    1. [ARMar] DeShields - Stiles - Donnell - McKey
    2. On July 4, 1905 or 1907, Sarah Stiles DeShields and one or two of her children drowned when a hard rain started while they were at the Lead Hill Picnic. They started home but when they came to the Raley place, the stream had swollen and several waited to cross. Sarah's husband Seib DeShields (a very strong and capable person) made the decision to cross the stream to get his family out of the weather and before the stream got higher. This was a bad decision. The wagon turned over and Sarah and their child died. I understand the child was a girl and older. Some stories say two children. The problem is, I do not know who the child or children are. I have checked the census records and at this time I cannot determine which child it is. I believe it was a girl. Sarah says she had 9 children and 7 were living in 1900. All 7 are accounted for. I was told by an older relative that a child named Babe was buried beside Sarah. That Babe was retarded but she was not a baby but called Babe. Also it was told Babe was an excellant house keeper. I suspect since she and Sarah was buried together that she is the child. Can anyone help me on this? This is the ones that might be possible: Margaret DeShields married G C Donnell in 1900 Mary E DeShields was said to have married John Richey but I question this She was born in 1880. Cora S DeShields married Lonzo McKey in 1899 I feel it was probably Mary E DeShields who was called Babe. Can anyone help me on this? I suspect one of the local papers wrote something on this as it was a tragedy, but I have not found anything on it. It is just family stories. Would like to correspond with the Donnell and McKey families. Have information to share. Reta
