    1. [ARMSTRONG-L] Party
    2. Grace Smith
    3. Okay, I am finally back and ready to party with y'all. Where are we now? I have brought with me my elusive Great-grandfather, John Manuel Armstrong. He is sitting in the chair beside me (well, actually he is taking up two chairs because I understand that he weighed about 350 pounds.) but refuses to tell me anything. All I know about him is that his father was James Armstrong and his mother was Sarah Jane McCoy. He was born April 13, 1863 in Woodford County, Kentucky. He married Mary Elizabeth McCoy (I do not know if she was related to his mother or not) on March 20, 1889 in Lexington (Fayette County) Kentucky. I have never seen a picture of him but I understand that is where my red hair (well, it used to be red, now it is sprinkled with white) came from. I would love to find his siblings but he just will not cooperate. Did every Armstrong have at least one John and one James just to confuse us? Let me know where we are so that I can catch up. Is the music playing/ I am ready to dance on the tables. Grace

    3. A's partyers I'm going out for a brief walk. I'd take a run as I did last time, but have had a heel problem and have to wait awhile before I can do that. just want to take a walk around and see the sights, if you know what I mean. When I get back how about revving up the music and maybe a dance or two? Okay, who's table dancing? 1. [ARMSTRONG-L] Par-tee, par-tee, Ben's place
    2. gary & jill johnston
    3. Ben, Do you and Bob always throw parties together? What a nice way to shrink Houston. I didn't really want to come to Houston, but when I learned that your wife is from Germany, I decided to make the sacrifice. (I can't believe I actually SAID that... must be Edie's fruit talking.) Your deep fried turkey smells.... Well, it just smells. (Now I KNOW that's Edie's fruit!) 'Woodsy' is the word I was looking for. Your turkey smells woodsy. But where I was brought up, we always reserved Forest Spice for the male members of our HUMAN family. For after shaving. Did this turkey shave?!? But seriously, I'd love some of the dark meat, please. And another round of raspberry iced tea? I'm looking for a recipe for Bienenstich. As I recall, it is similar to cinnimon rolls. Could your wife help me out here? Vielen Dank! On the subject of travel, I've never been to Germany, though I have a German born uncle, Wolfgang. I took several years of German lang. in school, but remember little now, unfortunately. You know what they say: use it or lose it. My question is this: if that's true for language, etc., why isn't it also true for FAT? I haven't used all this fat for years, but I still have it. Goodness knows, I've TRIED to lose it. So what's up with that?! I lived and taught in the Marshall Islands for a couple of years in the 1980s. Our housing was on Majuro Atoll. We lived on Small Island, a name that was true. At high tide, a person with a strong arm could throw a rock from ocean side to lagoon side and make a splash. The main road was 35 miles long, period. I loved it, but a lot of people said the idea of being on such a small piece of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean made them nervous. I guess what I really loved was the people. Returning stateside was very traumatic for me; I cried daily for 5 months. The first time I went into a Fred Meyer store, I was so overwhelmed by the huge amount of stuff and the incredible variety with each category that I stood there and cried. I felt like I'd left my life behind. We moved back to a place we'd never lived and I still FELT in Marshallese culture. I was really between a rock and a hard place- not Marshallese, but not really a mainlander either. Reverse culture shock. It's hard to describe to someone who hasn't experienced it. I was able to travel to Kwajalein Island ('Paradise of the Pacific') and then 3 miles on to Ebeye ('Slum of the Pacific')- I still get furious about the outrageous disparity in living conditions. Kwaj was like a golf course and its groceries had fresh produce from the U.S. Ebeye, whose residents were employed at Kwaj, had empty shelves and a little rotting (yes, rotting) produce. It was over crowded and truly a slum. A water barge brought fresh water over from Kwaj every 2nd or 3rd day, as I recall. The good news is that Ebeye now has a water desalinization plant. I hope there have been other upgrades as well. I also traveled to the outer island of Mili. It was beautiful, with sand so white that at night you could didn't need a light to see the paths. I saw men weaving palm frond walls for a cabin. There were still many reminders of WW II there, not the least of which were the bomb craters. Some of them were put to good use growing taro. Because taro likes mucky soil, it was planted in the craters; when the tide came in, fresh water from underground was forced into the low spots. When the tide receded, the water seeped out, leaving the wet soil. One day as I walked along the ocean shore, I picked some beautiful 'hairy' looking pink flowers. I took them back and placed them on the table. Later, I saw that they'd been thrown out into the brush. I asked what happened to the flowers. I was told that those 'flowers' were poisonous and that they were used to poison fish with! Live and learn. :-) Well, hope I haven't kept you away from your other guests too long. I've sure enjoyed the visit! Got to make a quick trip up to Vicki's. Jill

    3. Hey Armstrong Cousins! Is it time to party or what! Sorry to be so late getting on, but I have been doing some studying on basic electricity. Like how to wire up an electrocution. Or maybe just to jump start the party. Nearly 5PM in the east and only 16 messages? Doesn't sound like anyone has woken up yet. What happened? Is everybody drinking already. Pour me a Sam Adams to start with and I'll get out my dulcimer and tune up. I can't party too long though, as I am going to see Blythe Spirit toninght at Penobscot Theatre. Ben Barr, Jr. "Marilyn R. 1. [ARMSTRONG-L] Par-tee, par-tee, Alma's place
    2. gary & jill johnston
    3. Alma, I've never been to Arkansas before. This summer I'll be in the area though; I'm visiting genealogy contacts for my Lloyd, Stepp, and Fowler families. I'm excited to have the chance to see your neck of the woods before then! I think I smell Judy's amaretto cappuccino! Wow! But I'll have to be careful about how I eat-- Edie's fruit, you know. But I can't resist those southern biscuits, fried spuds, and country gravy. A cardiac waiting to happen, but I just can't help myself. I think it's my southern Missouri genes. And you know what they say: you can't fight your jeans. But that's just a big fat lie. I have to fight mine every time I put them on. Anyway, as miraculous as it may sound, I think I hear a blast from that river boat's horn. We'd better hurry. I can hardly wait. I've never seen the big M-I-Dbl before. What? You don't know what the M-I-Dbl is? You know... M -I -Dbl- S- I- Dbl- S- I -Dbl -P -I. Yeah, I figured you knew. It's getting dark. I hear elk blowing their horns, too. They are SO talented! It's just astounding to me that cloven hoofed critters could play bugles! Nature is so wondrous! Well, let's board the boat! ('Scuse me, I'll be right back. Edie's fruit, you know).... Jill

    1. [ARMSTRONG-L] Par-tee, par-tee, Pat's place
    2. gary & jill johnston
    3. Pat, It's been a few years since I was lost and loster in the Tyler area. But I really enjoyed myself. Being lost isn't frightening to me; it's just another opportunity to see more! I've enjoyed seeing the Big Piney Woods again. I stopped at the native reservation and bought a beaded necklace: a red and white woodpecker. It's rather unusual and the meaning, which eludes me at the moment- too much fruit at Edie's- seemed appropriate to who I am, whoever that is. The aroma of fried catfish wafted though the air, and like the scent of chocolate, it benumbed my senses. (No, I don't usually talk like this. I don't know what's going on, but my guess is it's all that fruit I ate at Edie's.) The bluegrass band is really movin'. No, I mean it. They are really moving! They were standing on a red ant trail! I s'pose there's some kind of local remedy for those stings? I know that in the Marshall Islands, it you got stung by a sea urchin, urine was used to take away the sting. Anybody need to p...? That's okay. It probably only works in the tropics. Is that Mema's marching music? It must be... They all have traveling latte' holders! Wonder if I could bum a latte.... Well, I've sure enjoyed the visit. See you soon up in the Pacific NorthWest! Jill __________________ "Gypsy gold does not chink and glitter. It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark." 2. gary & jill johnston
    3. Jan, When the taxi pulled up outside your house, he didn't want to leave! That Mariachi band is great! The Armstrong tartan looks good, but someone should help them adjust the kilts. They've got that hairy thing hanging off their hips! How could they know... The food is rippin'! I love good Mexican food! And Anna's lefse and lingonberry preserves are heavenly! An odd combination, I'll grant you that, but hey, can there ever be a time when lefse doesn't fit right in?!? And it really complimented Kathleen's French Toast Bake. Your patio really handles the crowd well. The Chicken Dancers haven't even bumped into the line dancers! I'm still with the schottish group. Ya just can't get enough schottish into one lifetime, I always say. (Well, actually, I sometimes say that._ Truth be told, this is the first time I've said it. But that doesn't diminish the truth of it.) Thanks for having me. I've got to hurry on over to the Tyler area and see what's shakin' there. Thanks again! 3. Fount, you don't barbeque crab... you boil them... get out your biggest stock pot and fill the bottom with about a gallon of cheap beer, bring it to a boil, then drop the crab in.. Melt some butter... when the crab turn from brown to red, they are done... I shoulda brought some crab shell crackers, but pliers work good... hope you got a few pair of pliers in your shop to use... Maybe some kind sould could raid a KMart and get a few extra pair.. we'll need em..! I dived into WHAT kind of salad... and I promised my wife I wouldn't do any thing to embarrass her at this party!!! Just goes to show you that you can take the Sailor out of the Sea, but you can't take the party out of the Sailor...! No I'm sorry I don't know any Jeanie Mykland or Steve... We've only lived here in Wasilla for 3 yrs now... Before that we lived in Homer... the Hamlet by the Sea... or if you read the stuff TomBodett wrote, it was "The End of The Road"...! now there if I didn't know their name, I knew them by the name of their Boat..! 1. [ARMSTRONG-L] Par-tee, par-tee, Edie's place
    2. gary & jill johnston
    3. Some welcome, Edie... I though I'd never make it. Have you ever ridden a kangaroo? Well, have you?!? It's not pretty. But enough unpleasantries. Those plums are absolutely delish! So are the apples and nectarines! But you might have warned me about not eating too many... I might be making some unscheduled trips to the loo... I'm sure you are gracious enough to ignore them. I tried to prune some of those fruit trees for you, but I think my eyes were still bobbling from the K-ride, so if you'd just be good enough to overlook the slashes and breaks... I'd appreciate it. I saw Rob wandering out in the fields with some other band members... they were playing an original medley: 'Here, We Go Looby Loo/Louie, Louie/Chattanooga ChooChoo.' It didn't sound as Scotch as I'd have expected, but actually not a bad sound. The sheep were blaating right along in time. Amazing. Well, I've retired to the barn. Those bales of hay smell sooo good! I almost feel like home! Penny jumped right up in my lap. I think Ruffles sneaked out and ate some plums, too. Hey, don't worry about it, Edie. I'll clean it up. No prob.... Oh fine. I'll be right back. Probably just as well with canceling the cricket game, what with all the plums, etc. It could take a really long time, if you know what I mean. The barn is starting to heat up with all the music and dancing. I love that Scottish Schottish! Let's boogie down!!! Well, I've had a wonderful time! (Ooops, please excuse me a moment... I'll be right back.) As I was saying, I've got to get while the gettin's good. Thanks again! Jill

    3. Grace, Fancy you mentioned Fayette Co Ky... although I didn't have any Armstrong relatives there (that we know of)(Yet)... my Naylors and Cormans (Kornmans) were there at the beginning of the 19tyh century.. See that, already I've only had one glass of Charlies Single Malt, and the keyboard is acting up...!!! My Armstrong's didn't arrive in the US until 1846... I've learned a lot about them after they got "here", but sure wish I could learn a little more about them when they lived in Ireland and Scotland..!! Well, not every generation had a James... but every generation I've ever looked at had a few John's and even More Williams...! It's the Hugh's that I'd like to find..!!! 3. Ha ha, Mary. You gotta spell Armstrong right or the message bounces back, huh? Glad you are partying with us! And also everybody else. Sounds as though we are going to be very busy having fun with everybody. I went to Edie's first and she wasn't home. I was dressed in my party jeans and even though I knocked, wanting that diet salad for a starter, nobody answered. Think Edie was still asleep. Now I am headed over to the west coast to see to see cousin Jill in Washington state. I am going to pet her horses, eat her cookies and then I am going to try her chicken dish and anything else she will give me to eat and drink. Whoopee! John D. will probably be there since he doesn't live as far away from there as he does to some places! Oh, yes, we said we would end up at Doreen's in Scotland. 3. Chuck, Great place! But I must say I didn't feel too welcomed when I put the inner tube in the water like you said. As I was paddling away, your neighbors started yelling and gesturing. They seemed to be pointing to a SUV tire lying nearby. I don't know what all the fuss was about. I PROMISED to bring the tube back. I just needed a little bigger size than the regular car ones. I guess they finally decided it was no big deal, though; they signaled me that I was 'number 1' in their book! Whew! Glad I didn't cause any trouble for you. This is my first trip to Padre Island. It reminds me a little of the Marshall Islands- tropical plants, lots of ocean, and humid. I worked up a sweat paddling around, so I'm ready for refreshments. I'll pass on those drinks you're mixing up- they smell scary to me, but then so do those cubanos (!)- so I'll just have a raspberry iced tea, if you don't mind. The music is great! I've never seen such a diverse group: bass, guitar, accordion (I'm wailin'!), bagpipes, dulcimer, banjo... only in ArmstrongLand! And the dancing is not to be believed! I've seen the Hokey Pokey, but I mean THIS was the HOKEY Pokey! I didn't know anyone could actually put their belly button in and out like that! By the way, maybe Vicki, Patti, and I should bring our single sons out your way. Maybe the reason they haven't got married yet is they don't realize that there really is a place where the Chicken Dance is THE dance of choice at weddings! And before I forget, who are the Armstrong matchmakers? Thanks for having me! I've had a blast! :-) I've gotta be movin' along-- before your neighbors show up. Somehow I don't think I want to get up close and personal with them. No offense. Jill

Edie are you up yet, or do we FINISH with you. I am about to make a frittata with zucchini and yellow squash and sauteed Vidalia onions. Dad likes it with a little salsa--made up from Emeril's recipes online with tomato, green olives, lime juice and diced Italian tomatoes. Perks up the tastebuds. 3. Great party as usual. I have been enjoying all you party goers for the past 4 1/2 years. I love this time of the year. 3. Well, John D., I was wondering where you were! Now we know you were just "blowing in the wind." Glad you didn't blow away and glad you didn't have too much damage. That was some windy day! It's good that nobody got killed! Sounds like worse than a hurricane. It is still winter here, still snowing off and on. I swear we got your weather this year. Official spring is only a few days away (8 pm. on March 20) and here we looking like January! Some years we might have some crocus flowers blooming by now but we still have at least 2' of snow out on the lawn. Whine! Whine! I am sick of it. Glad you are partying with us. You know I have been longing to try your rhubarb and your raspberry wines, so won't you please bring a bottle or two to the party so I can sample them? I understand you can dance the sailors' hornpipe on the table top. Looking forward to that. Cousin Marilyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "John D. 3. OK!!!! I am ready to party!!!! The King Crabs just arrived from Alaska! I have some racks of ribs smoking with my special rub on them and have some hot crawfish just out of the vat and covered with hot sprinkles!!! I also have my CC and Diet Dew that I'm sipping on. For the ladies, I have my special 180 proof from NC. It is made from the following recipe: One quart of uncut moonshine. Put three large purple plums, one package of Surejell and one cup of sugar in the quart of booze. let set for 6 months. A bit sooner if you can't wait. Serve it in one ounce glasses and PLEASE ladies, just sip on it. Soon you will feel a flush on your face as if you turned on a sun lamp. Don't worry, this is natural and just shows the mixture is high octane! Also, we have a perminate band stand set up at one end of the living room. Musicans are already showing up and the music is starting. Guess what! It's everyone's favorite music! My word! Is that some Armstrong lass upon a table dancing??? I'll not tell!!!! 3. Hey, I'm ready! I'm getting off the plane and don't know which way to go! Where's my horse?! EDIE! Help! I wanted to play cricket! Don't let them start w/o me, okay? And, BTW, I can no longer throw overhand- got an uncooperative shoulder. Is there such a thing as a pinch batter? Or maybe just a pincher? I think I could just sneak around pinching cousins.... :-) And who's going to help me play bag pipes? (I know... it's ALL about me.) Seriously, if I miss everything else, I do want to try some of your delicious salads! Could you set aside a plate, please? See ya soon? Jill __________________ "Gypsy gold does not chink and glitter.
