    1. Re: Bit of news
    2. Linda: I too hate to see the Mt. Echo go even though I don't live in Marion County all of my ancestors on my Dad's side of the family lived there at one time or another. I guess I just hate to see things change. Also, I didn't recognize the music played on the midi for the 50's (and that is when I grew up). I did recognize the one for everyone else or at least I think it was the theme from the Adams' family. I am just curious. Thanks for the wonderful web page and who ever helped you design it. I think we all enjoy it. I know I do. Colleen

    3. I subscribe to the Mt. Echo (it's mailed to me) and I had a bit of a shock when I opened my paper yesterday. It's no longer the Mt. Echo. It's now "The Mountaineer Echo". I knew the Echo was up for sale but had not heard that it had been sold. The Echo was purchased by the Flippin Mountaineer. How very sad. The Echo has been in continuous publication since 1886 and it's hard to see it go. The Old Dillard Settlement by Doretha Dillard was in the paper but the column by Frankie Seay (Yakima Valley (Wash) News) wasn't. Just a tid bit of news for those of you who don't live in Marion Co. The Mountaineer has an on-line version of the paper at: http://www.flippinonline.com/news/newsmain.html Linda homepage: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas MarionCoAR: http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion/ SurnameLists: H.A.A.S/H.A.S.S. 3. Go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion, Gina, for the MCAR web site. And, while you're there, be sure to check out the S C Turnbo stories. There's a link to them. There are 27 volumes of manuscripts and they're all searchable. Turnbo's tales have been a wonderful asset for the early history and people of this totally burned out county. On Monday there were people were trying to separate each other by race, sex, color and creed; On Tuesday they were all holding hands. On Monday we thought that we were secure; On Tuesday we learned better. On Monday we were talking about heroes as being athletes; On Tuesday we relearned what hero meant. On Monday people went to work at the world trade centers as usual; On Tuesday they died. On Monday people were fighting the 10 commandments on government property; On Tuesday the same people all said 'God help us all' while thinking 'Thou shall not kill'. On Monday people argued with their kids about picking up their room; On Tuesday the same people could not get home fast enough to hug their kids. 3. This may be of help to you, Sally. Both of these cemeteries were among those relocated when Bull Shoals Dam was built across White River back around 1952, flooding much of the land behind the dam. The Corps of Engineers removed the remains to existing cemeteries on higher ground. Billings Cemetery. Two graves were in a pasture in Section 25 of Township 21 North Range 16 West. These graves were relocated to Midway Cemetery. A note on the removal map notes: "Transport remains by boat across White River directly opposite Billings Cemetery to reach reinterment cemetery by nearest route. Vehicle access to cemetery via Dugginsville MO." Kings I Cemetery. Relocated to Midway Cemetery. Originally located in the SE corner of the NW quarter of the NE quarter of Section 8 of Township 20 North Range 16 east one-half mile from the Jones School in the vicinity of the present day Jones Wildlife area. There are some plat maps under Maps on the Marion Co web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion that might be useful in finding at least the general location of these two cemeteries before their removal.
