    3. Linda, was not being critical, just wanted to go back and read what I had not read, to read what you added and could not figure out what was "new" and what to read... You are a wonderful person, dedicated to what you do for the rest of us...thanks. 2. rhioreh
    3. I have viewed the Marion Co. GenWeb site with Netscape 4.7 and IE 6. Both are aligned correctly. Sometimes browsers read html differently. If someone has IE 5 it might appear differently but I don't have that version to make a determination. In order to check, go to "Help" in your browser and click on "About". This should give you the version of your browser. Rhio

    2. Linda: You must be a very special Lady, doing all of this transcribing ect for us. Thanks for all of the trouble you go to. Is there anyway that we can be of help to you. I know we are all far away from you and really don't know what it would entail, but if we could be of help, I would be willing to do what I can. Thanks again. Colleen

    3. Thanks for the offer to help. If anyone has the Mt Echo on film that would like to help in the transcribing let me know. I'm forever indebted to Gladys Brown for all of her work in abstracting the information on local people from the Echo. As everyone knows this type of work is very time consuming. The other way people can help is to send me any information you find on Marion Co as you browse the web. I never have time to go surfing. And, if any of you have NOT submitted your own family genealogy to be put on the Marion Co site - send it to me. I won't get it up the next day but I'll get it on-line as soon as possible. The instructions on how to send me the information is found on the Family Genealogy page (link from the Main page will get you there) And, if anyone is willing to transcribe a Marion Co census that would be wonderful. The Marion Co census (scanned copies) are on CDs and can be purchased from Heritage Quest (http://www.heritagequest.com) for around 15.00 or so. Anyone who is willing to do this will have not only my undying gratitude but that of all of our visitors. Volunteers anyone????????? 3. To all of you who took the time to look over the Echo pages - a big thank you. I'll go on transcribing them. It will certainly not be a quick process by any means but I'll do a page as I can and get them up. For those of you who are regular visitors to the Marion Co site I owe you all an explanation for the sacristy of new stuff over the past several months. We are in the process of building a new addition onto our house and I'm also chairman of the USGenWeb Election committee. Between those two things and working full time I haven't had a minute to call my own. The addition is getting very close to completion so hopefully I'll have more time to work on things for the web site. Thanks for bearing with me thru all of this. 1. Bill Pierce
    2. Don Ott
    3. Some time ago I noted a request for information on Mr Bill Pierce and his early days in the U. S. Mail business. I had hoped that someone would respond to that request who had more information than I do. Now I have lost the original message so if anyone knows from where the original request came, please forward. Over the week-end I had opportunity to speak with some older folk who knew Mr. Pierce well. Seems to me as best as we can put the story together, I remember Mr. Pierce in later years, is that he was never Postmaster of Flippin. If in fact he was ever Postmaster, it might have been at Rea Valley. They had a Post Office there early, it was closed and reopened again in later years. Sorry I do not know the dates, however I believe there is a web site that lists all Postmasters of past. Mr Pierce carried the mail from Flippin to the Rea Valley area starting about 1925. He had a one horse hack, this was before the bridge was built across Crooked Creek on Hwy 101. He carried that route for about 10 years (about 1934/35) and lost the government contract to Ms. Eula Billings. As I recall she carried the mail about 5 years and Mr. Pierce under bid her and got the job back. He then carried that route for many years. Mr Pierce was a friend to the entire community, he would bring things from town for those who could not go and he frequently would stop at a home and sit on the porch, maybe have a cup of coffee, and talk a while with folk along the route. A son of Mr. Pierce still lives in Flippin as well as a daughter-in-law of an older son lives there. I expect a person could make contact with these folk and probably get close to the dates the query was seeking. Don Ott

    1. Re: Mail Carriers in Marion Co
    2. Mysty McPherson
    3. Susan, so far as I've been able to learn, there's no list per se of postmasters nor mail carriers. And I have no idea where the members of the Marion Co History Committee that gathered information for "History of Marion Co" by Earl Berry found their data. Not a single note or file resulting in that book has ever been found. It's my understanding that postmasters are approved/appointed by US Postal Service, but that local mail carriers are the purview of the current postmaster. When I was growing up the US Postal Service was known as the US Post Office Department and was totally supported by the federal government. It was a part of the federal government rather than the separate entity (non-governmental) it is today. The postmaster at the Flippin AR Post Office may be able to help you on this. Another source might be the US Postal Service itself. And another source might be NARA - the National Archives (there is a web site). I know there's a microfilm concerning applications for the creation of post offices, but it doesn't contain lists of PO personnel. It's possible that a letter to be printed in the Mountaineer Echo newspaper whose offices are in Flippin might nudge some local memories (there is a web site). Sorry I can't be more specific for you. If you ever do run across a source for this sort of historical information, the Historic Genealogical Society of Marion Co would be most grateful if you would share it with them. 3. The Boone Co cemeteries are on line at the Boone Co web page. It's just possible that you might find this unknown Williams who apparently died before 1880 in one of these cemeteries. I find no record of a Mary Smith marrying a Roberts who died before 1870 nor a Mary Smith Roberts marrying a Williams before 1872 in Marion Co records. Nor do I find any records in Marion Co of a Joseph Dodson marrying a Hannah B. Williams. Both these surnames are just as common in Boone Co AR though. Best of luck in your search.
