    3. I think I probably knew about Peru and potatoes somewhere along the line but had forgotten where they originated and most associate them with Ireland during the Potato famine. At any rate they are not like the originals as they have been hybridized many times over... unlike most rhubarb. 3. Lori, is there a Rootsweb list for Ontario? Just wondering... Can you find more information about Christopher Bell? Were there any children? It's too bad the brothers had such common Armstrong names...that makes it more difficult. I have those same names in my ggrandfather's family, too. Good luck...sounds like a tough puzzle. The boys could have been adopted. You didn't say how old they were when they came. I think you need to find out what kind of records are available to the public and work back from Mary to try to find the boys. 3. There is a book entitled something like "Ontario Marriage Registries" which lists marriages from local parish records prior to the establishment of a BDM Registry for Ontario. Try contacting the Ontario Genealogical Society... OGS. Look on the web. They have researchers who might be able to help. Also, Lambton Co., Ontario is in Southwestern Ontario. Many folks tended to migrate from there toward Michigan.... Hope this helps. 3. Absolutely. Halifax was the premier port in British North America during and following the American Revolution. It was one of the British Navy's strong points. However, it is located on the east coast of Nova Scotia. There is limited land available in Nova Scotia itself, and it was largely taken up by the Loyalists early on. Thus, most emigrants tended toward St. John and Quebec. By the way, the term "the Maritimes" refers to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Newfoundland and Labrador are considered separately. French Acadia included present day Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, and parts of Maine and Quebec. 3. Wow, you can find out a lot about almost anything if you Google for it. When potatoes are exposed to light, chlorophyll forms, as with most plants, and turns them green. Usually the green doesn't extend far past the skin. In addition to the green color potatoes also develop solanine which can be poisonous if one eats an awful lot of green potatoes; however, if one is allergic to solanine it can make them very sick. (This is pretty uncommon.) In other words you might have to eat 10 pounds of green potatoes to get really sick. A strong allergic reaction could possibly result in a miscarriage or early labor, I suppose...why not, stranger things have happened. But for most people just peeling off the green part before cooking takes care of the problem. Markets usually remove potatoes that are green or turning green as people won't buy them. Lots of info about this if you go to www.google.com and put "green potatoes" in the searchbox. Since it originated as a song about smallpox (or something equally horrible) I'm happy we don't hear it any more. Since this was the first child I know of, he and wife Eliza Jane MacAteer came into Canada sometime before that. But maybe they met and married in Canada. I don't know. I found a female Mater (that's the way they pronounce it) in the census, unmarried and living with other people. {probably a servant) Never expected to look for this family on the A list..
