I'm assuming, Patsy, that you've discovered the error the census taker made in this family in the MCAR 1850 census. If not, here's what it says in the transcribed 1850 by Nancy L. Wood. #251-252 Thomas Stephens 22 TN. Union Township. Foster 35 TN. Elisa 28 TN. John S. 15 TN. Thomas 9 TN. George Hudspeth 4 AR. (Note on microfilm: "This family continued on page 47, family 323 having made a mistake in transcribing. J.M.C. This deficiency of 4 [rest unreadable]." Next family # shown on film is 254-255. N. L. W.) #322-323 Henry Stephens 32 M TN. Margaret 20 AR. Isaac 3 AR. Sarah Jane 2 AR. Immediately above this entry, with no dwelling/family number is: Daniel/David Stephens 2 AR. Samuel Stephens 9/12 AR (note on microfilm: page 36, family 252. N. L. W.) Sounds to me as if this may be one of those notorious cases we hear about where one or the other Stephens family didn't directly give the information to the enumerator and someone else "filled in the blanks." Who knows? Looks to me as if Thomas Stephens is the head of household, but his age should be 52, not 22. Apparently his son Foster is a widower with sons John S and Thomas. The husband of his daughter Elisa isn't currently living with them but his grandson George Hudspeth is. Daughter Margaret is still living at home, but is unmarried. Just who David and Samuel belong to, I'm not sure. Although listed as Stephens' they could be Hudspeths. I have access to the Washington Co TN marriage records at the library in Yellville. This might provide a clue or two. Next time I'm there, I'll check and see what I come up with. I can't definitely say whether Davis Hudspeth is related to the other Hudspeths in MCAR or not. It's an extremely complex family to research - almost as if they all hid away now and then just for kicks. I do know there's a George Hudspeth family with 3 unknown sons b TN 1820, 1822, and 1823. One of these might be Davis. Maybe the marriage records will help here. There are no death records anywhere in AR before 1914. The only Stephens I find in "Cemeteries of MCAR" by Marian Burnes are: Water Creek Cemetery: William W 1850-1905. Mary 1851-1935. [probably his wife]. Granvell b/o WW 22 Jan 1832-10 May 1910. Sarah 22 Dec 1837-22 Feb 1925 [probably his wife]. Not being a whole bunch of help, am I? Well, we'll see, huh? His son, Henry, married Margaret Adams daughter of Matthew Adams and Priscilla Catherine Wolf 6-4-1845. Trying to find exact date of Thomas' death and place of burial. I believe Thomas' wife, Margaret Sellers Stevens also died in Marion County shortly after they arrived in the area. Their daughter Eliza Catherine had married Davis Hudspeth before they left TN and found after they arrived in Marion County that he already had a wife and children in TX. Family legend says there was court action on this. Was he related to the other Hudspeth's in Marion County? There was also a son, Foster Stevens, shown on the 1850 census. Haven't been able to find him after that unless he was the brother who went to TX with Henry after Thomas' death and his other name was William or Billie. > > > ============================== > Shop Ancestry - Everything you need to Discover, Preserve & Celebrate > your heritage! > http://shop.myfamily.com/ancestrycatalog >
