Rondo was settled about 1835. The first records show that a two-story building of handplaned lumber and shingles was built in 1861 at the church's present location. Although the church was Methodist, people of all faiths worshipped there. The building was also used as a school and Masonic lodge. The Rondo Methodist Church was organized in 1895, and the Rev. Whitesides was the first preacher. Members decided to build a new structure in 1937 and move the old building across the street. However, the old sanctuary burned the night before it was to be moved. Its bell, made of Mexican silver dollars, was never found and was believed to have melted in the fire. The new church was completed in 1939 because of the work of the Women's Missionary Society. In 1953, an annex was added for Sunday school and a new kitchen was added. The current fellowship hall was completed in 1993. The sanctuary was renovated and enlarged in 1999, and a steeple with electronic bells was added-the first steeple since the original one was destroyed in 1937. http://www.texarkanagazette.com/display/inn_news/news07.txt © VHR
Seeking information about Caesar Abraham who worked for James Deas Blanton 1868-1869 in Miller County, AR and subsequently owned his own land in Miller County. Sharon
Seeking any information about the living descendants of Richard Blanton of Spring Bank (Miller County) AR. I am specifically interested in James Deas Blanton, who died in 1902. His son Kelly died in 1952 and later that year his son Kelly Jr. died leaving two small children. Kelly's daughter married in 1964 ending the Blanton line.
I am searching for information on my family in AR. My grandmother was born in Fouke to John Flint SHEETS and a woman by the last name of MCCLURE or MCKENSIE? My grandmother's name was Hadgie Amby SHEETS. I believe there are some ancestors buried at the Macedonia Cemetery. My grandmother, Hadgie, also may have had aunts named America and Armindy (MCCLURE or MCKENSIE). I tried ordering my grandmother's bird certificate, but they only had them starting in 1914. She was born 01 Jan 1911. There is also someone by the name of Wally that is related somehow. Thanks, Shirley (Oligney) Baker Waco, TX

Posted on: Miller County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ar/Miller/154 Surname: PRUITT, RAMSEY, HENDREN ------------------------- Linda, The newspaper more than likely would have been the TEXARKANA GAZETTE as it published obits and news items for many of those small Miller County towns like Boyd, Fouke, Fairland and Independence. The deed records should be at the Texarkana, ARKANSAS court house, the county seat. Do you know if your Great-grandmother RACHEL RAMSEY had a brother named (Edward or Edmond) ED RAMSEY that married PARALEE HENDREN (1875-1948) at Fouke on 11-12-1898? Uncle Ed was born in 1874 and died in 1934 at Fouke, Arkansas where he and Aunt Paralee had lived throughout their marriage. I am descended from Aunt Paralee's sister, ELIZA ANN HENDREN SANDERS (1869-1969), my grandmother, who also lived at Fouke ~ well, actually closer to Independence and Fairland. The Hendrens had moved to the area from near Langston, Jackson County, Alabama around 1893-5. Believe they had known some of the Ramseys in Alabama too.
Linda Miles - The Southwestern Arkansas Death Index 1914-1923 by Desmond Walls Allen lists a death date on J. W. PRUETTE in Miller Co as 10/09/1918. The Texarkana newspapers are on microfilm at the Texarkana College Library and they also have them on microfiche at the Texarkana Gazette. I will be going in to one or both places next week. I will be happy to look for an obit and article for you. Will be in touch. Doris
Posted on: Miller County Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ar/Miller?read=151 Surname: PRUITT, RAMSEY ------------------------- My g-g/f James William "Jim" PRUITT supposedly owned a small sawmill in Boyd, Miller County. In 1918 a chain broke allowing the logs to fall off of the wagon and the wheel of the wagon ran over g-g/f Jim's chest; he died shortly thereafter of pneumonia. Surely his accident/death made the NEWSPAPERS...? Can anyone tell me what newspapers were in Miller County in 1918? Are they on microfilm anywhere? Where would I look to find deed records, etc for this sawmill? G-g/f Jim was married to Rachel Elizabeth "Lizzie" RAMSEY before 1886 and they had 12 chn. Although they moved around bewtween Texas, Ark, and Oklahoma a lot, many of their chn made their homes in Boyd or Fouke, Miller County. ANY help would be deeply appreciated as I am very new at family research. Thanks a lot, Linda [Gore] Miles

Does anyone on this list have access to the 1900 Arkansas Soundex that could look for my James F. Dickert? His wife's name was Cora and he had two small sons, James Dale, age 5 and E. Vernon age 1. Also had a daughter Mattie F. who married John Potter ( don't know where) They moved from DeKalb County, AL between 1880 and 1895 or so. James is reported to have died in Arkansas and his wife and boys returned to DeKalb County by 1920. I do not have a clue as to what county they were in but it might be Miller as I have other relatives that moved there from DeKalb. My library does not have the Arkansas soundex reels. Appreicate any help. Thanks. Roseanne

Miller County Treasurer Imogene West dies Miller County Treasurer Imogene West died Monday after a lengthy illness. West, who served in the treasurer's office for 16 years, will be remembered by friends and family as a kind and dedicated person who worked tirelessly in her job and in her church. West's husband, former Miller County Coroner Harold West, died two weeks ago. Miller County Judge Hubert Easley and co-workers at the courthouse expressed sadness at the loss of West's talents as county treasurer. "It's a tragedy that this has happened," Easley said. "She had serious health problems for quite sometime. She did a great job as one of our constitutional officers." Deputy Treasurer Terry Roberts said he had known West "nearly all of my life." "Not only was she a great treasurer, she was a great friend," said Roberts. "She taught me all of the operations of the Treasurer's Office. She will be dearly missed by Miller County." Maxine Rochelle was a co-worker with West prior to her tenure in the Treasurer's Office. "I worked with her for 40 years at GTE," Rochelle said. "She was a very dear friend, always there for me or for anyone who needed any help. Although she didn't have any children of her own, she always had time to help with other people's children." West was also known for her dedicated involvement in church work at Central Christian Church. The Rev. Mark Irons admired her willingness to assume responsibilities. "She was a trustee when I got here," Irons said. "She was a dogged participant in her Sunday School class and an elder of the church. She was a very committed person, committed to the church and to those around her. Throughout her illness, I found her incredibly determined to care for her husband, Harold. Not everyone takes their responsibilities as seriously as she did. We will miss her." Services for West will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Central Christian Church.
