Hello, Can anyone tell me about the town of Malatia? Is there a way to research from the States? I have just located my husband's paternal grandfather who came from this town. His first name is Napoleon, his father's name I believe was Abraham, and I believe he had a brother named Sarkis. His mother maybe Sara Ahori(?) [can't tell on the marriage certificate if it is a "w", "n", or what. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do hope the List Admin will forgive me, but on a recent trip to Aleppo I gave a presentation on the life of Sir Catchick Paul Chater, an Armenian born in India, who made his life in Hong Kong. For anyone located in Montreal who might be interested in the early Armenian merchants of Julfa I thought I'd post details of an interesting talk that will take place by Sebouh Aslanian, an exceptionally well read and deeply knowledgeable historian on the subject. I'm really sorry I can't be there! Date: Tuesday, 13 April 2010 Time: 15:00 - 17:00 Location: at Morrice Hall, room 017 (Institute of Islamic Studies), McGill University. " 'The Salt in a Merchants Letter': Early Modern Information Networks and the Global Trade of Armenian Merchants from New Julfa." Drawing on a rich trove of documents, including correspondence not seen for 300 years, this study explores the emergence and growth of a remarkable global trade network operated by Armenian silk merchants from a remote outpost in the Persian Empire. Based in New Julfa, Isfahan, in what is now Iran, these merchants operated a network of commercial settlements that stretched from London and Amsterdam to Manila and Acapulco. The New Julfan Armenians were the only Eurasian community that was able to operate simultaneously and successfully in all the major empires of the early modern world- both land-based Asian empires and the emerging sea-borne empires- astonishingly without the benefits of an imperial network and state that accompanied and facilitated European mercantile expansion during the same period. This presentation brings to light for the first time the role of information and commercial correspondence in the long-distance trade of the Julfan Armenians and focuses on commercial letters written by Julfan merchants working in the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean regions. It argues that information sharing was important not only for the daily commercial affairs of merchants but also for maintaining the integrity of the Julfan trade network. Dear Liz, Thanks for your interesting email. I have been checking out my Word Docs again tonight and will forward to you in next couple of days... Just for now...Sincerely in searching... Thelma Birrell
Dear Liz, I am proud of what you have done regarding the research for Armenians. I would be happy to support your cause, but there is nothing I can see for me..... I did email you a long time ago, I think. Strangely enough, I bought a death certificate for John Andrew Sarkies or Andrew John Sarkies and thought I was done. Then a lady phoned me from Melbourne, telling me that the one certificate I bought was her family. So, of course,. I let that one go. I see you do have a name Andrew S. Sarkies [Singapore] which obviously belongs to someone. That certificate said his mother was Shahanoon ? Although he was born in Armenia, by his offspring's birth certificates, his name could be anything, as being a general Merchant in Melbourne, he could have used an anglo-saxon or biblical name. Then as my John or Andrew was in Melbourne it makes it hard to pin him down. He did go with his wife Helen McKay to Scotland in 1878, but never returned with her and the children in 1883. My grandmother Grace Jago Sarkies was born there in Scotland in 1880. I have a well researched Word Document about her and J.A.Sarkies if you would like me to share it with you I would be happy to do so. Hi Thelma Thank you for your kind words. I would be grateful for anything that is Armenian related, no matter how small. It's amazing how things come together with just one small addition - and you never know, your Word document may just shed some light on a bigger picture. If you are happy to share it with me, I would be very grateful. Best wishes Liz Researching Chater or Armenians in India and Hong Kong in 2010? Please go to www.chater-genealogy.com.
For those with Armenian interests I have uploaded onto my website the following: A list of Armenians buried in Australia [relevant to the India List as some Armenians migrated from India and settled there] A List of Armenians (and some other names) noted from Bengal Inventories 1780-1861. Extracted from LDS film 2046671, part 8 and Transcribed by Dr. David Atkinson (Thanks Doc!). The Bengal Inventories page is very slow to load, so please be patient. The Inventories will also be on FIBIS website in due course. Best wishes Liz Researching Chater or Armenians in India and Hong Kong in 2010? I have only seen some very old tax registers from the mid to late 1800's from Van. The Mormon church has microfilmed these and they are available via family history centers. There may be other records from Van available in Armenia since after the fall of Van records may have been transported to Echmiadzin. I do not know for sure.
