Hi list, I want to find out when my grandfather (Bill Pierce) carried the mail in Flippin. He is listed (as a postmaster) in the "History of Marion Co" - but I want more proof than what's in the book. His son-in-law (Woodson Owen) was also a mail carrier. Who would have this kind of record? Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance. Susan

Susan, so far as I've been able to learn, there's no list per se of postmasters nor mail carriers. And I have no idea where the members of the Marion Co History Committee that gathered information for "History of Marion Co" by Earl Berry found their data. Not a single note or file resulting in that book has ever been found. It's my understanding that postmasters are approved/appointed by US Postal Service, but that local mail carriers are the purview of the current postmaster. When I was growing up the US Postal Service was known as the US Post Office Department and was totally supported by the federal government. It was a part of the federal government rather than the separate entity (non-governmental) it is today. The postmaster at the Flippin AR Post Office may be able to help you on this. Another source might be the US Postal Service itself. And another source might be NARA - the National Archives (there is a web site). I know there's a microfilm concerning applications for the creation of post offices, but it doesn't contain lists of PO personnel. It's possible that a letter to be printed in the Mountaineer Echo newspaper whose offices are in Flippin might nudge some local memories (there is a web site). Sorry I can't be more specific for you. If you ever do run across a source for this sort of historical information, the Historic Genealogical Society of Marion Co would be most grateful if you would share it with them.
