    2. I forgot to add that at the Wilson's Creek Battlefield they have many records of the War so it is a wealth of information for any one doing Genealogy from that time period, especially if they had relatives who fought in that War and in the Battle of Wilson's Creek. Every year actors come here and they do a reenactment of it. Last year the whole thing did poorly because we had so much rain at the time of the play so very few came to see it. I only hope the people who do it will return to do it again. We are knee deep in snow and ice right now but hopefully it will all go away soon. I hope this helps you out some. Bren

    1. Obituary for James M Rogers
    2. Mysty McPherson
    3. The "only" reference I've found to James M. Rogers is that he's a tax payer in North Fork Township MCAR in 1890. He's not in the MCAR 1880 census. I find reference to a James Rogers (no middle initial) in Matney Township, Baxter Co 1880, aged 25, divorced, living as a boarder in the John M Martin household. I think you'll find the period from 1880 thru 1900 is difficult to research most everywhere in the US. That's because there's no 1890 census. However, armed with a geographic knowledge of the area you're researching, you'll find there are possible sources of records in many places. If you'll locate the Oakland area of Marion Co on a map, you'll find that it's almost completely separated from the rest of the county by White River (and after 1852 by Bull Shoals Lake). You'll find that commerce of all sorts was easier to get to in the Ozark Co MO area - and after Baxter Co was created in 1873 it, too, became important to those "stranded" in the Oakland area. For the most part, those living in the Oakland area traveled to Yellville to pay their taxes - and that's about it. Although Marion Co had the Mountain Echo newspaper in 1893 when James M Rogers apparently died, there's a good chance there will be no obit there. First off, there was very, very little "back-and-forth" with Oakland. Second, this was the height of the mining boom in the area. The paper was filled with "mining news" and little else. Seldom is there an obit to be found for anyone. You might luck out and find an obit in Ozark Co MO or, possibly, Baxter Co AR. For Ozark Co Mo go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~ozarkmo. For Baxter Co AR go to http://www.BaxterCountyOnline.com/baxgen AND http://www.pastracks.com/states/arkansas/baxter. Good luck with your search. And she's the compiler of "Marion Co AR 1890" which is the reconstructed 1890 census for MCAR - a real gold mine in MCAR research. But I learned it so young I just thought both my parents families did it and my children (grown) delight in it as well as the grandkids. 3. In "Cemeteries of Marion Co" by Marian Burnes, I find this, Marion. Mountain View (or Fallen Ash or Noe Cemetery - it's known by all these names): Redin McAfee b 1819 d MCAR 26 Aug 1898. Nancy B McAfee, widow of Redin, b 14 Dec 1835 d MCAR 15 Jan 1904. Rachel McAfee, daughter of A S Wood, widow of Zack, b MCAR 27 April 1861 d MCAR 10 Feb 1903. If you'll take a look at the MCAR web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion, you'll find that the Historic Genealogical Society of MCAR has several books for sale - some of the titles might prompt you to check with us to see what specific information you're searching for might be in these volumes. "Genealogies of MCAR Families 1811-1900" [Big Blue for short] contains a wealth of genealogical data on over 400 families who settled here in the 1811-1900 time frame. As co-editor of this book as well as the sequel to it, I have access to quite a bit of information - and it's all cross-referenced to spouse families :-))) An upcoming project of the Society is to publish information that locates, names, and tells a bit about as many as we can of the towns, communities, post offices, cross roads, etc. that have graced MCAR for nearly 175 years. Your information (and maps) of Dubuque would be a wonderful addition to this effort. If you have any more questions, I'll be happy to do what I can to find answers for you, Marion. 3. Posted on: Marion Co. Ar Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ar/Marion/46 Surname: AVEY, ADAMS, BRANTLEY, WOOTEN ------------------------- Your family names of Avey, Adams, Brantley, Wooten and others are listed in Genealogies of Marion County Families, 1811-1900". It was published by the "Historic and Genealogical Society of Marion County, Arkansas" Rush was, in fact, a Twp in Marion Co.. The mining picture you saw includes my Grandfather, John Albert Jefferson, sitting on the rock on the left. Searcy County was formed from Marion Co. 1838. County lines changed back and forth with the following counties: Baxter, Boone, Carroll, Fulton, Lawrence, Marion , and Searcy. These are our sister counties. These counties may contain some of your family data. Also, you didn't include any dates for a frame of reference. This is necessary for identifying your family members. Exact dates aren't necessary but "About" dates would be helpful. You need to check out the US GenWeb for the counties I have mentioned above, as well. http://www.usgenweb.org/statelinks.html Click on AR and take a look at those counties to see if they have anything on your family surnames, too. Sincerely, Rhio Gillis

    3. The battle you mention was probably Stone's River, fought in late December, 1862 about 30 miles southeast of Nashville, and about two and one half miles west of Murfreesboro. There is a National Historical Park there, of some interest. The weather was very cold, and the two opposing generals were W. S Rosecrans (Union) and Braxton Bragg. The battle was pretty much a "tie", until Bragg retreated on January third, 1863. The battle had been ferocious meanwhile, often hand to hand, with Confederate dead/wounded/missing of some 10,000 out of a total of 37,000, and Union casualties of 13 thousand out of 44 thousand. Info from Ralph Selby Henry, "The Story of the Confederacy", (New York: Grossett & Dunlap, 1931, 1936) pp. 222-225. Jerry Bennett
