    2. Judy Wilming
    3. Hi List: I have finally found a copy of the Dorman/Smith 1995 book on the Claiborne family. In checking quickly, I located one set of my Claiborne great grandparents. I never had Mary Ann Green's parents names. She married John Clayton (1813-1891) and were parents of George Archibald Claiborne. Pg. 91 - John, perhaps died in Fulton Co., AR (still looking for their grave sites). He married 21 Feb 1843 in Lauderdale Co., TN. Mary Ann was the daughter of of Archibald and Judith (Taylor) Green. John Clayton was clerk and master of the chancery Court of Gibson Co., TN in the 1840's and moved to Batesville, AR when appointed Commissioner of Deeds for the State of AR by the Governor of TN (?), was county surveyor of Izard Co., AR 1866-68, and later lived in Fulton Co., AR. Question: Would TN have appointed a position for AR? That me confused. Mysty - do you know? Judy

    3. I'm not Mysty but perhaps I can help. Normally land was advertised by the Federal Government in 40 acre tracts and that was the way the tract books were laid out and that was the way they were set up to be sold at auction. Actually, the question should be - when did the law change that you did NOT have to own property to vote? From the very beginning of the settlement of the US one of the requirements of being able to vote was the ownership of land. That did not change until well into the 1800s. As for the middle initial I would be very careful to prove they are the same person. In my own research, at least, I've never found a man who used a middle initial sometimes and sometimes didn't. I have found that if a man had a middle initial he used it all the time. Odds on burned courthouses? I think most of us have that problem. I seem to recall a reason for this but it escapes me. Also, Thomas uses his middle initial of J., sometimes, but at other times he uses no initial. I don't find him in Rutherford Co., NC as using his middle initial. I also haven't found any record of him owning property in Rutherford Co., NC even though he held office in that state. 3. Sometimes Elder or Brother, but not Doctor that I've ever heard of (except when they had a doctorate degree in theology). I do know that Physician's Credentials were often recorded in books in the county courthouse. You might see if the county you're searching in has anything like this. I'd be inclined to check with researchers rather than folks in the courthouse - they're more likely to have tripped over this sort of out-of-the-ordinary source. You can connect with any county web page from http://www.usgenweb.com. Another thought is that sometimes folks named a son Doctor as a first name rather than a title. General was another given name I've run across several times. Sometimes these stuck and sometimes a middle name or nickname was commonly used instead (I can readily understand why, can't you?). Hope this is of help. 3. I'm not sure this will be of help, Delores, but this is what I've found. The surnames Raines/Rains does not appear in the 1860 Searcy Co. census. Searcy Co. AR 1870 census for Tomahawk Township: #6-6 Richard B. Ranes 21 MS. Louiza J. 21 AL. Nancy A. 1 AL. It's obvious they weren't in the Bruno area during the 1870s and 1880s. Sorry I couldn't find more for you. 3. Pamela, if I had a surname as well as the given names of the folks you're trying to find proof for, I might be able to help. To try to list every person residing in and/or born in the Bruno area over a 15-20-year span (1870s thru mid-1880s) would entail typing several hundred pages. I have access here at home to the 1870, 1880, 1900 census as well as the reconstructed 1890 census, marriage records 1887-1917, cemetery records, "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900" as well as the not-yet-published supplement to this book, "History of Marion Co" and more. If you'll let me know the names, I'll be happy to see what I can do. 3. Pamela, Birth records were not required in Arkansas until about 1914. You may find census records for 1880 that would list these folk in Arkansas and might indicate they were born in AR. If the parents were in the 1870 Arkansas Census, lived in the same place in 1880 and had a child, that may not be documentary evidence, but pretty good circumstantial evidence.
