Can someone furnish (briefly) some further info on this line? Eugene Johnson was born August 13, 1882, son of Asberry & Emeline Stone Johnson. I believe his wife was Alvie - sons Glenn, Raymond - sister Nella Matthews. I found mention of them in Daffron family papers in Wichita, KS this week and wonder how or if they relate. Judy
Not much, Don. And what I have is rather negative. None of them is in MCAR in 1870. May still be in MO where son Frederick W Dotson was born. None of them is in Helen's reconstructed 1890. If they were here in 1890, someone would have shown up as a taxpayer, but none does. None of them has married nor remarried in MCAR between 1887 and 1917 - not his mother, Elizabeth Shanan, he, nor his children Lillian E, Osias S, nor Frederick W. None of them shows up in Marian's Cemetery book either. It's possible that in 1880 they were living in that part of Blythe Township that became a part of Boone Co in 1881. It's a very slim strip - three sections wide, I believe. Sorry I couldn't find any more than this. Can anyone tell me where the old military road was? I understand this was the main road into the Yellville, Lead Hill area in the 1840s. Am I correct? I understand it came through Carrollton, is this correct? Also, how close is West Sugarloaf to Carrollton? I am the world's worst about maps and miles so I need someone's help. Reta, Sugar Loaf Creek in the northeast corner of today's Boone Co. AR. Carrolton is just across the Boone Co. AR border in today's Carroll Co AR about 4 miles southeast of Alpena, Boone Co. AR. The distance as the crow flies is around 29 or 30 miles. There is some disagreement as to exactly where the Old Military Road was. Basically it was the 1838 Benge Trail of Tears which crossed White River into Marion Co. at Talburt's Ferry, went along Fallen Ash Creek and on thru today's Summit, left Summit at today's intersection of RT 412/62 and the Missouri-Pacific and Iron Mountain Railroad in Marion Co, crossed into then Carroll Co. somewhere in the vicinity of Everton, and meandered from there to Carrollton. I've double-checked my memory with what Earl Berry says in "History of Marion Co" as well as the recent on-site documentation done by folks like Don Ott and Bill Wodiel of the Benge Trail research team. It's well known that it never went near the Lead Hill/West Sugar Loaf area. However, there was a road called the Old Salt Road that went from Springfield MO to Carrolton AR, but I'm not sure that anyone has seriously tried to map this old road. Hope this helps. First off, Don, Line 8, page 338 of MCAR Families says: Ruby Alice Pettit DIED 4 March 1991 m H D Hammond. Second off, look under "sources" for this family on page 339. There you'll find the name Charles Taylor. Now look in the front of the book under "Contributors." There you'll find the address for Charles Taylor. I'd suggest you contact him for further information on Ruby Alice Pettit. Sorry, but the research for this book has been archived and is not easily available to me or I'd go dig thru the files for you. I am told by eye witnesses that the first car owned by a Marion County person was owned by a woman. About 1917 Dr. Stoud's wife went to Springfield Missouri and bought a new Model T Ford. She was able to drive all the way to Yellville in one day. When she arrived in town that evening, many had never seen an automobile. She drove all over town, circling the square many times where a great crowd had gathered. She honked the horn so much that the Keeter family that lived out on Brown Church road heard the disturbance in down town Yellville and they came to town just to see what was happening. Dr. Stroud was the dentist in town and had a very nice home. His home was the one that is currently the first house west of the goat milk cheese plant. the second one east of the old post office building. Although the home has been in somewhat bad repair for some time, as I drove by today, 4 July 2002, I noticed that someone was cleaning the windows and it looked like they might be working on a restoration. Hopefully this old and beautiful two story home will be saved and restored. Several people are still living that were patients of Dr. Stroud and they all say he was a great dentist and would just charge sort of what the patient could pay, if at all. Don Ott
If you are looking in Boone or Marion County for an ancestor who disappeared during the war (It would be Marion as Boone was not created until after the war) be sure and check out Missouri. I had a great great uncle who we knew died during the war but we did not know much more. I found him and another cousin in Missouri. They were members of the Schnable's Missouri Guard Calvary. My great great grandfather was corporal in the same unit. So I found 3 members in that unit. My great great grandfather survived but his son William DeShields (William D Shields) did not survive. He died of smallpox in Alton Prison in Alton, Illinois. Anyway, check out these sights for more information on Missouri Confederate http://www.altonweb.com/civilwar contains the database of the soldiers that died at Alto during the Civil War and a short history of the prison also: http://www.missouridivision-scv.org/mounits/schnabelbatcav.htm This gives a list of his units. My family was in company G. Hope this helps someone. I searched for William for 25 years and he is there. Reta DeShields Parton [email protected]
Karen, That is not a dumb question. I am not sure where you found the information I had posted on the Dawes Roll so I don't know exactly what you know. Generally the Congress of US on 3 Mar 1893 passed a law to dissolve the Indian Nations communal land system and promote individual land ownership. To further this procedure they demanded a new roster "Dawes Roll" in 1898 that included the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Seminole Nations. There were 197 Delaware included in the Cherokee Nation. Indians were sorted by: Blood (Full 6601, Part 29,975) Marriage (286) Minors (sorry I don't know this number) Freedmen (4923) Delawares ( 197 adopted into the Cherokee Nation) The Enrollment period was 1899 - 1906. (Final date for enrollment 4 Mar 1907) ( But to be elgible had to be born by 4 Mar 1906) There were several restrictions, first you had to live in one of the Nations in Oklahoma, and second most had been on previous rolls and used that as evidence of their blood connection. There were 101,211 enrolled on the Dawes Roll that were eligible to receive title to land. Of these 41,785 were Cherokee, including the 197 Delaware. Remember there were many Indians that did not live in Oklahoma during this enrollment time period, so were not eligible, and also there were some Indians that did not want to be enrolled. I hope this answers most of your questions and gives you a starting point. There are several books available that lists all those enrolled, (Amazon.com) is a good place to buy one or maybe you can find some parts on the internet or in your local library. Does anyone have anything on the Seawright family of Flippin? Don
Wondering if anyone can help me. I believe Handy DeShields died shortly before March 16, 1899. Does anyone have access to the local newspapers for that time period? I believe he would have died prior to that time due to the sell of his land. I would expect an obituary to be close to that time or at least between February 1-March, 1899. Also, if you have access to the newspapers, could you check to see if there were any legal notices before March 20, 1899? This is the closest I have been to finding out the date of his death. I would appreciate anyone's help. Handy lived in Marion/Boone County from 1840 until his death in 1899. He was married to Nancy Womack. Reta DeShields Parton [email protected]

I am looking for anyone that is familiar with the Covington family of Boone and marion County's . I have been researching this family and have recently aquired a bunch of very old photo's I need help identifing. My lines are with James J. and Mary Haley Covingtons children. The photo's I have are of James W known as "Dutch", a son of James J and Mary. I have a few names on photo's and with a list of names from the 1900 Census I have been trying to piece these together like a puzzle. I have pictures of a Minnie, Ula...Ula I think is James grandaugter. Then I have a Mable and Fred....and a Frinny but I think that is a nickname, she is pictured with Ula or it is also spelled Eula. Most of the pictures were taken in Harrison. These photos were the property of Capers and Lavada Layton Covington. Capers was a son to "Dutch". I need much more family information to put all this stuff together and would love to hear from anyone that can help. I'm also very willing to make copies to share if anyone is interested. Capers had many siblings, some were born after he probably moved out of the house as a young adult. But I don't have a complete list and I need that. For instance I know there was a sister named Mary but she's not on the census I have. Oh, I also have a picture that I am almost possitive to be John Powell "J.P." with his wife Cuba and 5 of their children. I don't have a complete list of their kids and that is giving me a bit of trouble. The 2 oldest in the photograph are boys and then there are 2 younger girls and a baby about 1 that is a boy. In the Census JP had a child named Ethel and IF this photo is of JP's family then Ethel is a boy???? and what was the oldest sons name. This is all just an assumption until I can get some help!?!?! Thank you. Sheryl Unrath *Family researcher for Estes, Layton, Covington and Reed's*

Nanci: I am attaching a census record for Handy from 1840-1880. I have found him in all years. I know he was in Tennessee before 1840 as his brother was born in Coffee County (actually created in 1839) in 1826 per his military records. John Wesley was Handy's son. I have JW everywhere but the 1870 census and he was married to Frankey in 1869. My dad says John Wesley often talked about the fact that he built their bed in the corner of the cabin when they first got married. It is possible they were living in the DeShields Cave during the census taking and were missed. But thought I would see if anyone else had seen them in surrounding townships. You asked about the children. Here is Handy's children and who they married. 1)William DeShields b 1847-48 died 1865 at Alton Prison, Ill. POW unmarried 2)Sarah DeShields b 1848-1849 died before 1860 3)John Wesley DeShields born Sept 18, 1849 died Nov 28, 1939 married Frankey Green on November 28, 1869 4)Marion Ceeborn DeShields born May 6, 1852 married Sarah E Stiles 5)George Calvin DeShields born February 1855 died March 3, 1926 married Minerva Ann Hughey, February 10, 1878 6)William Brice DeShields born May 14, 1856 died February 13, 1940 married 1)Lucinda Lou Dodson 2) Lizzie Shepherd 7)David Clayborn DeShields born Oct 10, 1859 died March 13, 1907 married 1) Nancy Richey 2) Mary Ellen Richardson 8)Mary Frances Elizabeth DeShields born 1861 died 1945 married John Richey Feb 7, 1878 9)Jacob DeShields born January 16, 1866 died December 5, 1952 married 1) Lou Ida Wood Allen, 2) Sarah M Dodson, 3) Martha 10) Alice A DeShields born April 1870 married Elonzo Richey Children of John Wesley DeShields: 1)Dennie DeShields born March 25, 1886 died May 7, 1969 married Ruby Lee Austin on September 21, 1910 2) James E DeShields born March 21, 1871 died Nov 3, 1872 3)John H DeShields born March 11, 1873 died Oct 24, 1875 4)Lillian DeShields born July 11, 1875 died Aug 8, 1879 5)Leota DeShields born May 19, 1879 died June 19, 1880 6)Louella (Lucy) DeShields born March 26, 1881 died April 27, 1966 married James William Wilmoth on Oct 10, 1897 7)Edna Eddie DeShields born March 28, 1883 died March 2, 1909 married Burt Lee Wilmoth on May 15, 1898 8) Minnie May DeShields born July 31, 1888 died April 2, 1966 married Marion Columbus (Frank) Wilmoth on November 3, 1942 (she was 54 when she married the first time). 9) Unnamed DeShields born 1898 died 1898 Handy and John Wesley both lived their lives in Sugar Loaf Township, Marion/Boone County, Arkansas. Handy was born in Tennessee and his parents were born in Va. Handy has 2 brothers we have verified William and John. We believe he has at least another brother (Daniel) and sister (Elizabeth). This has not been proven. Most of Handy's sons went to Oklahoma. Handy's brother William went to Oregon in 1853-54. He arrived in Oregon City, Or in 1855. Would be interested in your connection with this family. Thanks for the help. I have lots of information I would be glad to share.
