Hi, all: I'm still here - but lurking. Mother-in-law just passed on Sunday, and funeral Friday, so a little busy right now! Hello to all the old timers. John - "He-who-catches-big-fish" is the A-Cabin in Alaska still standing after your recent shaker? M. Toni Perry Huntington Beach
Toni Sorry to hear of your Mother-in-Law's passing.. Our condolences. re cabin: Don't know.. winterized and parked the boat back in Sept. Rivers still aren't frozen and we have no snow... Neighbor who lives out there year round has radio-telephone problems, so haven't been able to find out if there are any problems or not... I visualize that the shaker, perhaps "popped" the door open, The bears haven't denned yet, so perhaps the 3 bears will choose to den in my cabin... in that event, the Mrs. will have a new black fur coat right after freeze up..! Hi All, I've always have my eyes open for any info on Archibald Armstrong, who died in Delaware, 1775, and left rights to a lease in "the Kingdom of Ireland, Province of Ulster County of Farmanaugh and Parish of Aughaberger known by the name of Alaclinabrire" to his sons. I find it interesting him living in Delaware and holding a lease to land in Ireland. Besides that, I am always interested in Armstrongs with roots in Delaware. Earliest Delaware Armstrongs I have run across are John and William Armstrong in Delaware 1722. There was an Able Armstrong and an Alexander Armstrong somewhere a little after that and a couple more Williams. It's hard, when you are looking at them on paper, they all look the same. Happy Hunting! Steve A.

Dear Armstrong List mates, Here is my second brick wall. They are the Armstrongs on my mother's side of the family. Katharine I "Kitty" Armstrong is my mother's Grandmother. She married Allen Long of the well researched Longs of Culpeper County, VA. Her sister, Elizabeth Armstrong, married Allen's brother, Nicholas Long. I believe the two girls were from "HIDDLE," Tennessee but I can find no town by that name. These two couples moved to Kansas in the 1830's probably on the same wagon train. I believe the marriages took place in Kansas. The Longs had moved from Virginia and lived for a time in Warren County, TN. before moving to Clinton, Henry County, Kansas. Allen, a Union soldier, died of wounds at the battle of Lone Jack in Jefferson City, Missouri, and is buried at the National Cemetery on the battlefield. My brother and I have been trying to discover the parents of Kitty and Elizabeth for several years. Any help will be appreciated. Dear list mates, Here's my brick wall. These folks emigrated to the U. S. from Quorndon in Leicestershire in 1803. John and Mary and their 8 or so children. The last one, Richard was born in New York. They were all dissenting baptists and I feel that they came to the U. S. for religious freedom. John was in the stocking trade in Quorn, but bought land in upstate New York, and held local office. The first generation listed is mostly speculation, although I have some good evidence. I decend from Joshua, the 5th son, who left New York because of religious differences in Pittsford, NY and moved to Ohio. 1 John Armstrong b: Abt. 1740 in England .. +Elizabeth Landers b: Nov 28, 1746 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, Eng. m: Feb 1760 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, Eng. . 2 John Armstrong b: Feb 9, 1760 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, Eng. d: Aug 24, 1812 in Pittsford, Monroe Co., NY ..... +Mary Simons b: May 23, 1766 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, Eng. m: Apr 15, 1784 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, Eng. d: Jul 22, 1835 in Pittsford, Monroe Co., NY ..... 3 Thomas Simons Armstrong b: Feb 22, 1786 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, England d: Sep 11, 1828 in Pittsford, Monroe Co., NY ..... 3 John Armstrong b: May 23, 1788 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, England d: Feb 4, 1841 in Rochester, Monroe Co., NY ......... +Ann Eliza Parker b: Nov 22, 1780 in Lincolnshire, England d: Nov 15, 1857 in Pittsford, Monroe Co., NY ........ 4 John S. Hi All It's been interesting to see some familiar names on recent messages, obviously I'm not the only one still "listening in". I'm still working on my various ARMSTRONG families in Northumberland - but with so little interest in UK ARMSTRONGs on the list there seems little point in posting much on that particular subject. I keep an eye open for fellow UK ARMSTRONG hunters though. The 1901 census site has finally gone live and I've been spending some time playing with that - although by the time it had, I'd already got the whole of the 1901 census for my home village by other means, and knew where all my ARMSTRONGs were. I wish there was some distinction made in subject headings for UK interests - especially on those irritating "Message Board" enquiries - then I wouldn't need to waste my time opening them at all. We are still managing to feed our travel addiction - we were in Athens in January, Barcelona in May and have just returned from a holiday in Turkey. We were based in the village of Cirali on Olimpos beach, it's about 1 hour's drive west of Antalya, at one end of the 3km long beach is the ancient city of Olimpos, and at the other is the start of the climb up to the Chimaera - where the flames leap out of the rocks. The Turkish photos (including Olimpos, Chimaera, Myra Rock Tombs, Aspendos Theatre, Ancient Perge etc) will be on the website eventually. In the UK we've had a few weekends away in Bath, Shrewsbury and Bury St. Edmunds. To see my family history, and the various travel photos visit our website at www.dominouk.clara.net Anyway, a roll call would seem a good idea, it would be nice to meet all the Long-Lasting (I'm not saying "old" ARMSTRONG researchers again. All the best Kathy
strange how so many of the people moved to the same areas. I see that in my other lines too. Do you have anything more on this Samuel? He married Delilah Jones. Did they both move to Wisconsin? Delilah remarried to a McIntosh? And her daughter born in 1863 was a Armstrong or a McIntosh? I am just a bit confused.... Sorry Anna Anna, I don't think Samuel Armstrong moved to Wis. Delilah was living by/with her sister in Wis. Delilah had a daughter named Mary Armstrong who was born in 1863 in Wis. Wait a minute ! if the daughter has the last name of Armstrong then he would have had to be in Wis at that time too. Will look in the courthouse tomorrow for a death cert. for him and birth cert. for Mary . Delilah did marry a William Mc Intosh in 1858 , will look for a marriage cert. for them also. Any one you want me to look up at the Sauk Co. Wis. court house records? Its right in town here. Carol
My oldest ARMSTRONG is William A. married Margaret DEWING son Galbraith Robert (Robin) ARMSTRONG b. 1806 d. Jan. 18, 1882, occupation: farmer Wife of Galbraith was Jane ARMSTRONG (her maiden name was ARMSTRONG)b. 1809 d. March 4, 1879 (breast cancer) Jane and Galbraith (went by Robert) lived and died in Moyard Benburb, Dungannon, Co. Tyrone. They were members of Parish of Clonfeacle, Church of England. The ruins of the family homestead still stand. Galbraith was my brick wall until I received records from Parish of Clonfeacle that showed that Robert was present at his wife's death, thus learned that he went by Robert, I had been looking for Galbraith! Daughters Eliza Jane (my great grandmother), Isabella and Catherine migrated to New Zealand. Descendants of only son, Gilbert, still reside in N. Ireland. Would like to find where Galbraith and Jane were from. Nice to see some of the 'long lasting' list member's postings! Linda Hamid Roseville, California

This is as far back as our Armstrongs go... Family legend has it that William Armstrong (b. ABT 1792 possibly Scotland, d. 1862 in E. Machias, Maine) worked on the property of an earl, fell in love with the earl's daughter, Margaret Langhorn (b. 12 Aug 1789 possibly England), but the relationship was forbidden by her father. They ran away and got married on March 3, 1814 at St. Mary's in Carlisle. According to their marriage certificate, at the time of their marriage, William was from St. Mary's parish in Carlisle and Margaret was from Gretna in North Britain (Scotland). They had a child, Francis C. Armstrong, on February 9, 1813 and then another son, Robert W. Armstrong, on August 12, 1815. They came to the United States in 1819 (they are on the 1820 census) via The Kitty which shipwrecked off the Maine coast on Cross Island. They settled in Machias, Maine and continued to grow their family. Would anyone out there have information on either the Langhorn or Armstrong family? We are stuck and cannot locate either sets of parents or William/Margaret's siblings (if any). Thanks for any help you can lend. Patty
Hi, My Armstrongs originated in Co. Antrim, No. Ireland, specifically in the area of Ballymena. There are a lot of Armstrongs from that area. My earliest A. is Archibald, b. circa 1774, m. Rachel McClurkan circa 1794. They had a bunch of children including Hugh (no, JohnD. says he's not HIS Hugh) b. 1795, Samuel, my ancestor, b. 1797, and Thomas, b. 1805 (no, John D. says he's not his Thomas, either!). Samuel m. Jane Reid in 1827. They both died in Co. Antrim. I have about given up finding out more about these folks. Samuel and Jane had my ggrandfather, James, b. 1840, who married Anna B. McCoy in Belfast. Not sure of the wedding date, probably late 1850s. Now....having more or less exhausted finding more about these people, I would like to concentrate on my grandfather's generation of silblings and hope to find USA connections to these Armstrongs. Here they are.....do any of these sound familiar? I am always looking for "cousins." Children of James and Anna B. Armstrong who came to the USA in 1868: Eliza Jane b. around 1860, Ireland William, b. March 1865, Ireland (my grandfather, m. Rebecca Milligan in Boston. William was a cooper.) James b. 1868, MA, USA John b. abt. 1872, MA, USA Francis H. b. abt. 1875, MA, USA Annabell b. abt. 1877, MA, USA George H. b. 1879, MA, USA George H. Armstrong my have married "Esther" and had daughters, Violet and Marie. I would love to find anybody connected to the people listed above. I don't know if these people stayed in MA and I don't know what happened to any of my grandfather's brothers and sisters! The name is common in this area and none of the first names are that unusual. The girls probably married, so their names would have changed. At first I thought "Eliza Jane" was an unusual name, but when I started searching I found that not to be true. If any of the above people sound familiar, please let me know! Here's my line once again.... William Armstrong Sr. was born around 1720 somewhere in Ireland and married Jane Irwin on 15 Feb. 1747 in Killeshandra, Church of Ireland. He died about 1808, but his will was not proved until January of 1810 by his widow, who was his second wife, Mary. She was evidently a lot younger than he was and had since remarried to a Mr. Flin(n). William and Jane Armstrong had children: 1. Elizabeth prob. bp. 3 Feb. or 27 Aug. 1749 - md. Mr. Keirnan or Kiernan in Ireland 2. William ("Billie the Beau") prob. bp. 26 Sep. 1751, md. 1) a Miss Broughton and 2) -?-, died 9 Apr. 1830 at Leamington, Co. Warc., England - a quack doctor and merchant in London, spent much time in St. Croix - children: James md. maybe Susanna Marche 1805 St. Croix and died 1812?; Thomas md. Widow Judith Aletta Heiliger Faucett 1813 St. Croix; Anna Maria (md. Abraham M. Cuvalie/Cuvelje 1811 St. Croix); and a red-headed child by second wife born in England ca. 1825-30 3. Son (name unknown) - became an attorney in Cork 4. Thomas (my line) prob. bp. 19 Nov. 1757 - md. Mary Aletta Biggs, daughter of Dr. Benjamin Biggs and Mary Aletta Meyer, ca. 1783 in St. Croix - died ca. 1787 in Ireland - children: Benjamin 1784 died unmarried ca. 1806-08 in Navy; Dr. William born 1786 md. Catherine Mary Taylor 1812 and Widow Sarah Stewart Steele 1829; and Thomas born 1787 md. Catherine Louisa Cornelius 1810 and died 1863 with 17 children who mostly moved to New York and Connecticut in the 1800's. 5. Mary bp. ca. 1759-61 - md. John Goodfellow, an officer in the British Navy - prob. died in Dublin (after 1808) - children: John (had no children) and another son, name unknown 6. Robert prob. bp 29 Apr. 1762 - prob. died young 7. John M. prob. bp. 16 Jan. 1764 - md. 1) Macrae Dalrymple 12 Mar. 1801 and 2) Ellen Kirk 1818 - died 1830 in Leamington, Co. Warc., England - children: Glencairn Dalrymple born 1802 md. David Shaw 1826; Charles William born 1805 married Isabella Bagley 1844; Anna Maria born 1807 and married William Dysart Smith 1833; Edward Pakenham born 1808; and a son from his second marriage, John born 1820 and died 1890 in Chicago, IL 8. James - an illegitimate child - possibly bp. 11 Apr. 1744 of 29 Oct. 1767? - a merchant - married and had several children, went to Demerara, British Guiana, got ship-wrecked and his wife and children died there William and his second wife, Mary, had the following: 1. Sarah prob. born ca. 1790-1800 - alive and underage in 1801 I am descended from Thomas through Dr. William Armstrong through his son, William R.T. Armstrong, who went first to St. Croix and then to Wisconsin. His twin brother, Thomas John Armstrong, remained in St. Croix and had three unions with black women, leaving numerous children. William (born ca. 1720) probably descends from the Armstrongs of County Leitrim. However, this area is so close to County Fermanagh, that he could also be descended from those Armstrongs. Other names connected to the William A* family in Ireland are Richard Conoly/Connelly and Matthew Johnston of Ballinamore, Leonard Park Jr. of Lahana, William Brown, and the Armstrongs and Biggs of St. Croix in the West Indies but originally of Ireland. Names associated with the family in St. Croix 1740-1800 but possibly from Ireland are: Thomas Lake, Andrew Irwin, John Ryan, William Manning, John Johnson, and Captain Lorentz Nissen. I would like to correspond with anyone who has information on this family or the family of Robert Armstrong of Longfield, County Leitrim, who may be connected somehow. And I would like to correspond with anyone descending from the several Armstrongs of Santa Cruz, California, who are descended from my family. I'm also still looking for anyone who is descended from John Armstrong (the youngest son of William and Jane of Co. Cavan) and his two wives, Isabella Wilson and Henrietta Wilson who came from Cherry Valley, Antrim, Ireland to Chicago ca. 1844-55. They supposedly had land at Arcola, Illinois and in Chicago). Barb and List, Fount and Gerri have moved from TN to FL they've sold their place in TN and about now, they are still busy unpacking in FL... I imagine as soon as they get a few things unpacked they'll re-subscribe to the list. We suffered no damage here at our house, at least none that we've noticed yet. except for the stains in our skivvies. It was the longest shaker I've ever experienced, (we were in San Francisco in '64). I've not been able to make contact with any neighbors out by my remote cabin, so I'm unsure about what condition it is in at the moment.
