Here's some info for you. As usual, there's always someone working on the Magness family. It's quite large, married into a myriad of different families, settled in several places in the area. Best thing to do is be in contact with ARMARION-L and to dig thru the Marion Co web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion to find folks working on the Magness (or any other) family. I can't guarantee the accuracy of all dates and relationships. The Marion Co courthouse was burned twice during the Civil War and again in Aug 1887 when *ALL* county records were destroyed. For example, Joseph Magness (h/o Rachel Rea d/o Capt John C Ray) b 1822 d 1859 bu Patton Cemetery indicates to me that the Mary E Magness that married William Marion Smothers probably is not the daughter of Joseph and Rachel. Or William Marion Smothers didn't marry a Magness at all. FYI - I'm not researching the Magness family. I'm a researcher for Marion Co and all the folks that have lived here. I help compile the genealogies of MCAR families for books for the Historic Genealogical Society of MCAR in an effort to have the families as accurate as possible so I'm juggling around 800-1000 families at once <groan>. Hope some of this is helpful. Marion Co AR 1860 census - Blythe Township. # 386 Rachel Magness 40 TN [widow of Joseph Magness] James H 14 MO. Martha 13 MO. Joseph M 11 MO. Wilkshire [sic] 9 AR. Hi Folks! I recently ran across an very interesting article in the Jackson Historical Society's quarterly that dealt with Capt. Thomas Benton Stallings, a steamboat captain on the White River during the post-war period. However, the article is replete with names of places and people concerned with the trade along the White River. I imagine that many of you will find mentions of your relations in it. I have posted it in PDF form on my web site. The URL is listed below. -- Robert W. King I'm an ingenieur, NOT a bloody locomotive driver! Hello Misty. I have the book "The Magness Migration 1733-1986" by Verna A Magness and have found it very interesting and this is my family. I have read all the Silas Turnbo manuscripts and have used them plus the book by Verna for some of my Magness family genealogy. I would like to know what the book "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900" has on any Magness family. Thanks for your kind offer. I was born in Arkansas but moved to Michigan at an early age and most of my family along with my ancestors are in Arkansas. So any help you can give will be appreciated. The other family I am interested in is the Bradley family from Independence county. This family descends form Lawrence Bradley a revolutionary solider. An Elizabeth Magness the daughter of Samuel Magness married George Washington Bradley the son of Lawrence Bradley; and they are my third great grand parents. Thanks again. Tim Holt
Thanks for checking. Judy
Mysty, Can you look in the Marion County families and see if you show anything for a William T. Nichols. His daughter Ida married a VanZant. Thank you Judy VanZant
Sorry, Judy, in "Genealogies of Marion County Families 1811-1900" I find no William T Nichols nor any VanZant marrying anyone with the given name of Ida. I've been having no problem accessing either Rootsweb or ARMARION-L. And my computer definitely doesn't paralyze. Nor have I received any complaints from anyone else. You might try defraging - maybe the computer is working overtime trying to access and just gives up. Hi Everyone, Could someone tell me what is going on with Rootsweb. I cannot access it and when I do, my computer paralyzes. Has this been going on and I just haven't been aware? Pat

Sorry, Michelle, I was talking about the family of Abram Wood in the email to Rhio. He brought his family to AR ca 1819 from KY. We don't have much in the way of resources for Virginia. The vast majority of our research is in Marion Co AR and neighboring counties so that's pretty much the primary extent of our resources. Hello Tim. No, there's no extra charge for shipping. It's all included in the $5. Another rather interesting historical resource that includes Magness information is the manuscripts of Silas Claiborne Turnbo. All 27 of his manuscripts are accessible from the Marion Co web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion - and they're searchable <grin> The Society has a copy of "The Magness Migration 1733-1986" by Verna A Magness (1986) [out of print, I believe]. If I can look up anything for you in this or in "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900" by Mysty McPherson and Vicki Roberts (1997) about any particular Magness, please don't hesitate to contact me. I'll do my best. As you say, maybe we can exchange information. Mysty, I saw your message about the resources and was wondering if you have anything listed for the Abram or Abrams listed in Virginia? I am looking for family of Rosie Eliza Abrams. Thanks, Michelle
I have followed the genealogy information given out by this group for about two years. I have never wrote a message, but now I must. I am related to the Magness family and would like to purchase this book. I live in Michigan and would send the five dollars to the address supplied, but is there a need to send more for shipping? I hope I have not offended this group, but I have enjoyed reading all the inquiries from the many different people, all seeking to gain information on their ancestors. If anybody want to contact me on the Magness family of Marion county, please do and we may exchange some informaiton. Sincerely, Tim Holt
Unfortunately, Rhio, Don did not index this little gem "Gleanings of Pioneer History." I've used it tons as a research source, but don't recall all the surnames in it. There's a bunch of stuff about the early Indians, and the early Tabor, Williams, Magness, Abram Wood, Stinnett, Obediah Wood, Hudson, etc families. Since your assorted families married into about every other family around here, there's a good chance one or more of them is at least mentioned. Won't swear to it though <g> Oh, yes, tax and shipping are included in the $5 so it's no huge investment. It's around 30-35 pages (I'm guessing - I've not seen the transcription yet). Mysty and/or Rhio, I don't want to sound like a "me too" but I had thought if I knew there was anything about my ancestors I would like to buy the book. But not if not!!
