Don, My mom said she was glad to hear from you and said to tell you Hi! I told her I had never heard of her speak of a Madelyn and she said, "Snooks" and then I knew immediately who Madelyn Rose was....Mom has regaled us with many stories of the "Three Muskateers" over the years. I believe she had a wonderful childhood with her two friends in Flippen. I know she even wrote a short story, for us, in rememberance of those days with Snooks and Juanita. She is living in WA state near my sister whose husband is in the Air Force.
Don, since the Jack Gilley that married Evelyn Kellam wasn't born until 23 Aug 1927, I don't see how he should have been listed on the MCAR 1920 census. Doubt seriously this was a misprint in Jack's obit either. I remember Glen, Randy, and especially Brenda having fits when they discovered my husband (Oct 1923) is older than Jack but was working just as hard in the hayfields. Evelyn is still living in Eros. And all their kids - Glen, David, Mary Lou, Randy, and Brenda - are still in the area too. Matter of fact, Mary Lou married Mike Tetrick, Wayne and Cora (Hurst) Tetrick's son. Maybe Cora could help you out with this. Don't think Burl and Jack are one-in-the-same. The children of Claude and Flora A (Reed) Gilley were listed in Jack's obit in this order: Burl, Clifton, Doane, Phil, and Jack. Moyra, Hi My name is Lisa Harris Hebert. My mom is Frankie KEETER Harris. Her mom was Nancy Drucilla REED and her dad was Gattie B. Keeter. Nancy's parents were John Wesley REED and Martha Ann Coventon (Covington). Martha Ann's parents were Moses Petty COVINGTON (b. 18 May 1833 and d.24 March 1928 in Gassville, AR) and Mary J. DILBECK (b. 9 Oct. 1838 d. 1905) They were married in 1855 Moses' parents were James Franklin COVINGTON and Elizabeth Mary's parents ere Noah DILBECK and Sarah MORGAN Moses and Mary Jane are buried in Gassville Cemetery, Baxter County, AR Moses was in the Civil War and according to his war records he was almost mortally wounded at Gettysburg. It sounds like my mom and you are cousins. If you would like I can give you my mom's address.
The best thing I can suggest to you, Moyra, is to purchase a copy of "Genealogies of Marion County Families 1811-1900" published by the Historic Genealogical Society of Marion County in 1997. In it you'll find genealogical information on the Gilley family back to 1788/90 in VA, the Reed family back to 1829 in VA, and the Coventon family back to 1803 in SC. There are no pictures or family legends in this book. It's indexed, covers 400 families, hard bound, 8.5x11, lists sources where data was found under each family, cross-references to spouse families, covers births, deaths, marriages, burials, children, military service, where they settled in MCAR, and more. It can be ordered from the Society at PO Box 761, Yellville AR 72687. The cost is $60 plus $5 shipping. If I can be of further help, just let me know. Hi Folks: It's been awhile since you've heard from me and I do apologize for that. My personal life became quite busy and I could not devote any time to the Marion Co site. I'm now slowly getting back to normal and will once again be working on the web site. One of the things I'm in the process of doing is adding on the bottom of each page a "Date Last Modified" and my e-mail address. Today I went thru all of the Family Genealogies, added the above code and corrected the font sizes. I noticed that some of the submittals have been out there since I took over the site in early 1989. If you have ever submitted a family genealogy to the Marion Co site will you please go take a look at your family pages and see if your e-mail is correct and if your genealogy information needs to be updated. http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion/ Thanks a million Linda homepage: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas MarionCoAR: http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion/ TulsaCoOK: http://www.rootsweb.com/~oktulsa2 MuskogeeCoOk: http://www.rootsweb.com/~okmuskog SurnameLists: H.A.A.S/H.A.S.S. When I was in Tennessee 2 weeks ago, I noticed the many names which I know to be in Boone and Marion County in the early 1900s and before in Tennessee. Tonya and I visited the Rutherford, Bedford and Coffee County libraries and court houses. Bedford is about to publish their book. Here is the link: BEDFORD COUNTY FAMILY HISTORY BOOK It is $60.00 and it has a link listing the families listed in it. I thought this might help someone. Reta

Would like to find some of the descendants of the Crow family and other families who's ancestors attended Baptist Churches in the North Arkansas area. This included Newton and Carroll Counties and some churches as far away as War Eagle in Washington County. I would like to transcribe these for the county websites. Please contact me if your family has even one. I now have 1 1/2 issues. Looking for more. You just received the notice of finding Handy and Nancy's obit. but I can't be so selfish as not to include the other obituary which was in that years minutes. They printed 2 families that year. Both a husband and wife for each family. Here is the other one. JAMES CROW was born in Roane Co., Tenn., Oct 19, 1825, professed a hope in Christ in 1865, joining the Primitive Baptist church at Sweeten's Cove soon after his conversion. He remained a member with that body till his removal to Arkansas., coming to Ark, in the ''70s. He put his letter into the Crooked Creed Church of the same faith, where he held his membership till his death, July 1, 1896. Always attending church promptly, he became on of its most valuable members, being clerk for a number of years and delegate to almost every association. He was married to Nancy Beane, Oct. 29, 1846, ever living a faithful husband and devoted father. He leaves several children and a host of friends to mourn his departure. NANCY CROW, wife of the beloved brother, Jas. Crow, was born in Marion Co., Tenn, June 20, 1828. Joining the church with her husband in 1865, she lived a true Christian life, always discharging her duty with alacrity and delight. thereby proving what she claimed. She departed this life in Jan. 1894, leaving a companion, several children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her absence. (Hope these obits and Handy and Nancy's can be added to the County websites) Reta DeShields Parton 1808 W Huntsville Springdale, Ar 72762 1-479-751-6947 [email protected] daughter of D W DeShields & Cora Irene Hamilton DeShields granddaughter of Dennie DeShields and Ruby Lee Austin DeShields gggranddaughter of John Wesley DeShields and Frankey Green DeShields ggggrandaughter of Handy DeShields and Nancy Womack DeShields
Buffalo Baptist Assoc 1897 - Handy & Nancy DeShields Obituary This I have been hunting for 25 years! Minutes of the Annual Session of The Buffalo Baptist Association of Primitive Baptists, Held with Macedonia Church, Boone County, Ark. September 18th, 19th, and 20th, 1897. HANDY DESHIELDS was born in Coffee Co., Middle Tenn, Feb. 28, 1819. Came to Ark, in 1835. Professed a hope in Christ in 1837, and united with the Primitive Baptist Church. He always lived a devoted Christian, and was prompt to fill his seat on all occasions. He was married to Nancy Wamic, March 14, 1843. Departed this life Feb. 9th, 1897. and in his death we feel that our loss is his eternal gain. NANCY DESHIELDS was born in Marion Co., Tenn, in 1827. Embraced Christianity and joined the Baptist Church with her husband, always living a devoted Christian. Slept January 25, 1897. She leaves eight children, a host of relatives and friends to mourn her absence. NOTE: I believe the birth place of Nancy was Marion Co., Arkansas. These minutes were written in Boone County, Arkansas (next door to Marion Co). Since Handy was born in Tenn. I believe this was just picked up this way. All census' since 1850 has stated she was born in Arkansas. SPECIAL ATTENTION: NANCY died January 25, 1897 and Handy died 15 days later on February 9th, 1897. Paul, there's no information that I'm aware of here in Marion Co AR about where John A Patrick is buried. Table Rock Lake is part of the White River chain of lakes and is slightly west of in Hollister. However, Hollister is in Taney Co in MO - and Bull Shoals Lake, in Marion Co AR, peters out and back into White River a good ways from Hollister. Table Rock Lake is in Stone Co MO. If you'll look at a good map of southern Missouri/northern Arkansas, I think you'll see what I mean. I'd suggest you go to the Taney Co MO web page and the Stone Co web page to find out more about the creation of Table Rock Lake, whether there was a removal from flooded cemeteries, and find out more about the Cedar Creek Baptist Church cemetery. Sorry I can't be of more help, but we just don't have much in the way of research materials for Missouri.
