    1. RE: Schnables Company G - Yellville, Ark

    3. Hi Reta! Concerning when this battalion was formed and when it was surrendered, here is what my principal reference on Confederate units has to say: From 'Compendium of the Confederate Armies - Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, The Confederate Units and the Indian Units' by Stewart Sifakis: Schnable's Missouri Cavalry Battalion Organization: Organized with six companies in the summer of 1864. Probably surrendered at Yellville, Arkansas in May or June 1865. First Commander: John A. Schnable (Lieutenant Colonel) Assignment: Jackman's Brigade, Shelby's Division, Army of Missouri, Trans-Mississippi Department (August-December 1864) Battle: Price's Missouri Raid (August-October 1864) So it appears that Schnable's Battalion was formed late in the war during the period when every man and horse available was being scraped together for Price's Raid. The first order of business after organizing the battalion was to ride to Pocahontas, Arkansas because that is where General Price collected his troops and started north from. Given the rather short interval between their enlistment, and the beginning of the Raid in September, I imagine that the troopers in the battalion were rather sketchily trained in their duties, were most probably riding their own horses and did not have uniforms. The weapons of choice would have been revolvers (If available - they were in short supply and the ones manufactured in Texas during the war were of indifferent quality. Since the Mississippi River was in Federal hands by this time, no weapons or supplies of any kind were available from east of the Mississippi.) and perhaps sabers. However, it was becoming clear by this stage of the war that while sabers looked fierce, they weren't of much use in a typical skirmish. Given the overall supply situation in Arkansas by this time, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that Schnable's Battalion may have been armed mostly with muzzle-loading shotguns brought from home. Comparable cavalry units in the Federal army were typically armed with repeating carbines by this stage of the war. Can you confirm whether my great-great-great-grandfather, Jesse William Meachum, born 1824 in Virginia and resident of Dubuque (extinct community now under Bull Shoals Lake near Lead Hill), was a member of the Rangers Company of Schnable's Missouri Cavalry Battalion? Any additional details concerning his service would also be useful to me. I've been told that he was in that outfit but have never had access to a roster or other information that could confirm it. I would also be interested in whether or not a William Meachum, born 2 Apr 1818 in Virginia, and resident of Independence County may have served with Col. Schnable. I have theorized that he may be a brother or cousin of Jesse William, but have never had any indication as to the truth of that speculation. -- Robert W. Through Various internet sights and other research I believe Most of the men from this company came from the Sugar Loaf area to Yellville Area. Corporal H. DeSHIELDS (HANDY) and WILLIAM D (also B) SHIELDS (WILLIAM DeSHIELDS) were members of Company G under Schnables Missouri State Guard. WILLIAM was captured 12/23/1864 in Marion County, Arkansas and died 4/20/1865 in Alton Prison, Alton, Illinois of Smallpox. GOSHEN JONES, private, was captured 10/28/1864 in Searcy, Arkansas and died 12/31/1864 in Alton Prison, Alton Illinois of Rubella. Other divisions of SCHNABLES troops also came from the Yellville/Lead Hill (now) area. The following men were members of Schnable's Company G CSA. William Chapman = Captain Charles Brownlee = 2nd Lt James D String = Jr 2nd Lt H DeShields = Corporal W C Daniel = 1st Sgt Privates were: James R Beckley/Buckley J J Benton B F Briggs John Bruce (mentioned in Turnbo Tales) I N Campbell W A Campbell J T Cavana Nelson Chapman A Daniel Thomas Wilson Dickerson/Dickinson J Dunlap J Durham S C Durham J A Gimlin A Green (Possibly Avery - Delores - was Avery in Company G?) John Hurst J M Hutson W H Hutson Aaron P Jackson Anton P Jackson (may be the same as above) Goshen Jones (mentioned above) W Nave James Osburn H L Parrish W E Shelton William B/D Shields (William DeShields mentioned above) Sam M Thompson Henry Wilson G W Wiltmath (believe to be Wilmoth) Napoleon B Tibbetts/Tibbitts If anyone has information on these men, I am trying to put information together on this company. I already have quite a bit of information and would like to correspond with others who have relatives in this company. Handy and William's military papers say they enlisted in Yellville, but no date. Does anyone know when this troup was created? The information I gather on this will be posted on our Rock Fence Genealogy site for all to be able to obtain. address: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jmwtlw/index.htm You can also access this site through the Marion County and Boone County pages.
