Afraid, Joan, you wont find any verification of the Harris-Cox marriage in June 1887 because the MCAR courthouse and ALL its contents burned to the ground in August 1887. Unless you find someone with a family bible or some similar record, you'll have to settle for the notice in the Mountain Echo. Death records were not required in AR until Feb 1914. Few were ever kept at the county level and never in MCAR. I've checked "Cemeteries of MCAR" by Marian Burnes, which is the most comprehensive record we have to date, but there's no mention of John Harris. Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you. At the Marion county website, it shows a marriage license issued to Laura Harris, 17 and W S F Cox in the Mt Echo newspaper June 1887 edition. I have not verified this yet. The Cox family moved to Newton county, Richland Creek area. W S F Cox and some of his and Laura's children are buried in the Richland Cemetery. Laura married Nathan Cheek and moved to California. I was looking for a death record of John Harris in Marion county. Thank you for your information. I will contact Sue Thompson. Joan
I also have a John Harris, father of Celia Harris, wife of Joseph Calvin HOGAN in my files if that's of interest to the Harris researcher. According to "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900" published 1997, Thomas Shelte Williams had at least 2 sisters and one brother. The names of their parents are not yet known to the best of my knowledge. Elijah Williams b KY 1795 m/1 ___; m/2 Hannah Ramsey (Adams) Kellough (daughter of James and Phebe [Davis] Adams, widow of John Kellough) b Christian Co. KY 15 Jan 1806 d Baxter Co AR 1885. Miriam Williams b KY 1790/1800 d MCAR 1840/1850 bu Hurst Cemetery m Abram Wood Jr (son of Abram Wood Sr) b KY 1780/1790 d MCAR 1840.1850. Rachel Williams d MCAR 4 Nov 1834 bu Tom Wood Cemetery m 1828/9 William "Snappin" Wood (son of Abram & Eady [Yates] Wood Sr.) b KY 1807 d MCAR 8 Sep 1879 bu Hurst Cemetery. The fact that the Adams family into which the Williams family married came from Hopkins Co KY and environs may provide a clue as to where in KY the Williams family originated. Not sure how close Hopkins is to Christian Co, but it's in the western part of the state so that might provide a clue. Hope this is useful. Pauline, Thomas Shelte Williams was buried in the Hurst/Teagarden Cemetery and I expect that his wife Mary Polly Hurst might have been buried there as well. Many of the stones have been destroyed by farming and neither of them have a stone there now, that I have found. Sorry I do not know who Thomas' sister was. I would like to have that family structure if you have it. We will be having a cemetery working this Saturday 21 and one of the things we plan to do is probe in the ground to see if we might uncover some stones that have been toppled over and just covered up over the years. John Hurst, the gentleman who originally donated the land for the cemetery is buried there but his stone, if he had one, is also missing. The Hurst Family came from Kentucky about 1811 along with the Wood family. I think some of them that came here were also born in Tennessee so I don't know if that just happened on the way or what. Pauline I will put this on the Marion County list and hope that someone can help with your family. On the back of his Tombstone it says: "This work was put up May 1919 by his grandson, J.C. Hawkins". James C. Hawkins would have been my Great Grandfather, I think this is him mentioned on the Tombstone of William Anderson. Because this person was born in 1909, she should appear on the 1910 census. Unfortunately, Katy, I don't have access to the 1910 Marion Co AR (that's where Yellville is) federal census here at home. However, I'd suggest you got to http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion which is the Marion Co web page. There are several lookup volunteers there who might be able to help you. There is also a Queries section. And there's a whole bunch of info that might be of use now - or later. Hi folks! This is embarrassing to admit, but I appear to have lost about four or five months worth of email messages from my Hold folder last night. I still haven't figured out the details of what happened. It appears the folder contents were deleted as I exited my email program. I received no indication of any problem at the time This would all be merely inconvenient and annoying except for the fact that that I then updated my backup copies of my message archive before becoming aware of the loss.. Mind you, I'm a 'belt and suspenders' kind of guy when it comes to maintaining my email archives. I have messages that date back twenty years in that database and I've gone to some lengths to retain them. I keep synchronized working copies of the archive on both my desktop and my laptop machines and I regularly update two complete sets of copies on different hard drives on my desktop machine. In addition, at longer intervals, I write a copy to CD-ROM. In the present instance, I seem to have lost the contents - about 4000 to 5000 messages from my Hold folder. That's the folder where I have been collecting genealogically oriented messages both sent and received from the archive with a view to wading through them one message at a time and acting upon them as needed - updating my genealogical database, corresponding with the sender, updating my address book, what-have-you. We won't discuss the number of man-hours I've expended in the last month wading through my entire database of approximately a hundred thousand messages to identify those messages and move them to the Hold folder for more considered review and action. I can go to my CD-ROM to recover all the more dated messages. The problem is that the CD-ROM was last written in June. That means that all the genealogically oriented messages (naturally the ones I least wanted lose!) since June have gone to that great bit-bucket in the sky where all good little bits and bytes go when they die. Just coincidentally, it also appears that I have suddenly acquired some problems with the hard drive on my laptop - the machine where I was working when the folder contents 'went away.' I've been running Norton Disk Doctor on it, but there appears to be some kind of problem with the directory structure and possibly the fat table on the C: partition. That's computer-speak for "I may have to re-format that entire drive and start over - meaning re-install Windows, re-install all my software, copy several gigabytes of data files from across the network, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera." In the interim, whilst I'm diagnosing, repairing and what-not, I call upon the goodness of your hearts to retransmit any messages you sent to me or that I sent to you between 1 Jun 2000 and 15 Oct 2000. I realize that most of you are not compulsive email collectors like I am, but please check your folders for me. Hello, I am trying to make the connection of Hiram J Brady & wife Charity Cook to my Thomas K Cook & Washington "Jane" Grizzle, who moved to Yellville area about 1872-73. I do not know the relationship of Charity & Thomas. However Hiram is buried in the same 18 plot cemetery as several of Thomas & Janes family. From a History of Marion Co, Families. I did find that Charity's parents were Thomas Cook Jr & Polly Hames. Charity was born in 1811 and Thomas about 1828-34. I think Charity is probably a older sister. Also I have the name Harvard or Hairbard Cook, who I believe may belong with Charity & Thomas. Thomas & Harbard joined the 35th GA, on the same day, in Campbell Co, GA, about 3 1/2 years later, they deserted the same day & place. Can anyone help me? If you are looking for people with the surname Hogan maybe I can help. Who are you looking for? Peggy Hackler Mysty McPherson wrote: > Apparently you have been to the Marion Co web page, Ann. The information there on relocated cemeteries is about the most complete and concise you'll find anywhere. You might try the Corps of Engineers, whose office is in Mountain Home, Baxter Co AR, for more information than you obtained from the web page. Their phone is 870-431-4489. I doubt they have anything other than what's on the web page - all they were in charge of was moving the bodies to new locations when Bull Shoals Lake was created in the early 1950s, thus flooding cemeteries, churches, homes, whole towns. There is no government office or similar place in this county (or any other area county) from which you can order an official death or burial certificate. So far as I know, a personal visit to New Oakland Cemetery with good photographic equipment is the closest you'll get to documentation. > > Whether the headstones have names/dates is somewhat moot. Most "stones" around here were chunks of field stone, maybe with the initials or the name and possibly a date or two scratched on them. (These were moved by the Corps of Engineers *if* they existed). They definitely were *not* what we consider a grave stone today. Whatever form the original stones had, the elements have played havoc with all types. Similarly cattle, farmers with tractors and bush hogs, floods, land developers, and the like have all done their share of cemetery destruction and desecration.
