigree" composed by one of their descendants many years ago (and given me by a newly discovered cousin).. The story in the "pedigree" rings true in that, as far as it goes, it meshes with the information that my immediate family has had handed down to them. You can check my GEDCOM on Rootsweb under Armstrong-Robertson. My user name is jarcjac.

    2. Dear Barbara, You're right, it's got to be in England, (none in Scotland) and of course it's 'Bark'-shire as pronounced. (#}:0)) BTW, recently when I was about to start writing mine up a sudden take-off occurred. Would you believe, my maternal line by a lucky fluke has been checked back to- wait for it, 1581. Noo think aboot that! It was the shock of finding a southerner in my pedigree. that brought it on. I found my maternal granny and her siblings and parents in 1881. Her Dad came from Sussex. A cousin took this info and contacted a person down there and we got a ready researched line. It happens, it really does. We are on a countdown now to return to England. We were over for the Riding at Langholm and the Gather. Came over to Belgium in September and are about to go back. I have a magazine to get out. Rita and I had a lovely holiday a while back and we've been doing the rounds of the family and friends over here. By next Thursday we'll be to our other 'home' and it will be much cooler than here. We are having a lovely late summer here, it was 20 degrees C today, about 70F. On October 4th! Hope you are well, seems like years since you were last in Scotland. Maybe it was, <Grin>. BTW, County boundaries have changed over the centuries, Wantage is now In Oxfordshire according to my road atlas. It's about 20 miles soutj and slightly west of Oxford City. Good luck. Rita and Joe in Belgium.

    2. Dear Armstrong Cousins, I've just run across yet another Armstrong branch which may be in my family. (I already have at least three others, one being my maternal grandparents, James (Jr.) & Allie (Armstrong) Gregory, and another (but same line of Gregorys, at least)are James (Sr.) & Mary (Armstrong) Gregory. (This couple are the parents of my maternal g'parents (above). The new ones I've run across are John GREGORY, b 20 Aug 1620, Wantage, Berkshire, bpt 20 August 1620 @ Wantage Parish Church, Berkshire; d bef 1670, bur. bef 1670. Marr., on 27 Aug 1646, @ Wantage Parish Church, Berkshire, to Elizabeth ARMSTRONG, bpt. 20 Aug 1631 @ Wantage Parish Church, Berkshire; d 10 July 1672, Wantage, Berkshire, bur July 1672, Wantage Parish Church, Berkshire. Before someone yells "what Berkshire", let me tell you: in my world atlas, I find the following Berkshires: MA, NY, VT, Berkshire Co., MA, and the Berkshire Hills in MA. But, given the birth dates of this couple, I think this particular Berkshire must be in England or Scotland. (I don't think there were any Armstrongs or Gregorys on the Mayflower!) Anyone have any ideas about how I can go about finding more about this couple???! Thanks for any hints, clues, what-have-you! Barbara in MO (but originally from NYC)

    3. As John D says this is a very clever little fellow!! I updated my Virus checker on Sunday (as I usually do on a weekly basis) but the cure for this one wasn't loaded until Monday. Don't think you are safe from this one even if you don't open the attachment...you are not!! If you run Outlook Express with the preview pane open i.e. the message appearing under the email at download you will not stop it! Your first priority is to reset your layout through View/Layout/Preview pane. See the box is unchecked. This way when your emails come in they will not be opened until you physically open them. If you do double click on the title it will immediately run the virus! My wife got caught out last night as the sender and the email title was familiar and they usually send an attachment. Fortunately she was off line when she opened it. It was noticed by a sudden flash across the screen which said "Downloading". She realised the problem and called me. I indicated no problem...use the virus scanner and cleaner.....Now here's where it is really clever....your virus scanner appears to be running but it isn't. It will scan approx 15 files and then disappear from the t! ask bar!! If you don't know if you've got it or not, try running your scan and clean!!. It will also affect all other networked computers. Fortunately the problem was restricted to my computer. I was able to up load the latest patch from a third party machine and load it from CD, there was no problem with that. You will then have to find the method of running the virus scanner from DOS by looking at your supplier's website. The actual method is quite simple. It will find and delete both the bugbear virus and the trojan PWS-Hooker which it also downloads. When you have got rid of them be sure you re boot your machine before going on line again as the virus checker will otherwise remain in active. Here's a tip.... If you want to see what's in an email in Outlook without opening it, highlight the title, right click on it, select Properties then details tab followed by message source in the bottom rh corner of the window. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!! Nick Armstrong

    3. Dear List The following was received from Rootsweb.. please read and heed.! Sincerely, John D 1. News and Notes: ------------------ 1a. Be Careful Out There. The Bugbear is no teddy bear. It is an e-mail worm containing backdoor components that can allow an infected system to be remotely compromised; it also includes the ability to kill antivirus and firewall software, leaving infected systems wide open to further attacks and lulling you into a false sense of security thinking your system is virus-free. Genealogists have much more interesting things to do than deal with an Internet worm with a Trojan horse, but such is life online. Bugbear, which hit Great Britain and Australia users first on Monday, September 30, according to news reports, is also known as Tanatos. It arrives via e-mail with no distinct characteristics except that the attached file is always 50,688 bytes long. The subject line and text are stolen from existing e-mail it finds on an infected machine. Many RootsWeb users are expressing concerns about this latest varmint because unless you pay extra-careful attention you might think an e-mail with the attached Bugbear worm is coming from a trusted genealogy friend, family member, or from your favorite Mailing List. RootsWeb's Mailing Lists do not allow any attachments, but that doesn't mean you won't receive something that will fool you into thinking the message is from a RootsWeb Mailing List. This is one clever worm. There are confirmed reports of Bugbear even forging some prepends commonly used on many of our Mailing Lists. If you receive e-mail with an attachment that appears to be from say [SURNAME-L] and you are not subscribed to that Mailing List, that is a good indication that it is a message with the Bugbear worm attached. Even if you are subscribed to a certain list and there is an attachment, do not open it. Many of us are still fighting off the Klez worm, which steals and forges our e-mail addresses and subject lines, and now along comes Bugbear and the Opaserv worms. The latter is a network worm that was discovered September 30 also. Are you at risk? You certainly are if you are a Windows user, and especially if you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or 5.5 browsers and have not applied the patch found in MS01-020. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-020.asp?frame=true

    3. Hi Fred, You shouldn't have too much trouble finding relatives in Western Australia as your Armstrongs were some of the first to arrive in the new colony & Adam brought with him several sons to help establish the name here. If you have a look at the Perth DPS-Chat site I am sure you may find more information on your family & you can join the list from this site. It is a rootsweb based list, very helpful & busy with lots of knowledge of our early pioneers. While looking at the site try clicking of 'Books' & do a search for the name, I had a quick look & think you will find some mention of your family in some of the books that are part of the book indexing project. http://www.perthdps.com/ You could also put a notice in our local newspaper the "West Australian" in the 'Can you Help' section looking for descendants of your Armstrong family: Can You Help?, published on Mondays, is a free service compiled by Jenny Kohlen for people seeking information about their families and local history or other items of interest. Reunions - other than veterans - are published on Saturdays on the Information pages. Full name and mailing address (for publication) must accompany every request, as well as telephone number and e-mail address. Send your requests to: Can You Help? "The West Australian," GPO Box N1027, Perth 6843. Fax (08) 9482 3830. Phone (08) 9482 3382 (Mon-Fri). mailto:westinfo@wanews.com.au You can also search our Metropolitan Cemetery site for graves of family members. http://www.mcb.wa.gov.au/Search/default.htm Click on search, type in the surname Armstrong & check what comes up. If you see a family member & click on their name you will get information on the burial plot etc. If you are successful you should be able to get a member of DPS-Chat to do a lookup of the grave for inscription when next someone visits the cemetery. I usually post a message to the list when I am going & then do lookups for anyone & photograph headstones for those too far away to visit. I have the Western Australian BDM's (1841-1905)on CD if you need any lookups. Best wishes, Sharon Sharon McBride Perth, Western Australia mailto:mcbride@iinet.net.au Research Interests http://members.iinet.net.au/~mcbride/
