Excerpt from another list: William of Orange was asked by the Scots and Scots- Irish for his support. According to their petition they were truly concerned for their lives. He did not come over on his own looking to beat up on James II, although he probably didn't have to be asked twice. The plight of the Scots in Ireland: By 1490 Scots had gained political control of Antrim in Ireland - if I recall correctly an Irish MacDonnell married a Scottish lass and her family eventually ended up with the reigns of power in Antrim. Northern Ireland in the 1500's was a sparsely settled part of the island. I believe that the Plantation settlements started somewhere back in the mid-1500's with Queen Elizabeth of England being the spark behind that move. She was quite upset by the somewhat legitimate Scottish presence in Antrim. She meant to dislodge them and eventually take over all of Ireland. One way was to give large Irish plantations to English nobles. Hopefully they would introduce modern agricultural methods, become indispensable, and take over everything. Financially it was a bust. James I in the early1600's continued with a program to stop the Scots from settling in Northern Ireland. He is said to have remarked that they might be harder to dislodge than the native Irish (in his opinion, and he was Scottish born). He encouraged English settlers. Again they didn't fare too well. Then he turned around and exiled Scottish Protestants from the Borders because he felt that they might not support his crown because of religious differences. As it happened they were among his most loyal supporters up until then. He just didn't realize it. He rounded up literally 10's of thousands of Maxwells, Armstrongs, Johnstones, Nixons, Grahams, Carrutherses, Irvings, Elliots, Scotts, and other Border clansmen as part of his Borders pacification plan and exiled them to Northern Ireland. Still more fled to Northern Ireland to escape his "justice". So we now have a situation where there are 3 distinct populations in Northern Ireland. The English wanted the land but not the Irish. The Irish wanted their own land back but not with the English. They were not overly fond of the Scots and would have liked to have seen them gone, but there was greater toleration of them as most of them were on the "outs" with the English too, plus many of the Scots from the highlands were descendents of Irish from Northern Ireland and Roman Catholic, so they were kind of like cousins. The Border Scots were looked upon with some understanding as the Irish knew that many of them were forced to come over. That didn't mean that they loved them though. Meanwhile the Scots were just trying to survive, having been caught between the English and the Irish. After one or more generations many Scots-Irish simply moved on to North America because the "friction" was just too much for them to accept. Their relatives who stayed behind then became concerned for their rights when the troubles started and the Irish Republic was set up. They became even more concerned when the IRA escalated the troubles and the English (British by now) made some waves about pulling out and leaving them to the mercy of the Irish Republic. Can you imagine how they must have felt at that point? Small wonder that they started fighting even harder to maintain what religious freedom that they had. It's truly a complicated quagmire.

Hi Cousins: I have run into something that surprised me: Go to Ancestry.Com, and Check 1920 Census for Wallace W. Armstrong. Los Angeles, CA A Wallace W. Armstrong, turns up on the 1920 Census. Living in Los Angeles Twp., Los Angeles City, CA. Doesn't that sound funny. Anyway, it says as followes: Wallace W. Armstrong Aged: 88 ( 1832 ) Born: Canada Speaks: English Race: White He is Head of Household. M/Statis: Widowed Living with: Harry W. Armstrong Nephew to Wallace Aged: 68 Born: Canada Speaks: English Race: White M/Statis: Married Mary Armstrong Neice-in-law Aged: 62 Born: Pennsylvania Speaks: Race: White M/Statis: Married Now all: 88/y makes Wallace W. Armstrong born about 1832 which is too old for ours... Most of us have 1843, yes, born in Canada, so he would be aged 77/y in 1920. My question is where did we all get the death date for him if none of us have a grave site for him. We have had wome wonderful checkers out there, and none could find his grave. Not in WA, or MN. If he is ours, he is still alive in the 1920 Census on Manhattan Place, we all have a death date of 1904, making him near 61 when he passed. WHERE? Los Angeles, CA. This area would put him near his sons Erbin, and Arthur Armstrong. This is a P.S. to my letter of last night, about my Godmother, Charlotte Armstrong. After having sent the letter, I was going through some things, and I realized that I'd said that she was related through my Paternal side, not my maternal one. Just recently, I saw a letter with the subject of Marshall Armstrong. I didn't read it then, as it was very late at night, even for me (something like 4 or 4:30 AM), and now I can't find it. If anyone out there has both Marshalls and Armstrongs in their lines, I'd sure love to hear from you!! Barb in MO
Hi, Armstrong Cousins, I just realized last night that I have yet another Armstrong that I've never asked about. Although I already have what I think are three different A* lines, i think this one is probably the same line as my maternal grandmother. She was Charlotte Armstrong, and although she was one of my Godmothers, I have no idea how she was connected to the family. I think she was related to my grandmother, Allie Armstrong Gregory, who was b 1866 in Davenport, Iowa (although her parents were from New York State, and the family returned to NYC about 1873.) She (my g'mother, had an older sister who died in about her twenties, and a younger brother who died at the age of eighteen (and of course, never married). I only remember "Aunt Charlotte" from when I was a pretty little, so I guess she must have died about then. I don't remember there being any talk about it, though. I'm almost positive that she had never married. She could have been a cousin of my grandmother's, as her grandfather had eight children, and numerous grandchildren. But...none were named Charlotte, unless there were some grandchildren of her grandfather's that I'm unaware of. I do know she must have been a very upstanding and moral lady, or my parents wouldn't have chosen her as a Godmother for me. One of my few memories of her is of a nice, rather plain, "sensible" woman who, to me (at age 6 or so), seemed "old", maybe in her forties. (My outlook, by the way, on who is "old" and who's "young had changed drastically since I was 6 years old!) If any of you out there have a stray "Cousin" Charlotte floating about, in or about New York City, please let me know, OK? Why I never asked about her while there was someone to ask, I'll never know. I don't believe I've thought of her in years, which doesn't speak too well of me, I know. I wish I 'd asked a million questions of all my "elders", but I never did. And I had three of my four grandparents around until I was 19, married, and about to have my first baby. What a dunce I turned out to be... Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out, on the remote chance that someone will know something about Aunt Charlotte. Thanks for listening! Barbara in MO

And now the big book I found in England. This old book has 821 pages(8 1/2" x 11 1/2").It's Volume I of "Wilson's Historical,Traditionary, and Imaginative Tales of the Borders and of Scotland". I can not find a copyright date but it appears to be quite old.It might be rare;I'd like to find Volume Two. Stories(of which there are about 170) include: "Disasters of Johnny ARMSTRONG" Johnny,a Carlisle ironmonger(owner of a hardware store),encounters many misadventures while trying to visit relatives in northern Scotland(Brechin).Johnny was a widower with a 14 yr.-old son,Johnny,Jr. > "Mary ARMSTRONG"Mary,18,[dtr.of Reverend John Armstrong of Marston(age - about 60)]wants to elope with her lover,Henry Strafford, but his father objects.Mary (pregnant)gets ill and dies. The lover is seen grieving at the funeral. The next day the lover's father,Squire Strafford, is found killed. Is it difficult to guess who killed Squire Strafford? > "Archy ARMSTRONG" [son of Sandy(freebooter & reiver) Sandy and Elspeth ARMSTRONG] This is quite a poignant and info-filled story about their battles with soldiers of King James VI and Elizabeth of England & Scotland. [John Armstrong o' Gilnokie(kin of Sandy's family) is mentioned.] Sandy Armstrong,King of Tarrasside, lived with his wife Elspeth and their youngest son,Archy(12 years old at this time)at the Cleughfoot which was on the side of the Tarras River,10 miles from Langholm,Dumfriesshire.Archy had six brothers;five died in battle and one by bloodhound. After Archie and his Bairn(son)head up a raid on Penrith,King James Stuart VI and Elizabeth of England & Scotland send 150 soldiers(whose numbers swell to 1,000)are sent to get rid of Sandy Armstrong & Bairn. Before the battle,Sandy tells "King Jamie's men" that "I hae lived thir(Cleoughfoot)fifty years by my ain hand,an' the man was never born that dared say Sandy armstrong laid finger on the widow's cow or the puir man's mare,or that he scrimpt the orphan's meal. But I hae been a protector o' the poor and helpless, and a defender of the cowan-hearted, for a sma' but honest blackmail, that other men,wi' no half the strength o' Sandy Armstrong, wadna ta'en up at their foot. ... I shall surrender as an Armstrong surrenders -- when the breath is out." Sandy escapes, Elspeth & Archy are captured but are released because Sandy was the one they really wanted.Cleughfoot is destroyed.Elspeth becomes ill and dies.Archy buries her. Fifteen years later(Archy is 30 yrs.old),Archy has learned to read & write and is working as a herdsman for the chief of Dick Scott.Archy had wounded Dick in the battle at Cleughfoot(he had severed three of his fingers). Archy gets into a fight with Three-fingered Dick, stabs him, and has to run away to avoid prosecution.Archy comes across an old beggar whom he finds out is his father,Sandy Armstrong.Sandy had for 20 years served in foreign wars and then disguised himself as a beggar. Sandy gives Archy enough gold to quash the prosecution by Three-fingered Dick.Sandy dies and Archy buries him by Elspeth.A group of horsemen of the Elliot Clan(who were sent to find Sandy)ride up and one of the chief men of the clan has compassion for Archy and employs him to watch sheep. Archy marries the daughter of the chief of the Elliot clan and becomes a sheep farmer. Another Armstrong-related book I found in England is titled,"Settle to Carlisle -a Pictoral Guide to the Most Dramatic Train Journey in England". Of course,Carlisle is in the Borders Region which is rich with Armstrong history.Mentioned is the fact that as late as 1600,Scotby(station)was the victim of one of the cross-border raids that had been going on for centuries under the joint command of the Border reiver Kinmont Willie,a 140-strong band of outlaws known as Sandy's Bairns burnt and pillaged ,taking prisoners and a hundred head of cattle. Now,almost a suburb of Carlisle,Scotby has a church of 1854 built by Anthony Salvin.(Sandy's Bairns refers to those born to Sandy Armstrong.) On a recent month-long sojourn through southern England,I found several books which concern ARMSTRONGs.The first that I will report on is a booklet of copies of paintings of John Armstrong. These paintings were exhibited in an exhibition organized by the Royal Academy in England. John was the 3rd son of the Rev.Wm.Alexander ARMSTRONG.John was born on Nov.14th,1893,in Hastings,Sussex. The family then moved to West Dean near Goodwood. When the First World War broke out,John enlisted early and became an officer in the Royal Field Academy. Anyone interested in more about this John Armstrong or is related to him, please contact me.
