I just received my book today in the mail. What a little gem! It's interesting reading filled with lots of tidbits about the area, too. It's the best bargain at $5.00. What a great addition to your genealogical library!! Thanks, Don, for all the work you put into this. Karen Merced, CA
Thanks, Mysty, I will have to order the book. Marion Co is where my great grandparents lived. Charlene
Nope, Reta. Big Blue 2 still resides, 3/4 finished, in my computer. Still has to be proofread, indexed, printed, and bound. And have no earthly idea of cost. Sorry about this. What is the address for ordering this book? Thanks, Charlene
Seeking burial sites and death dates for the following COKER family: John W. Coker born abt 1852 in Ark., Josephine (METHVIN) COKER born abt 1852. In 1880 census they are living in White River Township, Marion County. Known children were: James R. Coker born 1871 Nancy B. Coker born 1874 John W. Coker born 1876 Calvin Coker born 1879 I figure that John W. and Josephine married about 1870..does anyone know exact date? Charlene, "Gleanings of Pioneer History" by W R Jones can be ordered from the Historic Genealogical Society of Marion Co AR. The cost is $5 plus $1 for postage. It's a wonderful little book - full of neat stuff. I wouldn't be without it. Hi Frances:--It sure has been a long time, hasn't it? How've you been? Keeping busy, I trust <BG> Here's what I have for Big Blue 2 for James and Josie and their kids. JOHN WILLIAM COKER (son of William L. "Yellville Bill" & Elizabeth [Hudspeth] Coker) b MCAR June 1850 m MCAR ca 1869/70 JOSEPHINE "Josie" METHVIN (daughter of John Woodward & Corasanda "Corry" [Nowlin] Methvin) b MCAR Nov 1852. He farmed 640 acres on Hampton Creek, served 10 years as Justice of the Peace from Hampton Township, was a Notary Public, and was elected Sheriff of MCAR 1893. In Union Township 1870, Hampton Township 1880, Union Township 1900. Moved to McAlester OK. Children of John William & Josephine "Josie" (Methvin) Coker. 1 JAMES RANDOLPH "Ran" COKER b MCAR June 1871 d Bentonville AR 1946 bu Bentonville Cemetery m MCAR 8 Jan 1891 JEANETTE POCAHONTAS "Nettie" BURNES (daughter of Thomas & Matilda [Grinder] Burnes) b MCAR 23 Oct 1872 d 1922 bu Layton Cemetery. "Ran" was a farmer and miner. Later he ran the barbershop in Yellville. In Liberty Township 1900. 2 NANCY BELLE COKER b MCAR 1874 m MCAR 20 June 1895 J. C. LONGRAN b ca 1868 of Taney Co. MO. Lived in Marshall, Searcy Co. AR. 3 JOHN WILLIAM COKER Jr. b MCAR March 1877. 4 CALVIN ALONZO "Cal" COKER b MCAR Aug 1878 d 21 Oct 1906 of consumption bu Beckham Cemetery. 5 ELIZA COKER b MCAR June 1882 m J. E. REECE. Lived in Marshall, Searcy Co. AR. 6 EDWARD M. COKER b MCAR 9 Dec 1884 d Marshall, Searcy Co. AR 18 May 1910 bu Marshall Cemetery, Searcy Co. AR m ___. 7 ARTHUR COKER b MCAR April 1888. 8 ANSEL/ANCIL COKER b MCAR June 1889. 9 MARION COKER b MCAR Feb 1893. Unfortunately, because of that !@#$%^&* courthouse fire in 1887, I have no county record of their exact marriage date. Apparently Stan Coker and Jerry Young (among many researchers) haven't found it yet either. And, because they moved to McAlester OK, there are no death/burial records in MCAR. According to "Marion Co AR 1890" by Helen McMindes, they were still here for the 1900 census. In it "Josie" states she's been married 28 years, has had 9 children, all living in 1900. Also according to Helen, John's mother Elizabeth, aged 58, b AR, is living with them at the time of the 1880 census and died 1892. It's my guess they were still here when son Calvin Alonzo "Cal" died in 1906 since he's buried in MCAR. And, by the way, I just checked - they're not in White River Township for the 1880 census, but are in Hampton Township - way the other side of the county. Let me know if I can dig out further info for you. I'll leave McAlester OK to you <hehe> Oh, guess you heard Shelby's computer crashed. Poor guy. But, he's up and running and just as onery/cute as ever <grin> Mysty shakerag@mtnhome.com ************************************************** ----- Original Message ----- From: Frances Fortune <fm_fortune@hotmail.com> To: <ARMARION-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 10, 2001 10:23 PM Subject: COKER death lookup as well as marriage lookup > Seeking burial sites and death dates for the following COKER family: > John W. Don, you did a wonderful thing transcribing thes articles and putting them in Book form. I know Mr. Jones would have bee proud! Especially the fact you made it so affordable for everyone. I have read the book through and have highlighted the names I recognized so I can post this info into my computer. Thank you. If you have any Wood/Woods, Flippin, Magness, Hurst, Williams or other Marion County Names this is the best $5 you will ever spend! If you want to know the history as it happened in Marion County with the information about the indians and all, you will want to have this in your library. A MUST HAVE! --=====================_19030843==_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Well I just don't have enough data on the Benge Family at this point to make an educated guess. Certainly Dorcas Lightfoot was in the area at the time. Know that she would have been about 72 during the time of the Trail of Tears. I believe she may have died in Lumpkin Co., Georgia about 1836. There are no Duncans or Lightfoots listed on the roster. I am including a family group sheet, note that Thomas Benge III, is the right age and I do not have a wife for him. Maybe you can do some research on this and let me know what you find. I believe that I am more inclined at this time to believe that Dorcas Benge Lightfoot, may have been so named for her mothers side of the family. As you know the middle name of many Indians was taken from their mother's maiden name. We do not know an English name for her mother. Her father Capt. John Lightfoot was married to "Ga-Ho-Ga" from the Cherokee Deer Clan. The son is referred to as Edmond Benge Duncan, that would not be out of order if his grandmother was a Benge. The records mostly show that she married Charles Gordon Duncan in 1784 and Edmond was born same year. Note, depending on who you believe, the other kids come in line just like one family. Let me know what you find. Don At 09:06 AM 09-07-01 -0700, you wrote: >My wife's ancestor was Dorcas Lightfoot who was >married to an unknow Benge. Know the building well, Jeana. It obviously was a bank at one time 'cuz there is a big old bank vault in it - way in the back. I'm not real clear on the exact history. It's known as the Layton Building 'cuz when it was completed in 1906 by A S Layton, they moved their store/bank into it from the opposite side of the square. Something tells me I've heard that the entrance to the bank proper was around the corner on Old Main - but don't quote me on this. "Church On The Rock" is in the building next door to it. There's quite a blurb about it in "History of Marion Co" by Earl Berry. Bobby Joe Baker and the gal who owned Silver Creek Land Co (in the Layton Building) got it on the AR List of Historic Places several years ago. He's owner of Baker Company catty-corner across Old Main from the Layton Building. 870-449-4241. I'm not sure whether he's online or not. Probably, but you never know with Bob. He could probably tell you more about it than anyone else around. Hope this helps, Jeana. Shirley, I'm afraid I can't be of much help to you because you seem not to be looking for records in Marion Co AR. There would be no county records for Joseph & Manisha (Slape) Madewell in Marion Co anyway because the courthouse burned to the ground in 1887 and *all* records were destroyed. Bellefonte and Harrison are both in Boone Co AR. However, Boone Co didn't exist before 1869. Any county records (such as a marriages) would be found in the parent county which was Carroll Co. Before 1869 you should look in Carroll Co AR. After 1869 you should look in Boone Co AR. The web address for Carroll Co is http://www.rootsweb.com/~arcarroll The web address for Boone Co is http://www.rootsweb.com/~arboone Sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck in your search. Hi y'all! I was at my parents house this weekend and we were discussing all the buildings around the square. I remember a two story bank building covered with rock on the corner facing the courthouse. I think my dad said it was Flippin street but I don't remember. I'll try to explain it's location... Does anyone remember the old "Dime store"? Next to it was a drug store...Manhart's Drug? If you go up the hill along that street you pass the Mountain Echo office on your right and run into the Library and then you're at the top of the hill. Okay, now you know the other street that runs parrellel to this one up the hill? I'm talking about the block between those two streets facing the courthouse. If you were sitting on the courthouse steps, facing that block, this rock building would be on the left end of the block. My mom and dad say it used to be the "Fair/Fare store" back when they were kids. My mom said last time she was in there, it was a little antique store. She and the owner were talking about the vault that was in there. My mom had never known there was a vault in that building. My parents also say there was a post office in there or right next to it at one time. My dad says that the rock building was never a bank...never. I remember seeing a bank sign there when my cousins and I would eat our candy from the dime store sitting on the courthouse steps. I also remember them telling me that Burt Reynolds made a move and used that building for the bank robbery scene...so maybe that's where I got the bank idea from. In order for me to remember it, the "bank" sign would have had to been there after the 1963 or so. I don't ever remember it being a functioning bank...just seeing the sign. This is also the building that some church took over and it was called the Church on/of the Rock (s) or something like that. So...any help out there? As we were discussing this, I thought it would be a great idea to try to map out the town and it's changes every 5-10 years or so...maybe an idea for another book? :) Just a thought....Jeana
Judy, I would be interested in your Hawkins information, mine were living in Fulton County Arkansas in 1936 but you never know one of yours might be related to mine. Thanks so much! Bren nrfc98@aol.com
Linda and List: I have a couple HAWKINS in my database in Marion Co. which married into LEWALLEN family c. 1880. They seem to have moved on to the Tulsa, OK area, passing between 1950-70. Don't have any details or further information. I believe I acquired them as collateral lines related to the ALLEN family. Judy

I'm doing a major "spring house cleaning" of my e-mail folders and I can't find where I ever answered your e-mail. If I have answered it - just chalk it up to old age okay? Did you ever get an answer to your question? Would you like me to forward it to the Marion Co E-mail list for you? This is a message I sent to the Ozark co, Mo mailing list, and since it also applies to ARMARION people, I am sending it to see if anyone on this list has related information. I know you are all probably getting tired of me harping on this. Thanks for your patience. Thanks to the three of you who responded to my query about the Lantz family reunion. I have been looking through my conglomeration of Lantz/Lance material that I have collected. The Hardy M. Lance seems to me to be the son of Henry and Zelphy listed on the 1850 census of Cannon Co, TN with the following children: Charles B. 15, Minerva Jane 16, Thomas C 14, Wm. H. 12, and H. M. B. 10. I don't see them on my 1860 census families, but in 1870 there lived in Rapps Barrons, Marion Co, AR these heads of households: Hardy M, Charles, and Zelpha (female age 60). I'm not sure this is all of them. Also, there were many Lance families living in Cannon Co, TN in the time period of 1850, etc. I have wondered if Henry and Zelphy might have had an older son named Nicholas Washington that had left home by 1850 and who married my Jensee/Jane McCracken. As for the Moses Lantz/Lance family, on the IGI on www.familysearch.org their children are listed like this, although this is a combination of two entries for them: Children of Moses LANTZ and Jerusha GRAHAM were as follows: Vandle Jefferson LANTZ , , born 13 Jul 1827 in (of) Ozark Co, Missouri. George Washington LANTZ , , born 1829 Of Ozark Co, Missouri. Marinda LANTZ , , born 1 Apr 1831 in , , Arkansas. Paten LANTZ , , , born 1832 in (of) Ozark Co, Missouri. Susanna LANTZ , , , born 7 Oct 1835 in , , Arkansas. Lusanna LANTZ , , born 1836 Of Ozark Co, Missouri. Elizabeth LANTZ , , , , born 1837 Of Ozark Co., Missouri. Marion LANTZ , , born 7 Oct 1840 in (of) Ozark Co, Missouri. Lucinda LANTZ , , , , born 23 Dec 1842 in New Jersey. James K. P. LANTZ , , , , born 1844 Of Ozarks Co, Missouri. Jessie LANTZ , , born 28 Aug 1848 in New Jersey. Malinda LANTZ , , , , born 1849 Of Ozarks Co The 1870 census also lists with this family three other female children, Sintha age ?, Susanah Mae age ?, and Mary F. age 3. Well, anyway, I have been wondering about a couple things. One, this Vandle Jefferson Lantz, is he the same person as the Vandle Lantz of Marion Co, AR? I don't think he could be because he is on the 1850 census of Marion Co, age 42, and at the same time on the 1850 census of Ozark Co, MO listed with Moses Lantz,, and there he is 22. This makes me believe there must be a connection between these two families, since it is such an unusual name. Another thing, do you know about the later history of Moses' son Vandle Jefferson? I am wondering if he might be my ancestor. In 1856 he sold land to Henry A. Bratton in Ozark Co, and in 1858 he bought land from Benjamin Turley. On 10 Jul 1858 he md Sarah Hogan in Ozark Co. My ancestress Mary Susan Lantz/Lance was born in 1854 in Mo, so I was wondering if he might have married Jane McCracken about 1853, fathered Mary Susan, and then lost Jane shortly after. Then in 1858 md. again. Just thinking. Oh, I think I have seen him in probate records in the 1860s. Perhaps he was killed in the Civil War. Perhaps someone knows some things about these people that will shed some light. I am still casting my thoughts about for ideas. Once again, thanks for all your help. Oh, my husband and I are a tiny bit thinking about the reunion even if we can't establish a relationship. The Hootin and Hollerin Festival sounds like fun, too. But it is a long way to go from Oregon. Patricia Gausnell P.S. One other thing. On the Marion co, AR tax records for 1841-1866, there is a person listed named Lard, N.W. for the years 1853 and 1855. Does anyone know of him? I have wondered if it might have been a misinterpretation of Lance, N.W. This is the only place I have seen those initials evern remotely close to Nicholas Washington Lance, and these are the years he would have been married to my Jane McCracken.
