    3. Folks this is a HOAX - Please do not do this. The file talked about is the file that Window uses to handle long file names. If you did delete it please restore it from your backup disk to your Window's System Directory. If you want to be sure I'm right check it out at one of the Hoax sites. (this is from homepage of Links) HOAXES MAKING THE ROUNDS: Before you frantically forward a virus message to everyone you know or start deleting files and games check out the truth in these messages. Urban Legends has the latest updates on hoaxes and it also has neat stuff about the truth of Christmas legends and all types of other stuff. http://www.snopes.com/, A really great spot - easy to read easy to use: http://www.stanford.edu/group/partners/hoaxes.shtml McAfee keeps everyone up to date on real viruses and hoaxes. http://www.mcafee.com And so does Norton http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ and here's a new entry into the Hoax Information scene. http://www.europe.datafellows.com/news/hoax.htm And this one has good stuff to check out also: http://www.vmyths.com/ Here's the new kid on the block and it may end up being one of the best. 3. The 1860 MCAR census for Union Township shows: # 26 J S Carlisle 33 OH doctor. Harriet C 34 OH. Ann C Hough 13 AR. Mary J Hough 10 AR. #28 Nancy A Tutt 40 TN. D R 21 AR. Dulcenia 15 AR. Ester J 13 AR. Calvin 11 AR. The 1860 MCAR census for Jimmies Creek Township shows: #899 James M Mitchell 54 MO. Elizabeth 50 GA. James M 23 TN. Robert 22 TN. Elizabeth 17 TN. Catherine 15 TN. Jacob D 14 TN. #900 Elizabeth Johnson 47 TN. Mariam 20 TN. William M 15 TN. Elizabeth Johnson 74 TN. #901 Abraham Osborne 25 MO. Nancy 20 MO. James R 4 AR. Mary J 2 AR. Daniel 3/12 AR. Unfortunately, there are no marriage records for Marion Co before Aug 1887. That's the date when the courthouse burned to the ground taking *all* records with it. In "Boone Co Marriages Book A 1868-1876" I find an Elizabeth Johnson marrying a Samuel A Saffell on 10 July 1870. This may or may not be your Elizabeth Johnson. Because you say this family is in Boone Co AR in 1880, you might want to search their cemeteries. They are on line at http://www.rootsweb.com/~arboone and have been quite thoroughly done. "Cemeteries of MCAR" by Marian Burnes has no listings that would fit either of these families. Death records were not required in AR before Feb 1914 which makes this sort of research rather difficult. You might go to the MCAR web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion to see if there might be some reference in the section that refers to those cemeteries that were moved when Bull Shoals Dam was built about 1950. The Corps of Engineers kept very accurate records of every grave they moved before the newly formed Bull Shoals Lake flooded them. Unfortunately many of the markers had rotted away or were totally illegible, but they did the best they could. Sorry I can't be of more help to you. Good luck in your search. 3. Susan, if you'll go to the Marion Co web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion, you'll find the heading "Post Offices." If you'll look at that, you'll find that, in the Rea Valley area, there was a post office named Onset from 1884-1914. When application was made to open this post office, it was requested that it's name be Reas. This was not approved by the US Post Office Department. It was named Onset. From 1912-1953 there was a post office called Rea Valley. It was located in the NW1/4 of the NE1/4 of Section 11 in Township 18 North Range 15 West. The information for this little book of mine was taken primarily from "From Memdag to Norsk; A Historical Dictionary of Arkansas Post Offices 1832-1971" by Russell Baker of the Arkansas History Commission http://www.state.ar.us/ahc/ahc.html. While I was doing research for this book, Russell showed me the microfilm containing the original applications for post offices. Most included maps or sketches of the proposed location, while some had interesting bits of trivia attached to them. I got the distinct impression from Russell that there are no consolidated records of postmasters, but that data of this sort *might* be scattered among US Post Office Department records. He'd not taken the time to search thru all of them on the off chance he'd come up with enough to make it worth the time and expense. And, as I said before, the employment of mail carriers was and is strictly the purview of the individual postmasters. Whether the postmaster for Onset and Rea Valley kept such records or not, I have no idea. If they did, I've not heard of anyone having found them anywhere. Hope this helps with your documentation problem. Sorry I can't be of more help. 3. In "Marion County Marriage Records 1887-1896" by Marian Burnes & Vicki Roberts, I find Alexander Thompson aged 71 of Yellville m MCAR 14 Jan 1889 Dora Reed aged 16 of Yellville. They were married by J W Lyles. This marriage record can be found in Book E page 162 at the Marion County Courthouse. I've searched MCAR 1870, 1880 census records, "Marion Co 1890" by Helen McMindes, "Cemeteries of Marion Co" by Lester and Marian Burnes, "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900" by Mysty McPherson & Vicki Roberts. I've been unable to find either Alexander Thompson, Dora Reed, their parents, their birth dates, nor their birth places. They may have actually resided in a neighboring county or in Missouri, merely marrying in Yellville (although it's usual for both the bride and groom to give their current place of residence on the marriage application). Because of the divergence in their ages, this could have been an elopement with both of them residing temporarily in Yellville. The date of their marriage (1889) leads me to think that it's entirely possible both were somehow involved in the mining era (not necessarily as miners, but involved in some collateral business). Folks often sort of breezed in for a year or two and breezed out again, leaving little or no trace of ever having been here. Sorry I can't be of more help to you. 3. Kim, Thanks for the note, I don't seem to have data on your Alexander Thompson. The ones I locate do not seem to match the death date that you mention. I will put this on the Marion County List and hope that Mysty or someone will be able to come up with some help. Marion List please answer direct. 2. Don, Thanks for the overview of Bill Pierce. Most of it I knew - as my dad is the son who still lives at Flippin. I have asked him questions over the years about the mail runs of his father (never mentioned him being a postmaster). While reading the "History of Marion Co", there is no mention of a post office in Rea Valley. I'm just curious to know where the info came from for the book. My grandparents lived in Rea Valley during the 1920's - two of the older kids were born there. The twins (my dad and his brother, Ray) were born in Flippin. I guess I'll have to do a little more digging. Thanks again. Susan

    1. Re: Echo transcription
    2. Linda, I'm having some problems with accessing the Marion Co. site -- every time I get to the page and the music starts I get knocked off line. I know the problem is with my sound program and I guess I need to get another 'puter (this one is 4 years old). Could you send me the link of the other pages so I can see what you've done? I hope there isn't music on all the pages! Thanks so much for all you've done for the list. Susan

    1. Re: Another Favor Please
    2. Linda: I am going to order one of the CD's and try to transcribe it for you. Do you have a preference as to which one you would like on first. I logged on the webpage and I noticed that they were having a sale, so this must be a good time to buy. Colleen

    1. Which census?
    2. Mysty McPherson
    3. Hope you don't mind my putting in my two cents' worth, Colleen and Linda. Looks as if any census other than the 1880 would be useful on the web page. However, the AR 1830, MCAR 1840, MCAR 1850, MCAR 1860, MCAR 1870, MCAR 1880, and the reconstructed MCAR 1890 are all in print and available at very reasonable prices. The costs and where to get these publications are on the web page. Probably the census most needed by and useful to researchers is the MCAR 1900. That 20-year gap between 1880 and 1900 is when the mining era here in MCAR was taking off big time. The population literally exploded. For example, Rush was well on the way to its one-time population of over 5000. Added to that is the fact that most children born after 1880 will still be at home with their parents in 1900.
