    1. Re: Philip and John Cooper
    2. Mysty McPherson
    3. Carolyn, several of us in the Historic Genealogical Society of MCAR have done some pretty extensive research on the many Cooper families enumerated in the various census records to see which ones fit into family groups and which ones don't. We've also delved into the (after 1873) Baxter Co AR records, Searcy Co, etc. To the best of our knowledge, these two Coopers, John and Philip, could be brothers, but it seems unlikely. Philip and his family arrived in AR by 1853, were in Union Township in the 1860 census, and are no longer in MCAR in 1870. John and his family arrived in AR by ca 1853 or ca 1856, settled first in either Union or Hampton Township, moving either from or to Union Township in 1860 (you'll find them in both townships in 1860 - honest!). One of their children is found married in Baxter Co in 1880, some of the rest are married and in Hampton or Tomahawk Townships in 1880. Daughter Melissa died in 1894 and is buried in Bruno Cemetery in Hampton Township - apparently unmarried. If John and Philip were brothers, they were obviously close enough to move to MCAR together, but not close enough to stay here together for very long. MCAR records are really, really hard to come by before Aug 1887. The courthouse burned 2 or 3 or 4 times during the Civil War. It burned again - to the ground - in Aug 1887 and *all* records were burned at that time. A few deeds were re-recorded, but that's about it. Don't know whether this helps or hinders your research. Sorry we couldn't come up with anything more concrete for you. If anyone else on this list has more information on either of these families, we'd sure be pleased if they'd share with us as well as with you. 1. Re: John B. Stiffler
    2. Hi Mysty, Yes, he ended up in Carroll Co. where the family was ennumerated on the 1850 & 1860 census, and one of the springs in downtown Harrison is named Stiffler Springs after him. But as far as the 1842 Marion Co. tax reference, I have checked myself & found nothing, so thought maybe it was a case of looking so hard you see nothing. Thanks for the look-up, I think maybe the previous researcher didn't keep real good notes on dates/places, etc.. ~gina~ Visit my homepage at http://hometown.aol.com/ginaburningsky/myhomepage/business.html

    1. John B. Stiffler
    2. My g-g-g-grandfather was John Bardell Stiffler, who trapped in and around the Marion/Carroll Co. areas in the late 1830's - early 1840's. An early Stiffler researcher wrote once that she had found where John paid taxes in 1842 in Marion Co.. Is there an index for this year for tax records, and if so, would anyone be willing to look up John's tax info & send me a copy? I would appreciate it so much. ~gina thomas patterson~ Visit my homepage at http://hometown.aol.com/ginaburningsky/myhomepage/business.html

    2. My g-g-grandparents - Frederick William & Naoma (Neoma Manus) Carsten resided in Bruno, Marion Co., for several years between 1880 & 1895. While they lived in the area, their daughter Sarah Anna Carsten died in June 1882 as a teenager, and daughter Mary Carsten died as a 4 yr old in December 1880. Has anyone seen a gravestone for either of these girls? Also, are there any available directories, etc. that will help me place more accurately the dates of arrival & departure in Marion Co. of my Carsten family? ~gina thomas patterson~ Visit my homepage at http://hometown.aol.com/ginaburningsky/myhomepage/business.html

    1. Re: Elam/McEntire
    2. Mysty, I have done quite a bit of work on the McEntire family from Marion County. The home that Dr. Elam and Rachel lived in had at one time belonged to the Champion McEntire. I was just trying to see if I could find any Elam's that may have old photos of the McEntire's. Thank you Judy

    3. Judy, you can find info on Dr George Francis Elam on the 1870, 1880, and *reconstructed* 1890 MCAR census in Hampton Township. And there's quite a bit of strictly geneo data on him and the Elam and the McEntire families in "Genealogies of MCAR Families 1811-1900" published by the Historic Genealogical Society of MCAR in 1997. There's more info on this book on the MCAR web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion. George Francis Elam is the son of William Thompson & Cornelia (Royston) Elam. He was b in Cleveland Co NC. He m/1 Rachel Dulcina McEntire who is the daughter of Champion & Sarah B (Waters) McEntire. She was b NC too. He m/2 Ellen Copeland who is the daughter of Francis Marion & Elizabeth Jane (___) Copeland. She was b in MCAR. He and Rachel had 3 children. He and Ellen had 8 children. Hope this is useful to you. If I can help further, let me know. 2. Mysty McPherson
    3. To the best of my knowledge, Ann, there are no books covering specifically either the Bearden or the Hogan families. I know the genealogical society doesn't have any and has not heard that any exist. Sure wish there were <sigh> There are many MCAR books available that contain data on these families, though, and they're very helpful in research efforts. I'm afraid no one on this list can be of much help, Ann, without more information. In order to identify your grandparents and great-grandparents, it's almost imperative that a researcher have as much of the following as you can provide. 1. Full names - first, middle, last, maiden. 2. Dates - When born/married/died - specific ones if possible - at least a time frame. 3. Places - where born/married/died - any sort of geographical clue. 4. Siblings + above data on them. If you will share as much of this sort of information as you can, I'm sure Marion Co researchers will help if at all possible. For your information: Birth and death records are maintained on the state level in Arkansas. However, these weren't required until Feb 1914. If you have the exact date and place of either a birth or a death, you can request the records from Division of Vital Records Arkansas Department of Health 4815 Markham Street Little Rock AR 72201 Marriage records are maintained at the county level in Arkansas. They are held at the county courthouse for the specific county. It may be helpful for you to know that I find no marriage record in Marion Co between 1887 and 1917 for a Bearden to a Hogan. It might also be helpful to know that there have been Beardens, Hogans, and Barnetts in at least Searcy Co and Baxter Co. too.
