    3. Hi Les:--Here's what I've found in the MCAR 1870 census. Little North Fork Township: #57 Elisha Friend 30 MO. Jemima [Casebolt] 30 MO. James R 1 AR. Stephen Friend 21 AR. Serena [Casebolt] 27 MO. #60 Peter Friend 58 MO. Malinda 46 AR. Elisha 22 MO. George 16 AR. Peter 16 AR. Alexander 12 AR. Milton 11 AR. [Note: In 1860 Peter was married to Sarah and James was married to Malinda, presumably related, and were neighbors. Looks like Sarah and James died 1860-1870 and Peter and Malinda married 1860-1870. George and Peter are NOT twins; they're step-brothers and, probably, cousins.] These are the only folks from your 1880 census list found in MCAR in 1870. Mysty shakerag@mtnhome.com

    3. Hi Leslie and others, No Problem. What you need to do is subscribe to: AR-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com (mail mode) OR AR-CENSUS-LOOKUP-D-request@rootsweb.com (digest mode) type subscribe in the main window type nothing in the subject line and send. Post your query to both modes using: AR-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com Hope this is clear. I just subscribed myself to a couple of the lists, so I'm not quite sure how things are going. I think everyone is just sharing what they have with others. We all have access to some information and together we can garner a lot. It's like having a library out there in cyberspace. Hope you get the answers to your queries. B)

    3. Rhio I have been researching a John Payne, my GG-GF, who shows up in the 1880 Marion County, Franklin Township census with wife Mary, children Thomas, Martin & George. I was wondering if on the 1870 census, if any Payne's show up with Elisha Friend in James Creek or Jimmy Creek Township. I know this is a lot to ask, but I am finding the Payne/Friend families are linked quite closely. James Albert Payne shows up with Elisha Friend on the 1880 census, same county and township. 1. RE: Strawberry River
    2. Robert W. King
    3. Hi Mysty! The Strawberry begins near Wheeling in south Fulton County and flows southeastward across the northeast corner of Izard County, entirely across the middle of Sharp County, across the southwest corner of Lawrence County and just nips into extreme northeast Independence County before flowing into the Black River at a point about equidistant from Alicia, Cord, Saffell and Swifton. My mother used to splash in the small brook that became the Strawberry when she was a child a mile or two west of Wheeling. (All county names are the present day names; for historical county names, place your bets and pick your years.) Just to further muddy the water so to speak, there is a town called Strawberry located in southwest Lawrence County about a mile south of the Strawberry River. -- Robert W. 1. Talbert's Ferry
    2. Mysty McPherson
    3. I'm pretty sure, Kelly, that you'll find some references to Talbert's Ferry and to the early Talbert settlers of Marion Co in the manuscripts of Silas Claiborne Turnbo. If you'll go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion, the Marion Co AR web page, you'll find a searchable link there to all 28 volumes of Turnbo's manuscripts. This family removed to Baxter Co AR when it was created in part from Marion Co in 1873. Many of their descendants are still in the area. "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900" has a short bit of history prefacing this family genealogy: "Sim," "Fed," and "Wat" Talbert came to AR from KY in the 1820s with their sister Nancy who married John Hargrave of Izard Co. AR. "Fed" settled on White River between Cotter and (now) Bull Shoals Dam. They were friends with the Delaware Indians and Chief Johnny Cake. Started Talbert's Ferry which later became Mooney's Ferry. Charley and "Sim" had the first mail contract ca 1880. 2. Don Ott
    3. Marion County List, please respond to Kellie if you have data on Talbert's Ferry and also put it on the list for general information. Don Kellie, The old ford where Indians crossed the White River, and it is believed that DeSoto also crossed at the same place, and where whites entered into early Marion County Arkansas from the east was called Talbert's ferry. It was somethimes called Mooney's Ferry and later called Denton's Ferry. The road to and from on both sides of the river is now known as Denton's Ferry Road. Of course all ferrys have been replaced by bridges now. The Cherokee "Trail of Tears" crossed the White River at this point, they spent Christmas 1838 camped at the site. Arkansas became a state in 1836, I note the following Talberts in the 1840 Marion County Census as Head of Household. Bozzle Talburt (Bye the way the names are often spelled Talbert as well) Frederick Talburt G.W. Talburt Walter Talburt In the 1850 Cencus I find: John H. Tolbert, a farmer, don't know if that is same folk as above. I will put this response on the Marion County List and hope that others can give you additional insight as to the naming of Talbert's ferry. It even lets you enter personal events in your ancestor's life and those will be added into the time line. You can print it or copy and save it for use in your own genealogy. 1. Re: Migrations
    2. Linda: Thanks for the Web site. I put into my favorites and am anxious to get in there and really look good. Also thanks for the beautiful Thanksgiving page again. I can't help it I have to play the song again and again. Also thanks for putting my Great Grand Parents in the Obit Column (Mike Yocham and Nancy Jane Bevins Yocham. I'll bet you are happy that someone else got the web page together. I would be because that is a lot of work. And I wouldn't even know where to start. It is not my bailiwick. Colleen

    1. Re: Pay to use sites
    2. Ann McDonald
    3. Linda has made her point eliquinly and I agree. Concider all the magazines on the coffee table etc. which are costly and sometimes we hardly glance at before the next issue arrives. As to Ancestry for a couple of years before I subscribed I received their free online newsletter which daily announced what they were putting online and would be available free of charge for 10 days before being available only on the pay site. I'm not advocating that everyone join Ancestry or other such sites just that it has been money well spent for me and much more than some of the magazines laying in the basket that I have spent more on than Ancestry and received little value for. As Linda said, make a trip to a library or courthouse, then consider how much your gas, lunch, copies, etc. costs. This is just a day trip. If it's a distance add a motel, then rethink the cost of a pay online site and you've got a bargain. I challenge anyone to try to do research in another country and find anything free. I have purchased some material and do free lookups in the county where I live although my family only came to this area in the late 1930's and this area is not of interest to me genealogically. It's just a way of passing it on. Let us all be thankful for the many things that are online free and count our blessings. BTW did some of you know that this list is really not free? Your listowner makes and annual donation to keep it free for the list members.
