Hi All: This years party has brought me out of lurker mode. Sounds so exciting - Can't wait to see other parts of the world and have a hen party with some of the other ol' hens on the list. Let's catch up - family news, gossip and a nip or two to losen our tongues. I'm in good ol' Arkansas, USA. The Northeast corner so we can visit MO, TN and MS all within an hour or two the house. Cousin Vicki, Oak is my favorite wood too! When we moved down here to COLD Fl completely, in Oct., I brought all my oak, walnut and cherry I had room for and all the shop equipment my down-sized shop could hold. But, since then, all the woodwork I've had time for is Sweetie's house! # :-(( Yes, bring your camera because there's no telling what I might do! I get crazy sometimes. Edie, I think poverty was the main reason most of the Armstrongs came from Ireland to North America. The offer of free land was a big enticement. Can't blame them! Ya'll are right. Our lead guitar in the little band we have was Lonzo and Oscar's manager for a long time. He told me how many records they sold and it was a very large amount for that time. Ben, here in the "Heartland of America", we're waiting for the temp to get UP to the 20's! (Actually, I love it when it's really, really cold, like right now. It was -5 last night, and that's really good sleeping weather. But this place in the summer is for the birds: temps upper 90's and low 100's, and the humidity feels like you've been hit with a wet wash cloth. That part I hate with a passion. Man (or Woman) was not built to endure that sort of heat, at least this one wasn't. I guess I've been outdone in the offspring department: We have eight, all grown up and married except for one, and he's getting married in May. (We had nine, but lost our last little girl.) But also have 10 grandchildren, and FIVE great grandchildren. (All of them have been born since Ed, my husband, died in August of 1997. The first was born the day after his funeral, so I like to think that they met in passing. But I can't figure out how this can be, because, of course, I'm only 19 years old, myself. I think the little green wee people had something to do with it... We were stationed in Texas for some time, at Kingsville NAS. And it was hot there, too. All the time we were in Cuba, I kept thinking that when we came back to the States, we'd be somewhere where there's actually a change of seasons, changing leaves, and some snow. So what did we get? Heat, heat, and more heat!! Patti, sorry to tell you that all six of our daughters are married, as is one son, and the other soon will be. But I do have a beautiful red-headed granddaughter, just short of 20, but I think she's planning on about six years of college! She's a sophomore now, so that's a ways to go! I'll probably be at the party, but am going to let you guys do most of the planning. Having just lost my sister two weeks ago, I'm not quite in the mood. Just somebody please bring a few really good steaks for me, and I'll just sit quietly in a corner, and eat it quietly, and I won't bother anyone. Of course, if it gets as lively as the last one, I just might really perk up a bit, and maybe dance on the piano. Who was it who danced on the table the last time? Patti, wasn't that you? And there was Fount, sleeping peacefully on the floor, with the debris all around him! Barb in MO
Barb, My heart goes out to you in the loss of your sister. I have a sister, and I can't begin to imagine the pain it must bring to lose one. But I hope you'll be feeling like at coming to the c-party. I think you'd enjoy just sitting by the fire with all of us, letting the flames' hypnotic effect soothe your heart. I wouldn't intrude on your thoughts, except to give you some big hugs from time to time. They're something I'm known for- in a good way. So fight whatever temptation you may feel to be an isolate, okay? Cuz your family is with you, caring for you. Jill PS- What part of MO are you in? I've got a bunch of Stepp/Lloyd relatives around the Cape Girardeau area. __________________ "Gypsy gold does not chink and glitter. It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark." Gypsy saying
Sorry to be late with this guys. This is not really a "casserole"....it's actually stacked enchiladas, rather than rolled. Use a large casserole dish, spray it with Pam. Oven to 425 3 lg. cans red enchilada sauce (I use Hatch or Las Palmas..check the ingredients, you don't want one with tomato sauce in it...red sauce is red chilis & seasonings, no tomato sauce) 18 corn tortillas 1 large yellow onion (the ones that make your eyes water!) chopped finely 8 cups grated cheese (colby, Jack, muenster, asadero, whatever--I use several types together. Lean ground meat, 3 pounds, browned, drained thoroughly, salt & pepper to taste. Put the 3 cans sauce in a deep skillet, bring to boil and turn down to simmer...and here's the tricky part....take 4 tortillas, drop them in the simmering sauce, one by one...they will start to get puffy...remove and layer those 4 one the bottom of the bowl. (this takes only a minute or two..if you leave them too long, they will fall apart in the sauce, not long enough, they will be hard.) After the first layer of tortillas is in the bowl, layer the meat, onion and cheeses...repeat this till the ingredients are gone, or the bowl is full, whichever comes first!! Your top layer should be tortillas. Take the sauce remaining in the skillet, pour it over the top.....with a large spoon, lift the edges around all sides of the bowl and let the sauce run down into the enchiladas. Then cover the top with lots of grated cheese....pop it in the oven for about 30 minutes....and there you have it....Voila!!! Ooooops, I mean Ole!!!!! Someone asked about Pico de Gallo......Chop all these raw ingredients together...(it's like a Mexican relish or chow-chow) green chili, jalapenos, tomatoes, onions, garlic, cilantro...add water, a bit of vinegar, and some salt.........and folks, this is divine...and the longer it sits the better it gets...amounts?? Well, I'm not a "recipe" cook...I'm a "hey that looks about right" and a "wow, taste that!" cook.......your tolerance for HOT wll dictate your amounts!! Guacamole......mash about 6 soft ripe (the blacker the better) avocados, save one seed....throw in finely chopped onion, salt, pepper, garlic (to your taste) Be sure and bury one seed in the bowl of guacamole---keeps it from turning black for hours. This is a good basic dish....spice it up with your choice of "stuff" jalapenos, cilantro, cream cheese, what ever!!! Enjoy......... As you may remember Fount a couple of years ago Joyce Armstrong and I sat for hours recording all of the Tasmania Convicts named Armsrong and some of those had first been convicts that had been sent to the mainland australia and when free had reoffended and were set to Tasmania. there were quite a lot of them, that is why I wondered if they had gone to America as Convicts. Of course they were not criminals in the true sense, a good many were sent to work to build up the colony as not many would have come voluntarily to nothing much in those days. HI, Jill: How about the divinity cookie recipe?? (PS: I don't cook, just collect recipes so that when someone comes who does, I can get them to try it!!) M. Toni Perry Huntington Beach, CA
Okay, okay. I've been brow beaten into giving up my Grandma Fahlstrom's recipe BEFORE you actually come for the c-party. Blame it on Toni... :-) These cookies are somewhat like those little white pecan cookies that seem to pop up out of nowhere around Xmas time. I LOVE 'em; used to sneak into Gramma's kitchen and steal them out of the stoneware cookie jar. Grandma Fahlstrom's Divinity Cookies Cream together: 1 lb. powdered sugar (3 1/1 c sifted) 1 2/3 c. shortening Add: 2 2/3 c. pastery flour 4/5 c. finely chopped walnuts or pecans 4 teasp. vanilla a pinch of salt Form two long rolls. Wrap in waxed paper and chill overnight. Slice & bake 350 F for 8 min. DO NOT BROWN! Cool on racks, preferably when no one else is around; then scarf 'em up BEFORE 'anyone else' returns. :-D That's it. BTW, Toni, I think you've hit upon a great strategy!: (PS: I don't cook, just collect recipes so that when someone comes who does, I can get them to try it!!) Know that he was in the Cairo, Alexander County, IL in the 1880's, he approx 20 years old. Married to Angeline Skiles in 1879, but I lose him after that....... --------------------------------------------- Linda, I do not find Lathanial--or any of your ARMSTRONGS--listed in either Book III or Book IV of "Where They Sleep, Cemetery Inscriptions of Pulaski Co., Illinois" (most Cairo residents were buried in Pulaski County cemeteries). I suggest that you subscribe and post an inquiry to the Alexander County RootsWeb List, and look-ups in the other "Where They Sleep" volumes. Also, write the Alexander County Clerk/Recorder for a copy of Angeline's DC. If information on the DC states she was a widow, at least you will know that you're searching for death information on Lathaniel between 1891 and 1900. Good luck on your research. I think I may remember a song like that John. I am 59 this year, so it has to be in my time. Edie ----- Original Message ----- From: "John D.
