About 1800 one of my Armstrong ancestors married a girl named Harley Braswell. Harley is an unusual name, so there may be a connection. IF you get back a few generations and into NC, drop me a line. Fount Is that moonshine all alcohol --- my Dad used to distill the wine when it was undrinkable and he often had "other" stuff in there. Talk about depleating the brain cells. That did it for sure. Hello! I got this from the Johnston, NC list, & thought I would pass it on. It is a commercial site - they're trying to sell copies of wills, but they do list 214 Armstrongs (including where they lived & profession). The wills supposedly cover the years 1500-1875, soon to be 1901. Anyway, here's the URL: www.scottishdocuments.com/content/default.asp. Roxanne

Don't make me more nervous than I already am! Got mixed up in the x ray room one day last week. Was supposed to have a chest x ray and the girl said to drop my pants and lay down. She proceeded to take a picture of my privates and then said thanks Mr Williams, we got a good picture. I said my name is Armstrong and she said she was supposed to do a chest x ray of me and I said I just though my chest had fallen. She said put my pants on and take off my shirt! I'm about to get cold feet on all my tests. Hey Fount Ray - My hubby had a prostrate exam by a young doctor who was little horizontally challenged. Ron relayed his nervousness at the exam and the doctor told him he didn't need to worry unless he felt to hands on his shoulders...Didn't have that problem did ya??????? LOL Your in my prayers. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/kQB.2ACIB/2605 Message Board Post: Hi. I am searching for the unknown father of my ARMSTRONG line. The information I have is from the 1880 census for Lawrence Twp., Lawrence Co., ILL: Isaac MANSFIELD Head age:31 b.KY Mary D. MANSFIELD Wife age:30 b.OH(second marriage for her...she was married to the unknown ARMSTRONG first). Cora MANSFIELD Dau age:9months b.ILL Dolly ARMSTRONG Step-Dau age:10 b.ILL(she was also known as Haley Mae) Thomas ARMSTRONG Step-Son age:8 b.ILL Clinton MINARD Other age:13 b.ILL(brother of Mary D.) Robert H. MINARD Father-In-Law age:61 b.OH(father of Mary D.) The unknown ARMSTRONG is born in OHIO or TENNESSEE according to 1880 and 1900 census information. I looked at the actual image of the 1880 census and Robert H. MINARD'S last name could be something else. It was quite hard to decipher. Thank you to anyone who may be able to steer me in the right direction. Margaret
Greetings, Members of the Armstrong List. Please let me introduce myself. I'm Dave Strong, and have been a long time member of the Strong List. I have just subscribed to the Armstrong List in order to encourage an exchange of information. There is a hypothesis that the names Strang and/or Strong may in some instances be a variant of the name Armstrong. I am interested in attempting to prove or disprove this hypothesis. Now we have a new tool which may prove or disprove relationships, and aid us in persuing the most likely research which will prove the connection.... a DNA Study. I have established a webpage initiating the LeStrange-Strange-Strang-Stronge-Strong DNA Study. See: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegalstrongs/dnastudy.htm The webpage is fully operational, and we are engaged in testing various other hypotheses. As the coordinator of the DNA Study, I am hoping that there will be some Armstrongs who are interested in DNA Studies generally, and who would be willing to join our study on a experimental basis. I suggest that if we do show either positive or negative results re the hypothesis that there is a relationship in some cases between Armstrong and Strong or Strang lineages, we will all have learned something. Further, if there is some interested researcher of the Armstrong lineages who would be willing to take on the responsibility of coordinating a DNA study limited to Armstrongs, this is an opportunity to learn about DNA studies and get some ideas as to how to set one up. I would be willing to help spin off the Armstrong results into a separate study group when it seems appropriate. You are invited to visit the webpage, and if possible, join the study. See the procedures for joining the study at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegalstrongs/dnastudy.htm#members You must be a male Armstrong to participate in the testing for the study, but if you are a female or descendant of a female Armstrong you can work with your male Armstrong relatives to have them tested. We have obtained a reasonably good group rate for the testing, competitive with other rates available on the market, to the best of my knowledge, and this is an opportunity to take advantage of the research possibilities presented. This study is for the benefit of everyone.... if possible, please consider joining even if you are certain you have traced your lineage as far back as it is possible to go. We are interested particularily in participants who can trace their lineages to Scotland and or Ireland, but will welcome anyone who wishes to join the study. By establishing a prototype of the Armstrong "haplotype(s)" in the DNA Study, you will provide researchers of un-linked lineages with a possibility of matching that DNA haplotype... proving or disproving a relationship link. For an idea of how the results are presented, see: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegalstrongs/dnaresults.htm Interested researchers will not be able to find out the name of their missing link... but they may well be able to establish whether they are on the right track, and gain some prediction of how many generations back they will have to go in order to establish a "Most Recent Common Ancestor". The same can be said for many lines being researched around the world. The webpage outlines some of the goals of the study which may be useful to every person researching one of the variant surnames in the study. I suspect there may be additional goals which may be of particular interest to you as Armstrong researchers. Please feel free to suggest any such goal which might usefully be made a part of this study. The DNA Study has certain limitations dictated by the technology involved. Not everyone will be able to join the study, but perhaps they will have a male Armstrong relative who can join the study. Please try to enlist volunteers from any of these lines in the study. One can join the study directly from the website, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegalstrongs/dnastudy.htm#members and get the advantage of a reduced rate for the test provided to us by Family Tree DNA, a genetic testing company whose services are being used by well over 250 "one-name" family surname studies. The company has an established reputation, and is providing us with a service which may prove invaluable. If you have any questions after reviewing the webpage, please let me know. This is a cooperative research effort involving the efforts of everyone who joins the study. There is no proprietarial interest in the results of the study. It's benefits are intended to be available to all. I invite any and all interested researchers of the various lineages out there to jump in and suggest possible benefits of this study for their particular lines. Volunteers are needed. Please consider joining the study! Regards Dave Strong ... Sweet Cousin Marilyn! I have been in and out so much lately with Dr's appointments and such, I haven't had time to do my e mailing! The Dr's are standing in line waiting for me! One is tring to find a blockage in my heart and one is trying to find prostrate cancer. I just want to play my bass and drink my drink! The banjo picker was a new member of our band. He was a wonderful Blue Grass style picker. He had played with the group, "Tall Timber". I still would enjoy trying to have our party. I will bring my electric bass, crawfish and CC with Diet Dew. Make a list of all the mixen's for the A list. Sounds like your trip was quite an adventure! We go on a cruse in Dec. to a bunch of islands. Fount ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marilyn R. Don't knock the Diet Dew if you never tried it! # :-)) I also put lime juice in it! I drank my CC straight every day since I was a child but in my later years, my stomach demanded I thin it down a bit and thanks to my step son, I tried the Diet Dew and only wish I had a bigger container so I could jump in and drink it from the bottom up! From: http://www.rootsweb.com/~indian/index.htm?sourceid=00224688806748123187 Armstrong Family ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SOURCE: History of the Early Settlement & Indian Wars of West Virginia by Wills De Hass. A Mr. ARMSTRONG, one of the early settlers at Belpre, having secured some land on the VA side, built a mill & cabin near the head of Blannerhasset's Island, & in the spring of 1794 moved over his family, consisting of his wife & 5 children. Shortly after their change of residence, a party of Indians concealed themselves on the river hill immediately back of ARMSTRONG's house & in full view of the stockade at Belpre. At early dawn, Mr. ARMSTRONG heard that so often fatal decoy, the turkey-call, & taking his dog & gun, sallied forth to secure a shot before they should leave the roost. One of the sons, taken prisoner, & now living near Columbus, Ohio, relates what followed. " After proceeding a short distance, either from the dog or some other circumstance, ARMSTRONG became alarmed, retreated to the house & barred the door. The Indians pursued & endeavored to get it open but failing on the first attempt they took a rail to effect their purpose. While they were endeavoring to gain entrance, Mr. ARMSTRONG snapped his gun, in an attempt to shoot, but it did not go off; he then ascended the loft, & removing some of the roof, escaped through the opening, while the Indians were breaking down the door. The alarm was given to the stockade in upper Belpre & a party went over. They met Mr. ARMSTRONG & the 2 oldest sons who had been in the mill. Mrs. ARMSTRONG they found dead on the outside of the cabin. It appeared as if she had attempted to escape from the roof as her husband did, but being a heavy woman, had probably fallen & broken her leg. Two children were dead & a little girl still alive but insensible, though when disturbed, she would say, " What's that?" Mrs. ARMSTRONG & 2 children were scalped; one child about 2 years old was not. Two sons who were in the cabin were taken prisoners & carried to their towns, where they remained until the close of the war, when their elder brothers brought them from the Indian country.
