Know the building well, Jeana. It obviously was a bank at one time 'cuz there is a big old bank vault in it - way in the back. I'm not real clear on the exact history. It's known as the Layton Building 'cuz when it was completed in 1906 by A S Layton, they moved their store/bank into it from the opposite side of the square. Something tells me I've heard that the entrance to the bank proper was around the corner on Old Main - but don't quote me on this. "Church On The Rock" is in the building next door to it. There's quite a blurb about it in "History of Marion Co" by Earl Berry. Bobby Joe Baker and the gal who owned Silver Creek Land Co (in the Layton Building) got it on the AR List of Historic Places several years ago. He's owner of Baker Company catty-corner across Old Main from the Layton Building. 870-449-4241. I'm not sure whether he's online or not. Probably, but you never know with Bob. He could probably tell you more about it than anyone else around. Hope this helps, Jeana.
