It is the group that came through Yellville. Do not have a list of guards, don't think this group had guards, they were led by their own Indians. I do not find DeShields listed. The map of the route "Benge Route" is at: <http://rosecity.net/tears/trail/map.html> <http://rosecity.net/tears/> is a general Trail of Tears site. Dear Jerry Bennett, I saw your message regarding Joseph Bennett of Marion Co, Arkansas. My husband is descended from Lusetta P. Bennett who married John Walter Scott. She was born in DeKalb Co, TN (or at least lived there in her early years) in 1829, then moved to Liberty Twp, St. Francis, Missouri where she md John Walter Scott. Her daughter Lucinda Evelyn Scott was born in 1860 in the above twp in MO and md. James Hiram Crownover, and they lived in James Creek twp in Marion Co, where she died in 1903. Lucinda's parents I believe were William Bennett and Jane Bennett who were born in NC, then to DeKalb Co, TN. They had several children, none that I have seen named Joseph. But there were several other Bennetts living near, and also, their older sons could have had a son named Joseph. I you want more information, let me know. Patricia Gausnell

Do you have any Davenports or Bells on your list? Mary Hamlin
Is this the group who passed through Yellville in 1838-1839? Don, Can you tell me if the book lists the guards? Do you know where the trail they went on? Was it beginning in or around Beech Grove, Tennessee? I am looking for my DeShields clan and William DeShields appeared in 1839-1840. He and his brother (my Great Great Grandfather) were said to have worked on the Trail of Tears as guards but I have no proof of this. It was said that the economy of the US was very bad and the banks were closing and many men hired on to make enough money to make it through the next winter. We were told he came on the trail from Beech Grove, Tn to Bentonville, Arkansas (approximate locations). At that time, fresh guards were hired and he returned to Tennessee. It was about 1839 he brought his family to Marion County. His brothers Handy and John came with him. Also, do you find a listing for Nancy Womack? I was told she was Indian but no proof of it. I always thought that Handy may have met her on the trail but she is said to have been born in Arkansas. Reta DeShields Parton

I'm descended from a Joseph Bennett from Marion County. Father Joseph who, according to Flippin was one of the early settlers of Crooked Creek. I've always been told that my Bennett ancestry is part Cherokee, dating through Joseph's son Riley Franklin Bennett, my grandfather. The only thing that sounds probable to me is that Joseph's wife was part Chelokee. Her name was Sarah COWAN. If you should run across any Cowans on the Benge list, would appreciate the info. Thanks, Jerry Bennett
Remember, folks, the Trail of Tears - and the Benge Route - occurred in 1838. Remember, too, that those on this route traveled *through* Marion Co - the Route didn't end here. A few stragglers may have "dropped off" and stayed - but most went on to Indian Territory (not necessarily what we know of as Oklahoma today 'cuz boundaries were different then). Just don't want to see Don Ott inundated with requests <grin> Mysty shakerag@mtnhome.com

He vanished into mid air around 1920 and I'm looking any where and every where for him. My grand mothers bible has his parents as George Wilson and Marthie ?. My cousin who now has the bible has heard my uncle say that Marthie may have been a full blood cherokee indian. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Roberta Estes Hall
