    3. I stumbled across a nice site. It's called "Books We Own" and is a site where anyone with one or several reference items can volunteer to do look-ups in their own sources. And, of course, people can request look-ups. Lots of stuff, lots of states, lots of FTM CD's. A great idea and a great resource. Stop by and visit - and hopefully volunteer <g> http://www.rootsweb.com/~bwo/ Linda lhaasdav@mindspring.com Home.page http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas Marion.Co.AR http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion List hostess for -h.a.a.s/l.e.w.a.l.l.e.n/w.a.s.h.i.n.g.t.o.n n.c Interested in Construction? 3. Yes, Gina, you'll get duplicates when I send to both you and the ARMARION list. I'm a great believer in informing the list of what's been found - or not found - regarding the original question. One never knows when some little snippet will be of help to others. And that's why I do this - to help whomever I can. Just delete whichever one you don't want - or both if neither is useful to you. It's just the way I prefer to do things, so don't worry about it. It's OK - and planned. 3. Well, it was a thought. You mentioned Carroll Co too. Maybe that's another place to look for him. I can tell you this much - there's no Stiffler in the Izard Co (from which Searcy/Marion/etc were formed) 1830 nor in the MCAR 1850 nor in the Searcy Co 1850. Carroll Co remained in tact until 1869 when Boone Co was formed - and Carroll was around for a good while before then. You can access the Carroll Co page from http://www.usgenweb.com. 3. Desmond Walls Allen, owner of Arkansas Research Inc, has published MCAR Tax Records 1841-1866. Although I don't find the Stiffler surname in the MCAR 1840 census, he could be here by 1842. If you'll go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~arfha and click on commercial sites, you'll find a whole list of Des's books. This one might be helpful. Others might too. Des has a wonderful series she did for PBS a couple of years ago. If you find it on your area PBS channel, it's well worth watching. 3. Hi Velda Jo:--It's been a while, hasn't it? Glad the article on John W.'s death was useful. Have some data put together on your family which will be in the Supplement to "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900." Will send it to you privately. There are some discrepancies in the data from what you've just sent, though. Maybe between us we can piece some more of this family together. 1. Re: Carsten Family
    2. Mysty McPherson
    3. Your Carsten family does not appear in the MCAR 1880 census, Gina, but are apparently taxpayers in 1890 in Hampton Township (Bruno is a "town" there). There is no mention of this surname in "Cemeteries of MCAR" by Marian Burnes (who tramped every cemetery in the county for over 30 years). Apparently there are no headstones for these girls if, in fact, they died in MCAR. It's my guess they came here during the height of the mining era (roughly 1880-1920) and moved on to greener pastures. It's also my guess that they weren't here before June 1882 when their teenage daughter died because there's apparently no record of her burial being in MCAR. Directories are something this extremely rural area still doesn't have so that's not an option. Around here our 6x9x1/4" phone book works just fine. Tax records - both real estate and personal property - are an option, but this could get somewhat expensive. These tax books are not indexed, each one weighs around 8-10 lbs, each one contains around 250 pages or more, and it would take someone a good bit of time to search around 15 years of these records. Those researchers around here that *might* take this on charge at least $10 an hour. I'm estimating that you're looking at no less than $50 or $60 and probably more. The Real Estate Tax Assessment records for 1891 are slowly but surely being transcribed and published little by little in "Bramble Bush" which is the newsletter of the Historic Genealogical Society of MCAR. Those records already published can be found in the copies of this newsletter which are on line at http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion (later issues should be up shortly). Sorry I couldn't be of more help. 3. > Carolyn, several of us in the Historic Genealogical Society of MCAR have > done some pretty extensive research on the many Cooper families enumerated > in the various census records to see which ones fit into family groups and > which ones don't. Mysty, I received some information from Familly History Book Hardeman Co., TN page 104-105 about Thomas T. and Maggie Cooper. Sidney W. Cooper was born in 1813 in Jamestown, VA, the son of Thomas T. b. 1786 and Maggie Patterson Cooper. In 1838 Sidney W. married Elizabeth Jones and they were the parents of the following children: John W. b 1839 was a bachelor who died of pneumonia while serving in the Civil War., Mary b 1841 married Bill Babb; Frances b 1843 d 1926 "Fannie" married Ben Pirtle. Thomas J. b 1845 moved to Arkansas died and was buried there. There are more children but I was interested in the fact that Thomas J. moved to Arkansas and died there. Do you know anything about this? You sent me an article from the Mountain Echo about John W. Cooper (my great grandfather) who was killed by the explosion of dynamite November 18, 1903. I just can't find much about John W. Cooper except one sister, Louisa Caledonia who married Ben Keeter, and one brother, Berry. Their mother, Mary Adeline, was living with Berry and wife in the 1900 census in Marion County (Liberty Township, I think.) I sent for Mary's death certificate thinking I might get some information from it. It had John C as her husband but was crossed out and said "Widowed". It listed her birthplace as Nashville, TN and parents Richard Maxie and Betty Stacie. The informant was her son, Berry Cooper. The 1900 census says she is the mother of 5, 4 living. It says that John W. Cooper, her son, was born in Tennessee as were both parents. Do you have any information that might help me? I really appreciated the newspaper article that you sent on John being killed in the explosion. Velda Jo
