    3. Thanks Sue, Julie and Mysty for your answers. Sue, the Charles B. Lance you mention is also on the 1870 ARMARION census with his family in Rapps Barron, and nearby is Hardy M. Lance and wife Sarah T. Also, there is a Joseph Lance and wife Sarah and children. Living close is a Yilpha or Zelpha Lance, age 60 from NC. I thought it said male when I read the census, but now I think it was a female. Should look at it again. She or he had two children surnamed Briant, Benj and Duglas, ages 12 and 9. I then found what I believe to be the same family on the 1850 cenus of Cannon Co, Tenn,Civil Dist #7 p. 378 Henry Lance m 48 b. NC Zelphy " f 45 " Charles B." m 15 TENN Minerva Jane" f 16 " Thomas C. " m 14 " Wm. H. " m 12 " H.M.B. " m 10 " I just wonder if this Henry Lance and wife Zelpha could have had an older son, as they would have been in their 30's when Charles B was born. Well, here is another possibility for my Nicholas Washington. I just noticed something interesting about Vandall Lance. In 1850 he was 42, born in Ohio. In the same year on the Ozark Co, MO census, Moses Lance was 55, born in NJ. But his eldest son listed was Vandle S., age 22, b MO. Quite a coincidence that there were two men named Vandall/Vandle Lance, living within a few miles of each other. Anyway, still doesn't get me a Nicholas Washington. I agree that the Wash Lance was probably too young to be the father of my Mary Susan. I will write to the two Lance researchers you gave me addresses for. Thanks. Patricia Gausnell

    3. Haven't a clue about Elam G. W. McCracken's wife's name, Pat. "History of Marion Co AR" by Earl Berry calls her "Gencie." Probably somewhere in the archives there's a reference of some sort. Could be just folks translating Jincy to Gencia to Algencia - sounds -what? - more exciting? than just plain Jane maybe. Who knows. Thanks for the Cannon Co TN 1850 info. Will plug in what I don't already have. I've never run across any reference to Jasper McCracken. Maybe he died or married and stayed in TN or ran away from home or settled some place other than MCAR. As for Sarah J McCracken - she's listed in her parents' home as age 16 b TN in the MCAR 1860 census for Jimmys creek Township. She's probably married by 1870 'cuz she's not with her parents then. I'm sure someone would have mentioned it long before now if she'd died during the Civil War hullabaloo around here. Fell into you web page, by the way, while on a search for the surname Maynard. There's a *big* mistake you should fix. Mary Elizabeth McCracken (daughter of Elam) did *not* marry Silas Claiborne Turnbo. He married Mary Matilda Holt (daughter of Fielding H & Elizabeth [Hamblin] Holt). "Betsy" married William G. "Bill" Parker: WILLIAM G. "Bill" PARKER (twin son of John Garrison & Mary Elizabeth [Johnson] Parker) b Rutherford Co. TN 25 Oct 1832 d MCAR 17 Feb 1923 bu Fairview Cemetery m MARY ELIZABETH "Betsy" McCRACKEN (daughter of Elam G. W. & Algencia "Gencie" [Maxey] McCracken) b TN 27 Sep 1837 d MCAR 30 March 1903 bu Fairview Cemetery. Settled at Jimmies Creek. Served in Co A. 14th AR Infantry; applied for a pension 1910. In Jimmies Creek Township MCAR 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890, 1900, 1910, 1920. This family is in Family Genealogies at http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion. Quite well done, too. Talk to you later. 3. Neither of these families is easy to research, Pat. Suggest you go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion. Scroll down to Elam McCracken. Then email Helen Lease - her address is at the top of the page. She's been very helpful to me on this Elam McCracken family. Oh, and I think you'll find that Elam's wife's name was Algencia Maxey and she was called "Gencie." And I also think you'll find the vast majority of records spell it Lantz. They're not English - they apparently came from Hamburg, Germany. One gal I know of who's top notch at the Lantz family is Joyce (Lantz) Havner. She used to live in Mt Home, but she's not listed there in the new phone book. Maybe someone on the list knows how to contact her. Another that's been a big help is Linda Sheehan in Ca. if you'd like her address, I can send it to you off list. Lewis D Osborne (son of Jonas & Sarah [___] Osborne) b TN 1838/9 m Margaret L McCracken (daughter of Elam & Algencia "Gencie" [Maxey] McCracken) b TN 1842. Actually, the more I dig around trying to find answers for you in the individial family files I have (two sets - "Big Blue Book" and its Supplement), the more confused I get (and the census records are no great help <groan>. Why not go to the MCAR page (see URL above), print out the Elam McCracken and Osborne families (and any others that seem to fit) and see what you can put together. Meantime I'll spend some time digging thru this mess and see what I can come up with. Meantime, would you share with me what you have from Cannon Co TN, please? Working with unknowns (other McCracken kids, for instance) can make for an awful lot of mistakes. And, if anyone on the list can help Pat, please do so. Thanks. 3. I found a William Sanders listed in the 1880's census with his wife Martha and child Emaly V. in Jimmies Creek. I believe that these are my gg-grandparents and at one time lived in Mo. came to Ar. and then went back. Emily Viola was my great grandmother and was born in Missouri. She married William F. Starkey, but I don't know when or where.(I think Mo. as that is where all of their children were born.) They are buried in Minco, Grady Co. Ok. I have been told that William died and Martha remarried. William Sanders was born in Tn. in 1844 and Martha was b. in Tn. in 1846. Does anyone know this family? I have searched all over Mo. for this family for years and was surprised to find them in Marion Co. with all of the rest of my ancestors. Is there a connection with the other Sanders that lived at Jimmies Creek? Sharon

    3. Lucille, I find no record of a John Wesley King nor his son Alex King in either the 1850 nor 1860 census for Marion Co AR. A good place to look for these folks would be in the "AR 1850 Census Index" and the "AR 1860 Census Index" by Accelerated Indexing Systems. Each lists the name and age of everyone in the census for that year as well as the county where each resided when the census was taken. Most larger libraries and state archive libraries have these. Smaller libraries and historical and genealogical societies also often have them. 3. Hi Larry. How're you doing? Been a while, hasn't it? Checked the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census for Marion Co and the 1850, 1860 for Searcy Co. There's no listing in any of them for the surname Abney (nor for any variant spelling I could dream up). And there's no mention of any Abney in "Genealogies of MCAR Families 1811-1900" either as a family or as an individual. See if you can find a copies of "AR Census Index 1840" and "AR Census Index 1850" by Accelerated Indexing Systems. Also MO for these years. These give the name, age, and county location of everyone listed in each census. It's entirely possible the Abneys breezed thru MCAR between census years, settling maybe in Fulton Co or Izard Co or Carroll Co or Newton Co or even somewhere in MO. I know Little Rock Library and the AR History Commission have these books so I'm sure one of the larger libraries in St Louis will have them. I also know that Nancy (Abney) Wood's kids mostly married around Springfield MO. It's my guess that Nancy split MCAR during the Civil War - or at least after "Berry" died - and went to MO for safety - or possibly to join family already there. 3. Lucille, I don't seem to connect this King to the King's of Marion county Arkansas. I will put your message on the Marion County network and hope that someone else can help you. 2. Patsy Stevens
    3. Thanks again Mysty for the ideas! Yes, it seems that the members of this family who didn't die, moved in the early 1850's, most of them to TX. I have "vague" tracks on most of them except the son, Foster. This information you shared, didn't get me any closer to solving the Stevens saga, but did connect the Hudspeths with the Adams branch. Old Davis must be connected to this group somehow. Just too many little ties. Thanks again!
