If you are looking in Boone or Marion County for an ancestor who disappeared during the war (It would be Marion as Boone was not created until after the war) be sure and check out Missouri. I had a great great uncle who we knew died during the war but we did not know much more. I found him and another cousin in Missouri. They were members of the Schnable's Missouri Guard Calvary. My great great grandfather was corporal in the same unit. So I found 3 members in that unit. My great great grandfather survived but his son William DeShields (William D Shields) did not survive. He died of smallpox in Alton Prison in Alton, Illinois. Anyway, check out these sights for more information on Missouri Confederate http://www.altonweb.com/civilwar contains the database of the soldiers that died at Alto during the Civil War and a short history of the prison also: http://www.missouridivision-scv.org/mounits/schnabelbatcav.htm This gives a list of his units. My family was in company G. Hope this helps someone. I searched for William for 25 years and he is there. Reta DeShields Parton [email protected]
