    3. Hi Stephanie:--Was checking out the queries on the MCAR web page and saw yours (see below). I think I can, again, be of some help to you in your research confusion. With at least six Wood families in MCAR and no county records before Aug 1887, researching this surname can be quite an undertaking. Obediah Wood, the known progenitor of this family, is often given the first name of William. However, research back thru his Revolutionary War records indicates his given name was Obediah, not William. His nickname was "Revolutionary." He was born NC 1758 and died MCAR 1845. The known sons of Obediah "Revolutionary" Wood and his unknown first wife are: William "Dancin' Bill" or "Billy" Wood Sr b 1775 m Hannah Austin; George Wood Sr b 1780 m/1 ___ m/2 Mary ___; John Wood d 1812/14; James "Rosin' the Bow" Wood b 1786 or 1792 m/1 ___ m/2 Elizabeth ___; Benjamin "Cedar Ben" Wood b 1795/8 m Milly Jackson. The known daughters of Obediah "Revolutionary" Wood and his second wife Polly Norton are: Charity Wood b 1820 m John Quincy Adams; Winnie Wood b 1824 m Michael "Mike" Mathis; Mary "Polly" Wood b 1826 m William C Brashears. These three daughters are half-sisters to the sons listed above. Documentation for "Old Johnny" being the nickname of John W "Old "Johnny" Wood, son of William "Dancin' Bill" or "Billy" and Hannah (Austin) Wood, can be found in the manuscripts of Silas Claiborne Turnbo. These manuscripts are online and are searchable. There is a link to them on the MCAR web page. Neither William "Dancin' Bill" or "Billy" Wood nor his wife Hannah (Austin) Wood was killed in the Mountain Meadow Massacre in 1857. "Dancin' Bill" d MCAR at the home of his daughter Winnie in 1865 aged 90. Hannah d MCAR in 1870 before the census was taken. [AR 1870 Mortality Schedule] William Edward Wood, son of George Washington & Nancy Jane (Coker) Wood, and Solomon R Wood, son of George Washington & Nancy Jane (Coker) Wood, are the only descendants of Obediah "Revolutionary" Wood known and proven to have been killed in the Mountain Meadow Massacre. There are several very informative and factual links to this tragic event on the Carroll Co AR web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~arcarroll. Both of these men were nephews of John W "Old Johnny" Wood. The children of William "Dancin' Bill" or "Billy" and Hannah (Austin) Wood are: James A "Jim" Wood b 1800/10 m Redissa "Dicy" Trimble; George Washington Wood b 1805 m Nancy Jane Coker; Elizabeth "Betsy" Wood b 1808 m David Stinnett; John W "Old Johnny" Wood b 1814/5 m Mary Jane Hudson; Solomon M "Bud" Wood b 1818 m Martha "Patsy" Magness; Obediah Wood b 1821 m/1 Susan A Gray m/2 Susan Bushwell m/3 Lulu (Swilling) (Thurl) Coats; Charity Wood b 1823 m James "Limber Jim" Wood. The children of John W "Old Johnny" & Mary Jane (Hudson) Wood are: Thomas B Wood b 1834 m Mary Jane Everett; William Wood b 1835 m ___; John B Wood b 1836 m Nancy Ann Everett; Nancy Elizabeth Wood b 1835 m Frederick Benton "Fed" Talbert Jr; James Wood b 1841/2 d 1863; Lucinda Wood b 1843 m Ezekial W "Zeke" Hampton; Araminta Wood b 1846/7 m John Henry Wood; George Wood b 1850; Obediah Wood b 1853 m/1 Susan Conger m/2 ___; Mary Wood m ___; Jeff Wood. Hope this helps to clear up some of your confusion, Stephanie. Many, many researchers have worked many, many years sorting out this Obediah Wood family. This is about the most up to date, well-documented information available at this point in time. If I can be of further help, please let me know.
