    3. Phyllis and All: Here we go again <groan>. The virus Phyllis refers to is a variation on the W32 virus we had so much trouble with back in the spring. It's a "newbie" that popped up 16 or 17 July. Virus software programs have the necessary protection in place. You just have to be sure it's in *your* system. 1. You cannot get it unless you open an attachment. DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS - period!!!!!! 2. You cannot get it thru Rootsweb. They have state-of-the-art virus protection software in place to keep list members virus free. 3. If someone who is on a rootsweb email list contracts the virus, the virus promptly attaches itself to every address in his/her address book and sends itself via email to all the addresses in that address book. These are the tried and true methods by which you can protect yourself as well as every one in your address book. 1. Immediately upon receipt, delete every email with an attachment. (I don't care if it's from your bestest friend or your mother or your boss. Delete it. You can explain later.) 2. Delete every email in your "delete" folder. (Yes, double delete every one of them. This removes them from those hidey-holes your system contains to allow your to retrieve "lost" items.) 3. Reboot your computer. 4. Run your virus scan program to determine whether or not you are infected. 5. If you find you are infected, follow the directions your virus program provides to purge your system. 6. Make a practice of downloading *at least once a week* the latest dat. files from your virus protection program. 7. In the future, check with whoever *appears* to have sent an attachment to you BEFORE you open it. Hope this is helpful to all of you. None of us wants to again go thru the 6-week horror of last spring so, please, please do the things suggested above immediately. These all have in some way, some connection to the many genealogy lists that I am on. They are not coming through the lists but will have something in the email that refers to the list and that would make it seem safe to open and also tempting to open because we all want even that little scrap of information. One had Nancy Trice's name on it, two attachments had a connection to Doug Leonard who has done much research and posted it on the web and the other had an email address and the name of one of my cousins who does not have this address anymore and hasn't had for some time. One was from a Barbara Whisenant and this one also had the Doug Leonard attachment. > > The point I am trying to make is that whoever is doing this is watching these genealogy lists and getting this information. 3. Just a few more facts on Captain John Benge's Route of the Trail of Tears through Marion County Arkansas. Started from Fort Payne Alabama, 28 Sep 1838, arrived Tahlequah, Oklahoma 11 Jan 1839, on the road 106 days. The U.S. Government paid $65.88 per capita for the removal costs. (They added the cost of three pounds of soap for every 100 rations at a cost of 15 cents per pound,) Total cost per person $66.24. The U. S. Government furnished 60 Wagons and teams to Capt. Benge and 480 riding horses. Captain Page, U.S. Army was in charge of doing the head count at Fort Payne, Alabama, he counted 1079. Captain Stephenson, U.S. Army was in charge of doing the head count when they arrived in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, he counted 1132. Captain Benge reported three births on the route and thirty three deaths, no desertions or accessions. Don Ott

    3. Last Friday the compressor on our HVAC unit went out frying 1/2 of our breaker box. Since then I've had really strange problems with my PC. Although I've fiddled with it all week I'm afraid that the only thing to do is to format the disk and do a complete re-install. I will begin that horrible process first thing tomorrow morning and should be back up and running by late Sunday afternoon. I wanted everyone to know in case anyone has a question for me or wants to report a problem and I don't answer right away I'm not ignoring you. Thanks. 3. Karen, I've skimmed quickly thru "Gleanings of Pioneer History" by W R Jones. Not sure where your problem is with what he says. Probably missed something by being in such a hurry. For source material for the Teaff family, the compilers of "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900" used MCAR census records for 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880; "Marion Co AR 1890" by Helen McMindes; "Pioneers and Pioneer Families of the Ozarks" by Earl Berry & Lyle Wood; "Cemeteries of Marion Co" by Lester & Marian Burnes; "Marion Co Marriage Records 1887-1905" by Marian Burnes & Vicki Roberts; Mountain Echo newspaper microfilm; and Vernon L Teaff, 1419 Shalimar Circle, Russellville AR 72801. Briefly, this is some of the data concerning the children of Nimrod Teaff contained in "MCAR Families 1811-1900." The MCAR pioneer Nimrod Moore Teaff b OH 1803 d Pyatt MCAR 1852 m MCAR 1831 Nancy B Magness b SC 1814 d Pyatt MCAR 1888. Both bu Patton Cemetery MCAR. Settled in Blythe Township bef 1840.
