    1. [ARMar] Powell, Marion County, AR
    2. Would anyone know why census records show Powell AR as listed in Craighead County up through the 1930 Census? Was there more than one Powell, AR? Thanks!

    3. The federal census records use Townships as subdivisions of Counties. A township is an area determined by population for equality in political representation. There has never been a Powell Township in Marion Co AR. There may be a Powell Township in Craighead Co AR. The town of Powell in Marion Co AR was originally called Stringtown. Somewhere around 1870, for unknown reasons, the name was changed to Powell. A post office was created there in 1888. With the advent of the railroad, the town of Powell was moved to a depot location along the railroad and the name became Pyatt and was incorporated in 1927. The name of the post office was changed to Pyatt in 1904. You can learn more about Powell/Pyatt at http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion which is the Marion Co AR web site.
