I ran across the below entry for John W. Hensley at the LDS site and am wondering if it might be the same John W. Hensley that is a brother to our James Council Hensley. The entry states the right birthplace. The birthdate shown of 1888 is different BUT very close to the date I have which is Oct. 1889. LDS shows him as having 7 children which our records show for our John W. too and the names LDS lists for two of the children just happen to be the same as we have. If anyone knows the names of the rest of the children (so I can compare them with my records), siblings and/or parents of John W. I would sure appreciate hearing from you. I'm hoping someone can shed a little light for me. I am looking for any information on the Amos Sylvester Hensley family that lived (per the 1900 Arkansas census) in Blythe Township of Marion Co. at the time of the census. We've been unable, thus far, to find any info on Amos or his family enumerated below. We know that Amos originally came from North Carolina and supposedly had been raised by a "Boomer" Bailey after the death of his mother. (Easiest viewed fully enlarged) 1 Amos Sylvester Hensley, b. Nov, 1866 in NC married Millie Ann Walker, b Apr, 1867 in Tennessee. They had the following 11 children: 2 James Council Hensley, b. 2/16/1887 in Keener, Boone Co., Arkansas, d. 4/41966 in Lowell, OR m. Nettie Azlee Stewart, b. 1/3/1889 in Boone Co., Arkansas, d. 2/24/1957 in Lowell, OR. They had the following 6 children: 3 Vernon Curtis Hensley (our line) b. 2/22/1916 in Pyatt, AR d. 4/12/1991 in Lowell, OR m. Ruby Pauline Strunk, living. They had 3 children: 4 Sibyl Louise Hensley, living, m. Frank Wright 4 Billy Leon Hensley, living, m. Carol Ann Pyle (me) 4 Ray Eugene Hensley, living 3 Verlon Hensley b. 7/10/1923 in AR d. 8/26, 1975 San Joaquin, CA m. Vera ____. 3 James Emmett Hensley, d. 1959 m. Dorothy Jane DeMoss 1922-1967 They had the following 2 children: 4 Betty Elizabeth Hensley, living m. Fred Donley 4 James Aurie Hensley, living 3 Agnes Hensley, b 6/5/1909 d. 10/1978 in OR m. Emery Cochran, living 3 Nina Hensley, b. 4/26/1911, d. 6/13/1985 in Lowell, OR m. ____ Wentz. They had 1 son: 4 Walter Wentz, living 3 Zelma Hensley, b 4/3/1921, d.12/9/1988 in Eugene, OR. m. Fred Cook, living. 2 John W. Hensley, b. 10/1889 Had the following 6 children 3 Leonard, m. Delphia (sp ?) 3 Benton 3 Coeta (sp. ?) 3 Clarence, 3 Mayvena (sp ?) name later changed to Cheri 3 Wanita (sp ?) probably Juanita 3 Rocky 2 Suzie (possibly Saissio of the 1900 census), m. Van Cunningham 2 William aka: Bill, b. 2/1893 2 Walsey (sp?, possibly Orissie of the 1900 census) 2 Flosie (sp? probably Flossie), b. 3/1897 m. ___ Johnson 2 Essie b. 3/1899 m. ____ Hillhouse 2 Leana (sp? possibly Lena) m. Lee Cottrell (sp ?) 2 Burt/Bert 2 Perley (sp?) supposedly drowned in Arkansas 2 Oscar (thought to be the youngest) Any info on any of the above people would be much appreciated, as I've reached a dead-end. I'm having a bit of a problem with some of your information, John, because I can't seem to verify it in area records. There is no Gibson surname found in the 1850 MCAR census. In the MCAR 1860 census for Rapps Barrens Township, I find: B A Gibson 24 TN. Rebecca 25 TN. Alexander M 3 TN. John F 1 TN. [This township was removed to Baxter Co AR when it was created in 1873]. There is no Gibson surname found in the 1870 MCAR census. In the Baxter Co AR 1880 census for Whiteville Township, I find: Adam Gibson 34 TN -- --. Sarah E 29 TN TN TN. Ida 8 AR TN TN. William 5 AR TN TN. Rebecca 5/12 (b Jan) AR TN TN. [Whiteville Township was in Marion Co before it was removed to Baxter Co when it was formed in 1873]. In the 1880 MCAR census for Union Township, I find: John S Gibson 34 physician MS AL TN. Laura 17 wife TN TN TN. In "14th AR Confederate Infantry" by Desmond Walls Allen, I find: B A Gipson enlisted in Co I, pvt/pvt, 29 July 1861 at Yellville. Deserted 29 July 1862. In "27th AR Confederate Infantry" by Desmond Walls Allen, I find: John K Gibson enrolled 18 June 1862 Marion Co., aged 23, pvt/pvt, Co. E, deserted 20 Sep 1863. [Several other Gibsons are listed, but they are from Searcy, Carroll, & Newton Co AR] Dowd's Company, Arkansas State Troops CSA lists no Gibson volunteer in MCAR in 1861. [A list of these men can be found at http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar]. In Federal Land Records for MCAR, I find only: Arch H Gibson 160 acres in S11 T19N R15W 13 Aug 1896. [He was b KY 1856]. Johnson Gibson 160 acres in S21 T19N R15W 9 April 1900. [He was b KY 1858]. In "Genealogies of Marion Co AR Families 1811-1900" I find: John Wesley Messick (son of Ruby Catherine Messick, daughter of Elisha Messick) b Coffee Co TN 28 March 1814 d Baxter Co AR 3 Nov 1893 bu Old Messick Cemetery m/1 Celia Wilkerson b Nashville TN 20 Feb 1815 d MCAR 7 Nov 1866; m/2 MCAR 1867 Lydia Chloe (Frazelle) Young (widow of John Thomas Young). Emigrated to MCAR 1858. Cynthia Ann Isabella Messick (daughter of John Wesley & Celia [Wilkerson] Messick) b TN 1852 m John Gibson. There are absolutely no county records for Marion Co AR *before* Aug 1887. No tax, no death, no marriage, no nothing. That's when the courthouse burned to the ground, taking *all* records with it. I'm seriously beginning to think you should probably be looking in TN - possibly Marion Co TN - for some of these people and records. They simply aren't here in the Marion Co AR area. I'd like to suggest that you look in the "TN Census Index" by Accelerated Indexing Systems for the years 1850, 1860, 1870 to see if you can locate these people in TN. And then do the same thing for "AR Census Index" for the years 1860, 1870 to see where they may be in AR. Most larger libraries and genealogical societies have these. Interlibrary Loan is always a possibility too. I wish you luck in your search. Noted in the Obit of Kate Morgan that her mother was listed as Cora Joyce Williams. Unfortunately I thought that Betty Cordray was the mother of all 11 of the children. An then there is of course, Phenice Lynch who was also a wife of Robert Alonzo "Bob" Wood. Can anyone help me with this family? Don Ott

We always hear that the U.S. has such a terribly high crime rate, well, the international press doesn't seem to bear that out, does it? Read on............. This is a WorldNetDaily's printer-friendly version of the article which follows. To view this item online, visit http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?21902 Friday, March 2, 2001 -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Britain, Australia top U.S. in violent crime Rates Down Under increase despite strict gun-control measures -------------------------------------------------- By Jon Dougherty -------------------------------------------------- © 2001 WorldNetDaily.com Law enforcement and anti-crime activists regularly claim that the United States tops the charts in most crime-rate categories, but a new international study says that America's former master -- Great Britain -- has much higher levels of crime. The International Crime Victims Survey, conducted by Leiden University in Holland, found that England and Wales ranked second overall in violent crime among industrialized nations. Twenty-six percent of English citizens -- roughly one-quarter of the population -- have been victimized by violent crime. Australia led the list with more than 30 percent of its population victimized. The United States didn't even make the "top 10" list of industrialized nations whose citizens were victimized by crime. Jack Straw, the British home secretary, admitted that "levels of victimization are higher than in most comparable countries for most categories of crime." Highlights of the study indicated that: The percentage of the population that suffered "contact crime" in England and Wales was 3.6 percent, compared with 1.9 percent in the United States and 0.4 percent in Japan. Burglary rates in England and Wales were also among the highest recorded. Australia (3.9 percent) and Denmark (3.1 per cent) had higher rates of burglary with entry than England and Wales (2.8 percent). In the U.S., the rate was 2.6 percent, according to 1995 figures; "After Australia and England and Wales, the highest prevalence of crime was in Holland (25 percent), Sweden (25 percent) and Canada (24 percent). The United States, despite its high murder rate, was among the middle ranking countries with a 21 percent victimization rate," the London Telegraph said. England and Wales also led in automobile thefts. More than 2.5 percent of the population had been victimized by car theft, followed by 2.1 percent in Australia and 1.9 percent in France. Again, the U.S. was not listed among the "top 10" nations. The study found that Australia led in burglary rates, with nearly 4 percent of the population having been victimized by a burglary. Denmark was second with 3.1 percent; the U.S. was listed eighth at about 1.8 percent. Interestingly, the study found that one of the lowest victimization rates -- just 15 percent overall -- occurred in Northern Ireland, home of the Irish Republican Army and scene of years of terrorist violence. Analysts in the U.S. were quick to point out that all of the other industrialized nations included in the survey had stringent gun-control laws, but were overall much more violent than the U.S. Indeed, information on Handgun Control's Center to Prevent Handgun Violence website actually praises Australia and attempts to portray Australia as a much safer country following strict gun-control measures passed by lawmakers in 1996. "The next time a credulous friend or acquaintance tells you that Australia actually suffered more crime when they got tougher on guns ... offer him a Foster's, and tell him the facts," the CPHV site says. "In 1998, the rate at which firearms were used in murder, attempted murder, assault, sexual assault and armed robbery went down. In that year, the last for which statistics are available, the number of murders involving a firearm declined to its lowest point in four years," says CPHV. However, the International Crime Victims Survey notes that overall crime victimization Down Under rose from 27.8 percent of the population in 1988, to 28.6 percent in 1991 to over 30 percent in 1999. Advocates of less gun control in the U.S. say the drop in gun murder rates was more than offset by the overall victimization increase. Also, they note that Australia leads the ICVS report in three of four categories -- burglary (3.9 percent of the population), violent crime (4.1 percent) and overall victimization (about 31 percent). Australia is second to England in auto theft (2.1 percent). In March 2000, WorldNetDaily reported that since Australia's widespread gun ban, violent crime had increased in the country. WND reported that, although lawmakers responsible for passing the ban promised a safer country, the nation's crime statistics tell a different story: Countrywide, homicides are up 3.2 percent. Assaults are up 8.6 percent. Amazingly, armed robberies have climbed nearly 45 percent. In the Australian state of Victoria, gun homicides have climbed 300 percent. In the 25 years before the gun bans, crime in Australia had been dropping steadily. There has been a reported "dramatic increase" in home burglaries and assaults on the elderly.
