    1. [ARMSTRONG-L] Merry Christmas Prettige Kerstdagen
    2. Rita and Joe
    3. Dear All, Rita and I have chosen this way to send festive greetings to all our friends this year. Our constant to-ings and fro-ings between U.K. and Belgium make for an interesting life but it knocks routine into a cocked hat! We have struggled to despatch many actual cards of the traditional type in Britain, and this week in Europe but still we have probably missed out some. Time to enter the 21st century and issue our Christmas and New Year Greetings electronically. We shall see the year in about an hour earlier than is my wont, last time was over 50 years ago for me. (Europe is one hour ahead of Britain). Time was when I joined the throngs outside the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Newcastle Upon Tyne. They call it the party city now, we had them then, no fireworks, no pubs open, just many thousands of people together to see in the new year to the chime from the clock tower. Many of you have been regaled with my quotes from Rabbie Burns for these occasions, and of course. This year is no exception! Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And days o' lang syne? And for auld lang syne my Jo, (dear) For auld lang syne. Well take a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne. Please take special note, that's what Robert Burns wrote, he did not write about 'sake ofs' whatever they might be, simply three words "auld lang syne" in modern English, "old long since." Syne is pronounced Sign, not zyne. So when the time comes you'll all know how to sing it correctly Eh, <Grin>. A good yule to you and yours, Goodwill dwell - within your doors. We wish ye all, that which ye seek, And lastly; May your lum aye reek! It's no the frosty winter wind , It's no the driving drift and snaw; But Aye the tear comes in my e'e, To think on him that's far awa! Best wishes for 2003 to you and yours. Prettige Kerstdagen en Gelukkig Nieuwjaar as we say in Belgium. A quote from Robbie Burns that I like is; Wit,and grace, and love and beauty, In ae constellation shine; To adore thee is my duty, Goddess o' this soul o' mine! Bonny Wee Thing. With love to all of you from Rita. >From Rita De Kock and Joe Armstrong,

    1. [ARMSTRONG-L] The year is 1902, one hundred years ago ...
    2. Rosemary Webb
    3. Thought somebody might enjoy this...rosie ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO - 1902 - What life was like. The year is 1902, one hundred years ago ... what a difference a century makes. Here are the U.S. statistics for 1902. The average life expectancy in the US was 47 (forty-seven) Only 14 Percent of the homes in the US had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars. There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average wage in the US was 22 cents an hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist$2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births in the US took place at home. Ninety percent of all US physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason. The five leading causes of death in the US were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was 30. Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented. There were no Mother's Day or Father's Day. One in ten US adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Eighteen percent of households in the US had at least one full-time servant or domestic. There were only about 230 reported murders in the entire US.

In the rush and jumble of the season, please take the time to visit here: http://www.anyservicemember.org/ It is a web site where you may write a Soldier, Sailor, Marine, Airman or Coast Guardsman or to all branches with your good wishes. Some of you on this list received a private message from me about this, but others bounced back. I then realized I should have simply sent it to the entire list. As I type, there have only been 250,786 visitors to the site which obviously means less messages posted there than that total. That's not that many when you consider this web site was began after the anthrax scare of 2001. If you have the time and inclination ... why not ask your friends to take part, too? As always, clemi

She was born circa 1833 in Indiana to Samuel & Nancy (Beer) Shimer. She married (1) George Ketterman, (2) John Blackford, (3) Jacob Hamilton, and (4) James L. Armstrong. Known or suspected children are Amanda Ketterman Leach, Julia Blackford Bailey, Jesse Blackford, John Blackford, and Frances or Charles Hamilton. She and James Armstrong were married in Jasper Co. in 1876. They were enumerated in the 1880 census in Hardin County, Iowa, and I have no record of them after that. I was hoping that the Nancy Armstrong buried in Guthrie County was Nancy Shimer; however, Iowa has no record of the death of a Nancy Armstrong from 1901-1903, so I can't tell from the death certificate.
