    3. Hi Reta! Talk about your coincidences. The message below popped up in the Izard County mailing list this morning. It gives a good deal of information about LtCol Schnabel including the fact that he surrendered his battalion at Jacksonport on 11 May 1865. -- Robert W. King I'm an ingenieur, NOT a bloody locomotive driver! Jim and Wanda ---------------------------- BIOGRAPHY of JOHN ADAMS SCHNABEL John A. Schnabel was born in Virginia, 11, June 1817 and d. 11, March 1901, Arkansas, of German descent. A brilliant German architect and engineer, he designed and constructed many of the water grist mills in North Arkansas, as well as the J acksonport Courthouse (where ironically the Arkansas troops of the Civil War would surrender.) Civil War - Confederate Enlisted at Yellville, Arkansas, age forty-six yrs., blue eyes, light hair, dark complexion, height six feet and one inch. Was a Lieutenant Colonel. J.A. Schnabel, Co., T S, Schnabel's Battalion Missouri Cavalry. Third Regt. Inf. 7th. Div. Mo., State Guards, J.A. Schnabel, Commanding. Confederate - Schnabel's Battalion Cav. Lt. Col., Schnabel's Battalion. Name appears as a signature to a Parole of Prisoners of War belonging to the Army of the Northern Sub.-District of Arkansas, and surrendered on the 11th day of May, 1865, by Brig. Gen'l M. Jeff. Thompson commanding said Army, to Major Gen'l G.M. Dodge, commanding the Department of the Missouri. Lt. Col. Schnabel's Batt'n, Calvary. Appears on a Muster and Descriptive Roll of prisoners of war belonging to the Army of the Northern Sub-District of Arkansas, and surrendered on the 11th day of May, 1865, by Brigadier General M. Jeff Thompson, C.S.A., commanding said Army, to General G.M. Dodge, U.S.A., commanding Department of the Missouri. Paroled at Jacksonport, Arkansas, June 5, 1865 Col. Schnabel built the Spring Mill Dam in 1869. The Batesville Guard, pub. at Batesville, Arkansas, May 15, 1956, p. 2, Vol. IXXX, No. 99. See clipping #6,1279. Near Cushman, Arkansas, Independence County, a spring was dammed, forming a pool large enough to be called a small lake. It was called Spring Mill Dam. The water provides power for Spring Mill. A later frame addition almost hides the original mill structure, made of hand- hewed logs fastened with wooden square nails. Almost all of the equipment stands just as it was fashioned, the wheel, out of sight under the floor, the shafts and gears that transmit the power, and the wooden crane used to lift the heavy stone burrs out for sharpening. About the time the mill was built, considerable wheat was grown in this part. Harvesting was done with scythes, and rack-like attachments called "cradles" caught the wheat as it was mowed. The old cedar worm-drive and casting used in bolting the crushed wheat still hang across the rafters. J .A. Schnabel, builder of Salado Bridge. Gazette-Sun. Mag., June 16,1957. Article by Anthony Leone on Salado Bridge, gives sketch of Schnabel. Schnabel represented Jackson Co., in legislature twice. Clipping of Leone article -file under Salado Bridge. Near Batesville, Arkansas, the Salado Creek Bridge was an im-pressive example of stone masonry. The graceful double arch bridge was in use from 1870 to 1939. - J.A. Schnabel and his wife Sarah E. Schnabel, b. 4, July 1836, d. 10, March 1901, dau. of John I. F. and Elizabeth Chinn, are buried in the Chinn Cemetery, Independence County, Arkansas, Ashley Twp. between Batesville and Newport, Arkansas. I think maybe J .A. Schnabel is a brother of our Thomas Jefferson Shrable but no definite proof. ---------------------------------- End of document.
