The battle you mention was probably Stone's River, fought in late December, 1862 about 30 miles southeast of Nashville, and about two and one half miles west of Murfreesboro. There is a National Historical Park there, of some interest. The weather was very cold, and the two opposing generals were W. S Rosecrans (Union) and Braxton Bragg. The battle was pretty much a "tie", until Bragg retreated on January third, 1863. The battle had been ferocious meanwhile, often hand to hand, with Confederate dead/wounded/missing of some 10,000 out of a total of 37,000, and Union casualties of 13 thousand out of 44 thousand.
