    3. Helena: Shame on you for forgetting this game! <LOL> Today is the day to get it started again! Us adults were talking about it last night and we can trace it back at least 150 years in both Grandma & Grandpa's families. My Dad's family played it too but I don't know how far back it goes on that side. It has been a fun filled morning with the phone ringing with everyone wanting to be the first to greet you with "Christmas Eve Gift"! Mama's home and things are great. Have a wonderful Christmas. Tell all the kids Hi for us. 3. Hi Mary - well ....... I'm a Tulsan, born & bred !!! <LOL> To the best of my knowledge this has been a tradition in my family for well over 150+ years. Our grandkids got us via e-mail this morning (actually Moms or Dads sent them last night since we have little guys <g>) and the phone has been busy since early morning with everyone trying to be the first one to call! People here in the house have been sneaking around corners and lurking outside of bathroom doors waiting to pounce !!!! And, like you, in-laws had to be taught the rules of the game, however they are now some of the most enthusiastic players in the family! Have a wonderful, wonderful Christmas and I'm glad I "gotcha" !!!! 3. Oh Linda....I thought our family was the only one who still did this. I waited until midnite last nite and e-mailed all my kids a "Christmas Eve Gift" and we always answer the phone that way this morning. Wonder where this tradition started? It's been in my family as long as I can remember. Where do you live? I am in OKLAHOMA. As our kids married we had to initiate the new inlaw with this tradition. 3. "Christmas Eve Gift" Everyone <g> Don't understand? Well, in our family we have a long Christmas Tradition that goes like this. The idea is to be the first person to say to another person "Christmas Eve Gift" on Christmas Eve. The "loser" then gives the "winner" a small token gift. When the kids are little it's a real gift. A single piece of candy, a penny, a walnut or a pecan wrapped in foil - it doesn't matter what it is as long as it's small and shinny. For the adults it's simply the fun of the game although the "loser" usually gives the "winner" a big hug. Early morning phone calls are the rule for family members who are not actually in the house on Christmas Eve. A sleepy "Christmas Eve Gift" rather than a "hello" is usually greeted with groans and lots of laughter from the caller. Or loud cheers and "gotcha" from the caller if the phone is answered with a "Hello". It's all great fun and everyone looks forward to this Christmas Eve game in my family. The kids especially enjoy this and even the shyest child will soon run to the door to greet the person on the doorstep with shouts of "Christmas Eve Gift"! It is necessary for all adults to have a pocket full of "gifts" and it is required that grandparents always be the "loser"! GOTCHA! <LOL> .... I'm the winner this Christmas Eve so I expect lots of hugs and well wishes!! And to all of you "losers" here is my Christmas Eve gift to you .... 3. Can't guarantee to be of much help 'til I take a look, Edith, but the Historic Genealogical Society of Marion Co has a rather good selection of Baxter Co AR records at the library - and it looks as if Baxter Co is where you need to look. Cotter, for instance, has been a part of Baxter Co since 1873. Before that, the area was part of Marion Co. To answer some of your questions: There were 2 papers in Cotter back then - the Courier and the Record. There was also the Baxter Co paper, the Baxter Bulletin. Both the Cotter papers have been abstracted from microfilm as well as parts of the Baxter Bulletin by Margie Garr (there's some info on her books at the Marion Co web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion). We have these at the library and I'll be happy to check them for you - *after* the holidays and *after* the weather decides to settle down. There's also a book Margie and her husband compiled called "Of Grave Importance" which has listings for about all the cemeteries in Baxter Co. Also at the library are the Baxter Co 1880 and 1900 census - in print as well as on microfilm. Any funeral homes that may have been around in those days aren't here anymore. Doubt there'd be much in the way of records even if they were. I'm not familiar with contacting Odd Fellows or Rebekah Lodge chapters for info, but Vera Reeves leroy@centurytel.net is one of the best researchers Baxter Co has and she may be able to help you here. You may want to take a look at what Baxter Co has to offer. Their web page is http://www.BaxterCountyOnline.com/baxgen. There's a second Baxter Co page too http://pastracks.com/states/arkansas/baxter which might be helpful too. If you haven't heard from me by probably around mid-January, give me a reminder. As I said, this weather has to get its act together before I promise to do anything outside of my home. Several layers of freezing rain on top of snow on top of ice with highs hovering around 32' aren't my idea of great traveling weather - and we're due for more Christmas Day and maybe for the 2 days after that <groan> Mysty shakerag@mtnhome.com ----- Original Message ----- From: Edith Pimentel <lewmark@pacbell.net> To: <ARMARION-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 23, 2000 9:45 PM Subject: CLARA A.
