    2. Linda: I stopped and read several of the items including the one about Turley. The old school house reminds me of the one that I went to in Sperry which long ago has been torn down. At the time I went there, I thought it was the biggest building in the whole world. And then I went back later and it didn't look so big at that time. But it still brough back lots of memories. Ah memories. Thanks again Linda, I needed that. Colleen

    2. Linda: Not yet, I haven't had time to do much as our week end was so busy. But I will. I know Turley well also as we still have friends that live there and it is just between Sperry and Tulsa. Tha last time we lived there we lived right off of Peoria on N. Trenton. When we drove by there a few years ago the area had turned into a slum. My two children were born when we lived there and it was a nice area then. It just breaks your heart to see neighborhoods go down hill like that. Linda on one of the letters that I got that someone had said to check the attachment. Don't !!!!!!!!! because it had a worm in it and my virus protector caught it and wouldn't open up the attachment. I did write to the person that had sent it hoping he can get rid of his virus before sending out anymore letters. Now that people are starting to comment, I have got to take time to read the first installment on the Tulsa Stuff. Thanks again Linda...you are the greatest. Colleen

    3. Many of the old timers referred to Tulsa as Tulsey Town mainly because of the way some of the Creeks pronounced Tulsa. Tulsa / Tulsey was the name of the Creeks home in AL. The Creeks named the area around the council oak Tulsa long before the white man showed up. As an FYI the council oak is still standing and not long ago several cuttings were taken and new trees started because of the age of the oak and it's health right now isn't the best. One of the new oaks will be planted at TU. And the rest are being nurtured so that if the original oak finally dies there will another to take it place. 3. There were many people from Marion county who moved to Tulsa, Ok. I have received permission from the ggrandaughter of J M Hall, one of the founders of Tulsa, to post his book "The Beginning of Tulsa" on the web. This book was written in 1927, updated in 1933 and has been out of print and almost impossible to find since the mid 1930s. The book tells the story of the beginning of Tulsa and has lots of names and bits of trivia about the early settlers. In fact a man by the name of Flippin was one of the early settlers. I have the first 20 pages up if you want to check it. The search engine has not yet spidered my site so you'll have to read <g> http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas/learningcenter.html Last item on the page. Enjoy! 3. It May Be Hard to Believe but, 100 years ago --- The average life expectancy in the United States was 47. Only 14 percent of the homes in the United States had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three minute call from Denver to New York City cost $11. There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the twenty-first most populous state in the Union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents an hour. The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2500 per year, a veterinarian between $1500 and $4000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births in the United States took place at home. Ninety percent of all U.S. physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason, either as travelers or immigrants. The five leading causes of death in the U.S. were: 1. Pneumonia and Influenza, 2. Tuberculosis, 3. Diarrhea, 4. Heart disease, 5. Stroke. The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. Drive-by-shootings -- in which teenage boys galloped down the street on horses and started randomly shooting at houses, carriages, or anything else that caught their fancy were an ongoing problem in Denver and other cities in the West. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was thirty. The remote desert community was inhabited by only a handful of ranchers and their families. Plutonium, insulin, and antibiotics hadn't been discovered. Scotch tape, crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. One in 10 U.S. adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Coca-Cola contained cocaine instead of caffeine. Punch card data processing had recently been developed, and this early predecessor of the modern computer were used for the first time by the government to help compile the 1900 census. Eighteen percent of households in the United States had at least one full-time servant or domestic. There were about 230 reported murders in the U.S. annually.

    3. Sheryl: the word "pole" is actually "poll." This is a "poll tax" - a tax levied on those who met the criteria (they varied from place to place and over the years) to be allowed to vote. A dictionary or encyclopedia would give more detail, I'm sure. 3. Betty, there is no surname RHINES in the Marion Co AR 1870, 1880, reconstructed 1890, nor 1900 census. And there is no ANDERSON DAVENPORT either. Also, there is no marriage record in Marion Co AR for Almeda Rhines and Anderson Davenport between 1887 and 1917. The closest I can come is a C. P. Rhyne b 1889 d 1943 buried in the Promise Land Cemetery. This cemetery is in the northeast corner of Marion Co AR on the north side of Bull Shoals Lake not far from the Missouri border.
