Would appreciate any info on William B. Gibson and his wife Margaret Gibson, they moved from Coffee county TN in 1860 to Marion county AR. To my knowledge they do not show in the 1870 census or on any tax records. Any information on taxes or vital statistics would be appreciated. Margaret Gibson filed for a homestead in Marion County in 1869 and same was approved in 1876 but I can not find any tax info on the property which became a part of Baxter county in 1873. Possibly William died and Margaret was left a widow and taxes were waived. Have not been able to find death information on William B. Gibson. Some family notes say he enlisted in the CSA at Nashville. He was born 1811 so he would have been about 51 years old. Their son William I. Gibson married Cynthia Anne Messick and he enlisted in the CSA in 1862 his records show from Marion County. Another son John K.Gibson married Harriet Frizzell. John Brumley
I'm having a bit of a problem with some of your information, John, because I can't seem to verify it in area records. There is no Gibson surname found in the 1850 MCAR census. In the MCAR 1860 census for Rapps Barrens Township, I find: B A Gibson 24 TN. Rebecca 25 TN. Alexander M 3 TN. John F 1 TN. [This township was removed to Baxter Co AR when it was created in 1873]. There is no Gibson surname found in the 1870 MCAR census. In the Baxter Co AR 1880 census for Whiteville Township, I find: Adam Gibson 34 TN -- --. Sarah E 29 TN TN TN. Ida 8 AR TN TN. William 5 AR TN TN. Rebecca 5/12 (b Jan) AR TN TN. [Whiteville Township was in Marion Co before it was removed to Baxter Co when it was formed in 1873]. In the 1880 MCAR census for Union Township, I find: John S Gibson 34 physician MS AL TN. Laura 17 wife TN TN TN. In "14th AR Confederate Infantry" by Desmond Walls Allen, I find: B A Gipson enlisted in Co I, pvt/pvt, 29 July 1861 at Yellville. Deserted 29 July 1862. In "27th AR Confederate Infantry" by Desmond Walls Allen, I find: John K Gibson enrolled 18 June 1862 Marion Co., aged 23, pvt/pvt, Co. E, deserted 20 Sep 1863. [Several other Gibsons are listed, but they are from Searcy, Carroll, & Newton Co AR] Dowd's Company, Arkansas State Troops CSA lists no Gibson volunteer in MCAR in 1861. [A list of these men can be found at http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar]. In Federal Land Records for MCAR, I find only: Arch H Gibson 160 acres in S11 T19N R15W 13 Aug 1896. [He was b KY 1856]. Johnson Gibson 160 acres in S21 T19N R15W 9 April 1900. [He was b KY 1858]. In "Genealogies of Marion Co AR Families 1811-1900" I find: John Wesley Messick (son of Ruby Catherine Messick, daughter of Elisha Messick) b Coffee Co TN 28 March 1814 d Baxter Co AR 3 Nov 1893 bu Old Messick Cemetery m/1 Celia Wilkerson b Nashville TN 20 Feb 1815 d MCAR 7 Nov 1866; m/2 MCAR 1867 Lydia Chloe (Frazelle) Young (widow of John Thomas Young). Emigrated to MCAR 1858. Cynthia Ann Isabella Messick (daughter of John Wesley & Celia [Wilkerson] Messick) b TN 1852 m John Gibson. There are absolutely no county records for Marion Co AR *before* Aug 1887. No tax, no death, no marriage, no nothing. That's when the courthouse burned to the ground, taking *all* records with it. I'm seriously beginning to think you should probably be looking in TN - possibly Marion Co TN - for some of these people and records. They simply aren't here in the Marion Co AR area. I'd like to suggest that you look in the "TN Census Index" by Accelerated Indexing Systems for the years 1850, 1860, 1870 to see if you can locate these people in TN. And then do the same thing for "AR Census Index" for the years 1860, 1870 to see where they may be in AR. Most larger libraries and genealogical societies have these. Interlibrary Loan is always a possibility too. I wish you luck in your search.
