WHAT: "George Washington, A Standing Miracle" one-man-show with Josh Morriss III WHEN: noon Thursday WHERE: Regional Arts Center, Texarkana, Texas CONTACT: Lone Star Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution invites the community to attend; catered lunch is $6 He was the father of our country, but had no children of his own. He was a soldier of courage as a general who won the Revolution, but he was a man of peace. He loved books and music yet was a practical farmer, landscaper and surveyor. He was one of the country's greatest men, our first president George Washington. The Lone Star Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution hosts a program for the community called "George Washington, A Standing Miracle" given by Josh Morriss III. "The script is historically accurate, taken from writings of the times in a large measure," Morriss said. "All third-party quotes are accurate. This is not just a script, it is a research paper with footnotes. The language has been changed only slightly to make it understandable to a modern audience, but all opinions expressed are Washington's." Morriss will appear in full costume with a white wig, although he said he has the white hair anyway, but his style is different. The set is minimal: a desk and a chair with candle and props. "The phrase "A Standing Miracle' comes from a letter Washington wrote that said, "The Divine interventions in the creation of this country has been little short of a standing miracle,'" Morriss said. The one-man show lasts about 40 to 45 minutes and explains why Washington felt God had a hand in founding the country. "When I play Washington, I am no longer Josh, I am Washington," Morriss said. "I'm not putting on a show as myself, I try to become the president and remove the fourth wall between him and the audience and maintain the distance between him and me." The Lone Star Chapter joins a nationwide celebration of the bicentennial of Washington's death being saluted by all of the DAR organizations across the country. This man who lived 200 years ago was honored in his own time and has kept the country's highest respect for all the years since. "Light Horse Harry" Lee gave him the familiar praise, "A citizen, first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen." Thomas Jefferson said of him, "And it may truly be said, that never did nature and fortune combine more perfectly to make a man great ..." And John Adams said: "His example is complete; and it will teach wisdom and virtue to magistrates, citizens and men, not only in the present age, but in future generations."
A number of Native Americans made their home for years in this area, leaving artifacts that have created an interest in Indian life and culture in Texarkana. In conjunction with October's designation as Native American History Month, the Texarkana Museums System is presenting two lectures from the Arkansas Archaeological Survey on the culture and artifacts of the Caddo Indians. Dr. Frank Schambach will speak on "The Bow Wood Traders" from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ace of Clubs Carriage House, 420 Pine St. Dr. Schambach will describe the Caddo culture of the Red River Valley with an emphasis on the "Sander's Site" trading activities. He will show slides with the discussion. "The trading post known as Sander's Site was north of Texarkana," said Amy Wilkinson, TMS education director. "He will talk about the trade that went on between the Indians for bows made from bois d'arc trees known as Osage bows." Dr. David Jeane will present another lecture on Native American cultures from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Carriage House. Speaking on "Artifact Identification," Dr. Jeane will look at artifacts that have been discovered or collected and will answer questions about them. Admission to both lectures is free to members and $3 for nonmembers. The Texarkana Historical Museum, one of the three museums of the Texarkana Museums System, holds a permanent exhibit of the early Native Americans from the region. The exhibit is open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Schools and other groups are invited to schedule special tours of the museum. Admission for adults is $2. To schedule a group tour, call the Texarkana Museums System at (903) 793-4831.

I am trying to find information about a murder in Texarkana in the late 1800. Two brothers were supposedly in a card game and were murdered and thrown in a well. The story is they had gold and were murdered for it. There was a big trial. these men were my brother-in-laws uncles. They were Thomas and Robert Elliott. Wanda
Hi All: Do any of you know the towns along the Arkansas River from Fort Smith to the Mississippi River that actually are on the river. I will be making the trip by boat in the very near futhre and need to know these towns in order to plan my trip. Some of the towns are obvious bur others are not. I need to know towns that are in easy walking distance from where a boat can be tied up. I realize this is not necessarily genealogically related but this river trip will afford me the opportunity to trace the migration up the river as well as the history of settlements along it. Thanks in advance for your time and consideration. Bill Covey Creator of Ol' Tubby Joe Stottlemeyer Author of: Watson Is Where It Wuz http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Station/3265/Welcome.html

I answered previously that I thought 1866 may have been the first year after the Civil War that ex-slaves could be married. Actually, the first year was probably 1865. There is a book called "From Slavery to Uncertain Freedom, The Freedman's Bureau in Arkansas, 1865-1869" which can provide you with some perspective on this period. Here is a website with information on the Freedmen's Bureau plus some of its records which are online. http://freedmensbureau.com/ M. Gillette
Hello list, has anyone out there ever heard of "The Marriage Tree" or "The Marrying Tree" in Miller Co.? Family legend says that my grandparents were married at such a spot. They were married in 1928. I was hoping for a little bit of history to go with the marriage date. It sounds like it could be a really interesting story. By the way I'm researching: William Lavader GLOVER, b. 1905, Palo Pinto Co., TX, son of John Elbert and Corah Mae (HARRINGTON) GLOVER who married Maggie Elizabeth BROWN, b. 1905, Miller Co., AR, daughter of Charlie Henderson and Minnie Belle (BETTERTON) BROWN. I would love to hear from anyone else researching these lines. Thanks for your time, Kay
Does anyone know about the Circuit Preacher, or whoever ?? , that went around and performed marriages out in the country back in the 1860's? I am transcribing the "marriages found in deed record book L", Circuit Clerks Office, many of the dates are the same, or close dated. I would love to get some history to go with these marriages. Vicki (reply back to the list please)
