Karen, That is not a dumb question. I am not sure where you found the information I had posted on the Dawes Roll so I don't know exactly what you know. Generally the Congress of US on 3 Mar 1893 passed a law to dissolve the Indian Nations communal land system and promote individual land ownership. To further this procedure they demanded a new roster "Dawes Roll" in 1898 that included the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Seminole Nations. There were 197 Delaware included in the Cherokee Nation. Indians were sorted by: Blood (Full 6601, Part 29,975) Marriage (286) Minors (sorry I don't know this number) Freedmen (4923) Delawares ( 197 adopted into the Cherokee Nation) The Enrollment period was 1899 - 1906. (Final date for enrollment 4 Mar 1907) ( But to be elgible had to be born by 4 Mar 1906) There were several restrictions, first you had to live in one of the Nations in Oklahoma, and second most had been on previous rolls and used that as evidence of their blood connection. There were 101,211 enrolled on the Dawes Roll that were eligible to receive title to land. Of these 41,785 were Cherokee, including the 197 Delaware. Remember there were many Indians that did not live in Oklahoma during this enrollment time period, so were not eligible, and also there were some Indians that did not want to be enrolled. I hope this answers most of your questions and gives you a starting point. There are several books available that lists all those enrolled, (Amazon.com) is a good place to buy one or maybe you can find some parts on the internet or in your local library.
