Information regarding CHARLES SUMNER MERRIMAN (son of BRYANT HENDERSON "HENSE") and LOU CATHERINE LEDBETTER was posted earlier by Mysty. I also have information on children of Alvis Ryan Merriman, but not sure yet who's son he was. I'm in touch with some of the Merriman family in Holdenville and hopefully will have that soon. 3. A thought might be to look at the AR 1850 Census Index, Jerry. That way you might be able to find where the Cowan girls were at that point in time - if they were in Arkansas. An index exists for every state for most of the census years until the Soundex came out in 1880. I don't have access to one (sometimes wish I did), but someone, somewhere does <of course> I know they're at the Little Rock Library and at the AR History Commission. See if your library can get one on Interlibrary Loan - or has a clue where one might be that's near you. I recommend this 'cuz I have no info on any Lydia Cowan nor on any Sarah Cowan here in Marion Co. The Cowans here came around the 1830s from TN, but there are Cowans all over the place. Who knows? You might just get lucky <grin> Mysty shakerag@mtnhome.com ***************************************** ----- Original Message ----- From: Jerry Bennett <jbennett@brevard.net> To: <ARMARION-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 23, 2001 7:52 PM Subject: Fw: Msg from listowner > Good idea. > > I am descended from Noah (b. Some, you may have received from me, I don't know for sure. Now, my reason for writing, could you copy the page 286 on the MERRIMAN family and send it to me? Or, do it the way you did the LEDBETTER file. You did an OUTSTANDING JOB on that! I just wanted to double check my files to see if they match. On the supplement edition of the "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900," will it contain what was in the first edition or just what has been sent in for the supplement? Hope to hear something soon. If any MERRIMAN Descendants want to correspond and share information, please email me at the following email address or write me at the following address. 3. I'm probably boring everyone to death and beyond, but here I go again. Patricia, for my own information (and maybe yours), I've (I think) sorted out the Crews and Treas families and how they may or may not relate to your Cain family - and maybe more besides. Maybe some list members have some in put :-))) Wouldn't that be nice? MCAR 1880 census Sugar Loaf Township. Jeremiah Crews 38 KY KY KY. Martha 40 wife MO KY KY. James 14 son IL KY MO [b 1866]. James Treas aged 18 [b 1887] of Kingdon Springs m MCAR 12 Sep 1905 Bulah Chaffin aged 18 [b 1887] of Kingdon Springs According to marriages: Jeremiah and Martha (___) Crews had two children not listed on the 1880 MCAR census. One was their daughter Virginia who is shown on the 1880 census as married to Allen Anderson. They are living with her parents. The other was Ethel who was born ca 1883 - after the 1880 census was taken. She married George Robison 1900. J E Crews married Avarilla Cain in 1886. Charles E Treas married Fannie Crews, daughter of Jeremiah and Martha (___) Crews. Nanny Treas (sister of Charles) [b 1877] married G W Crews 1894. Then, Nancy Treas (sister of Charlie) [b 1877] married W S Fisher 1900. And in 1900 (according to "Marion Co AR 1890" by Helen McMindes), George Crews is living with his brother-in-law Charles Treas. Nanny/Nancy Treas/Crews (according to "Marion Co. AR 1890) is living with her parents.. Now, in 1900, we have Robert Casebolt married to Manerva ___ b MO ca 1841. In his household we find two grandchildren, John M Crews b Nov 1889 AR MO AR and Marie Crews b 1895. Six years between children is a long time. I'm suggesting that *possibly* John M Crews is the son of J E and Avarilla and that his parents are both deceased or Avarilla is deceased and J E has remarried. I'm also suggesting that *probably* Marie Crews is the daughter of George W and Nanny Treas. My biggest hangup with this is that the father of John M Crews was born in MO when James Crews (son of Jeremiah & Martha) was born in IL. However, I'm still having a problem with Jim and Minerva Cain being buried together in Cain Cemetery, with Minerva Cain being born in KY, and with Manerva ___, 2nd wife of Robert Casebolt, being born in MO. And I'm not *real* sure the J E Crews that married Avarilla Cain is the James Crews who is the son of Jeremiah and Martha. All of your conjecture is entirely possible. I'm just sort of playing Devil's Advocate - trying to make aboslutely sure there's no 'coon in the woodpile here. I'll see if I can find more information when (and if) I go to the library this week (I've dinner guests tomorrow night and Friday is my 70th here and Saturday is another birthday here - and I'm exhausted just thinking about it all <grin>. Will check the 1900, 1910, and 1920 microfilm *whenever* I get to the library next. Oh, how I wish someone would put them in print <wow>. Mull all this over. It's rather interesting - proposes more questions than it answers, that's for sure!!! Mysty shakerag@mtnhome.com

Their son, Joseph, born 1838, married Sarah COWAN sometime. He was my great grandfather. Died Clarksville, AR 1925. Brother Champion Henderson Bennett, b. ca. 1837, married Lydia Cowan. 3. Pat, Tammy, Thelma, and I have been digging around together in this family for a couple of weeks now. And we try to do most of our back-and-forth on the ARMARION list. That way, whatever data we come up with gets archived by rootsweb and is there for everyone to search. It also allows others to add their little tidbits (like Colleen did with the Ledbetter-Yocham marriage). I'm the only one that's not kin. I'm just a Marion Co researcher. And another society member and I compiled and edited "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900" for the Historic Genealogical Society of MCAR. A Supplement to this book is in the works as I speak. So, I'm fairly familiar with around 6-700 MCAR families. Although anything but complete and not 100% accurate yet, here's my latest rough draft compilation for the Ledbetter family. Sources are listed at the end. Please, please feel free to comment, question, add. That's the way to - hopefully - get it right eventually. L E D B E T T E R NEW 1 ARTHUR LEDBETTER b Brunswick Co. 3. Dear Mysty, I still am not ready to drop the CAIN/CASEBOLT connection possibility. I do think that Jeremiah CREWS' son James is the one that md Avarilla. Their marriage is in the ARMARION marriage entries, in 1886. So if this is so, and Avarilla was Minerva Casebolt's daughter, her children would still be Jeremiah Crews' grandchildren also. Wouldn't they? Another interesting thing I noticed in that 1900 census entry is that where it asked for number of children by this mother, Minerva answered "1". So I think the 3 children listed with her and Robert on the 1880 census were not hers but Louisa, Roberts first wife. Anyway, its still a theory, but I'm not ready to give up on it yet. Thanks again. 3. Thank you Mysty for your reply! I chose to respond on the list in hopes someone with a "clue" might see it. I have copies of the pages from the 1850 Marion County census that shows Thomas'age to be 61, which corresponds with other information I have gathered. (I have copies of several "family published" books.) I also wonder if the Eliza shown on the census as age 28 is the daughter Catherine Eliza. She is shown in the Washington County, TN 1850 census in the home of her uncle David Stevens along with her two sons George W. and Francis M. ages 2 and 1. Also, my information shows Catherine Eliza being born in 1829 and this is the age shown on the TN census. The Eliza shown on the Marion county census could be wife of Foster, otherwise where would the 9 month old Samuel belong? True enough, as the family legend goes, there were deaths of daughters-in-law from fever while enroute to AR, but Foster could have remarried to Eliza thus accounting for Daniel age 2 and Samuel 9 months. Oh yes, the family shown as family #322-323 was Henry Stevens, Margaret Adams Stevens and their first two children. Just can't figure out who this 4 year old Hudspeth child in Thomas' household would be. One possibility, if Foster did marry Eliza as second wife, was she a Hudspeth widow with this child? The more I think about this, the "muddier the water get"! Anyway, thanks again!

    1. Post to the LIST
    2. Rhio
    3. Hello all! I want to reiterate what Mysty said to Pat. It is important, for a mail list to be successful and helpful to all, that everyone post to the list. This means that off-list communication helps no one. I can't state it stronly enough. Someone might find in your family a member of their own - a daughter who was "lost", perhaps. I will share an example. I think it was Frances who posted information on the NOWLIN family. I had a NOWLIN in my family but I didn't know who her parent were. I saw a posting that caught my eye and I was able to get the name of Monta Mae NOWLIN's parents. The list can save many of us a lot of time in finding our family members. We all have someone who lived in MCAR. That's why we're here, isn't it? It also helps the Gen Society and future researchers with their Marion Co. families. We have information that others don't have. Let's share it. It might even help Mysty find a missing link and make corrections to the upcoming SUPPLEMENT to "Genealogies of Marion County Families 1811-1900". You can be a part of this by using the list and getting to know others who share a common location in the the trek west - and AR was west when our families came to Marion Co. Thanks to all, B) listowner

    3. Your reply via ARMARION-L is just great, Pat. As Rhio says, this is the way to "catch" folks who might have bits and pieces of info on this family. And it's also the best way of sharing with others. And citing sources informs folks of some of the places info can be found. It can be real helpful all the way around. If list members aren't interested, they can hit their "delete" key. Looks like you can drop the Cain-Casebolt theory, Pat. Found this tonight in "Marion Co. AR 1890" by Helen McMindes. This is a reconstruction for MCAR of the lost 1890 census. A marvelous aid to MCAR researchers <grin>. J. M. Crews. A Jeremiah Crews, 38, and his family is found in Sugar Loaf Township in 1880. There is a son James Crews, 14, and a son George W Crews, 7. In 1900, George W, 27, is living with his brother-in-law, Charley Treece, and in the household of Robert Casebolt are his (Jeremiah's) grandchildren, John M. Crews, 11, and Marie Crews, 4. This James Crews, 14, might be the J E Crews you think married Avarilla Cain. Age is about right, isn't it? There are some cemeteries in MCAR with a family name, but only one - maybe two - people buried there that carried that name. The rest aren't kin at all. Maybe sort of near neighbors, but not kin. I'll leave you with all this tonight and dig around a bit more tomorrow. 3. Hi All, I am looking for information on Reuban Madewell, son of Solomon Madewell who lived in Marion Co. in 1850 and 1860. Reuban was in the civil war and his service record just ends - His brother was in the same unit and is listed as a deserter, but also there is a story that he was killed and buried along a creek. Reuban, according to family history was the father of Martha Matilda Madewell who was born in Arkansas July 1862 - Her mother was Martha Ann, possibly HARP. Two other children listed as Madewell of Martha Ann were Rhoda (born abt 1857) and Mary (born Feb 1870). Any help appreciated. Thanks. Janet

    3. Dear Mysty, I am not sure if my reply should be sent to your email address or the ARMARION-D address, but here goes: I am very grateful to you for sending me those items. I have seen many of them, particularly the 1870 census. But the one that really helps is the ones from "Genealogiesof MCAR Families 1811-1900." Guess I'll have to get a copy. I did not know that Amanda KANE (must be CAIN) md. James Lafayette PANGLE. That helps! I interpreted a couple of the census entries differently than the ones you sent, but realize they are hard to read and probably have lots of errors in the original, also. The one about Minerva CAIN and her household: I thought the three young men were surnamed SHELTON, not CAIN. I still think so. One reason is the names of those buried in the CAIN Cemetery, taken from the ARMARION cemetery records. Grave Name Grave 1-6 unknown 1-6 7 Mrs. Sally Shelton 7 8 Tom Shelton 8 9 Pet Shelton 9 10 Jerome Cain 348 11 Jim Cain 346 12 Minerva Cain 347 So, see, this Tom Shelton and his family were buried with Jim and Minerva CAIN. So he must be the same person as the SHELTON, Thomas with Minerva CAIN on that census. But then that also complicates another of my theories, which is that Minerva CAIN md Robert CASEBOLT later. If she did, then why was she buried with the name CAIN. Guess I should check to see if Minerva CASEBOLT is buried in any of the cemeteries. Also, I will send for Robert CASEBOLT's pension records to see if it mentions his wife's previous surname. Does anyone already have a copy of it? I also looked with new eyes at the census entry for Mary STARR and the 3 young people with her. The Angeline CAINE I was sure was the dau of James M CAIN and Amanda M STONE. But I wondered who the Mandela and George STARR were. But now I think they must have also been CAIN children. The 1860 census of Ozark Co, MO shows the family of James CAIN like this: James M. CAIN 46 m w farmer Tenn Sarah C. " 23 f w " Eliza " 20 f w Alab James " 12 m w Mo Spencer C " 11 m w " George W. " 8 m w " Amanda M " 4 f w " Angaline " 1 f w " Isaac 24 m b Tenn Bice 24 ? b " Pleasant 9 m b " You will note that the three younger children are the same (or nearly the same) as the three with Mary STARR. The ages for Mandala and George don't quite jive, and there is the difference between Amanda M and Mandala. So if these are the same people, then who is Mary STARR? Could she be an aunt? Or perhaps a grandmother? I'm slowly piecing it together. 1. Re: Thomas Stevens ca 1850
    2. Mysty McPherson
    3. I'm assuming, Patsy, that you've discovered the error the census taker made in this family in the MCAR 1850 census. If not, here's what it says in the transcribed 1850 by Nancy L. Wood. #251-252 Thomas Stephens 22 TN. Union Township. Foster 35 TN. Elisa 28 TN. John S. 15 TN. Thomas 9 TN. George Hudspeth 4 AR. (Note on microfilm: "This family continued on page 47, family 323 having made a mistake in transcribing. J.M.C. This deficiency of 4 [rest unreadable]." Next family # shown on film is 254-255. N. L. W.) #322-323 Henry Stephens 32 M TN. Margaret 20 AR. Isaac 3 AR. Sarah Jane 2 AR. Immediately above this entry, with no dwelling/family number is: Daniel/David Stephens 2 AR. Samuel Stephens 9/12 AR (note on microfilm: page 36, family 252. N. L. W.) Sounds to me as if this may be one of those notorious cases we hear about where one or the other Stephens family didn't directly give the information to the enumerator and someone else "filled in the blanks." Who knows? Looks to me as if Thomas Stephens is the head of household, but his age should be 52, not 22. Apparently his son Foster is a widower with sons John S and Thomas. The husband of his daughter Elisa isn't currently living with them but his grandson George Hudspeth is. Daughter Margaret is still living at home, but is unmarried. Just who David and Samuel belong to, I'm not sure. Although listed as Stephens' they could be Hudspeths. I have access to the Washington Co TN marriage records at the library in Yellville. This might provide a clue or two. Next time I'm there, I'll check and see what I come up with. I can't definitely say whether Davis Hudspeth is related to the other Hudspeths in MCAR or not. It's an extremely complex family to research - almost as if they all hid away now and then just for kicks. I do know there's a George Hudspeth family with 3 unknown sons b TN 1820, 1822, and 1823. One of these might be Davis. Maybe the marriage records will help here. There are no death records anywhere in AR before 1914. The only Stephens I find in "Cemeteries of MCAR" by Marian Burnes are: Water Creek Cemetery: William W 1850-1905. Mary 1851-1935. [probably his wife]. Granvell b/o WW 22 Jan 1832-10 May 1910. Sarah 22 Dec 1837-22 Feb 1925 [probably his wife]. Not being a whole bunch of help, am I? Well, we'll see, huh? I believe Thomas' wife, Margaret Sellers Stevens also died in Marion County shortly after they arrived in the area. Their daughter Eliza Catherine had married Davis Hudspeth before they left TN and found after they arrived in Marion County that he already had a wife and children in TX. Family legend says there was court action on this. Was he related to the other Hudspeth's in Marion County? There was also a son, Foster Stevens, shown on the 1850 census. Haven't been able to find him after that unless he was the brother who went to TX with Henry after Thomas' death and his other name was William or Billie. > > > ============================== > Shop Ancestry - Everything you need to Discover, Preserve & Celebrate > your heritage! > http://shop.myfamily.com/ancestrycatalog >
